“Small rooms but GREAT location!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2009

For anyone looking for a large room with room views, this is NOT the hotel for you. The width was just a little larger than my double bed, and the windows opened up onto the wall next to it. However, the bathroom was spacious, and the room was modern and very clean. AC worked wonderfully, large, flat screen TV, and the bathrooms looked as though they had just been re-done. It was also a GREAT location right in Stonetown, and the views from the restaurant were spectacular. The food was also great, and the hotel staff very helpful, warm, friendly, and accommodating. If I ever stayed in Stonetown again, I'd stay there.

We stayed in Stone Town for one night on our honeymoon and absolutely loved the Al Johari. Rooms are great and the bathrooms (complete with 'massage showers') are really modern and clean.
We had a few sundowners in the bar which has great views over the rooftops and then an amazing dinner in the restaurant. Would definitely recommend it.

I loved the Al Johari. Regretably, I had to stay in Dar instead of returning to Stone Town for the jazz festival so I couldn't stay there again. The rooms are small and the place is a little cramped because it's a building packed into the "casbah" area of Stone Town, in the windy alleys. There is a muslim school across the alley where you will hear kids singing in the mornings. You will also hear the call to prayer so if that is not your thing, maybe somewhere not right in the casbah area is better. This was the ultimate Stone Town experience though.

The rooftop restaurant/lounge is the hidden gem. Fantastic views of Stone Town roof tops and the ocean at sunset. Food is OK but you shouldn't be eating at your hotel anyway in Zanzibar. This place has character and remarkably modern bathrooms and showers for Stone Town. No mosquitos in the rooms.

Say hi to Cristophe on the rooftop bar if you stay here.

We loved Al Johari! We stayed there for three nights over New Years. The hotel is incredibly clean and the staff works hard to keep it mosquito free. Everyone is friendly and the breakfast (included) was quite good (omlettes and fresh fruit plus much more).

The hotel had a great location in the heart of Stone Town near the water. What a great place to stay in Zanzibar...

we stayed at Al johari for 2 nights between Christmas and New Year. This hotel should be avoided at all costs. If you do have to stay, just make sure they don't have you Credit card details. When we arrived they claimed that our travel agent had not reconfirmed the booking and that they no longer had a junior suite available. The only room available was a delux suite and it would be an extra $150 per night. They demanded our credit card to cover this in case they could get it back from the travel agent. we refused and provided confirmation we had from the agent and we had to threaten sleeping in the hotel lobby before they gave us a room.
This delux suite was a joke. An average sized room, nice big bed but very little room to move around. The bathroom had an enclosed shower/bath unit that didn't work properly and which leaked everytime we had a shower... then we returned from dinner on the second night to find the bathroom completely flooded, which meant having maintainence guys in our room for a hour late at night.
When checking out the drinks / dinner bill had additional items on it and again they tried to get us to pay for this by credit card luckily we had enough cash to pay for everything, as I am sure the extra cost for the room would have somehow appeared on our statement.
We booked with Pure Zanzibar who have since told us that other travellers have had real problems at this hotel.

I didn't stay at the hotel, but my friend and I wandered by and decided to go to the restaurant for lunch. The restaurant, with a full menu, was empty. We decided to sit in the lounge area because of the view of rooftops and the ocean. It only had a bar/snacks menu, but it was so hot we didn't want much food. The food (we got vegetable & meat mezze) wasn't that great, but the service was very friendly and the ambience & view more than made up for it.

The Junior suite cost us $200 per night and was tiny - a huge bed in a small room that smelled of damp. We also found out that the spa advertised on the website isn't actually open yet - one of the main reasons we chose the hotel.

We complained, and got upgraded to the Deluxe suite which was a much better size but still stank of damp, and the shower and sink were leaking so much the entire floor was covered in water.

In summary, the staff were wonderfully helpful, the location is lovely and the rooftop bar magical at night, but the hotel has a feel of being thrown together - nothing is finished off properly, eg. the doors don't close without a good shove. Certainly not worth the $200 per night - you'd get a much better hotel in a European capital for that, and this is only Zanzibar :-(

  • Liked — the rooftop bar and restaurant
  • Disliked — the small rooms, the damp and the price
