“Classy and good value”
Reviewed 1 March 2014

We stayed at this hotel for two nights at the start and end of our Zanzibar trip. The location, 5 minutes walk from the ferry port and 10-15 minutes from the centre of a Stone Town, is great. It's hard to find, so either print out the directions on the website or ask the staff to meet you at the port. We had a standard room for $55 which was good value for a Stone Town. The bed was comfy, the bathroom was nice and the room had AC. Free breakfast on the cute roof terrace was good. Wifi only worked in the reception area and was pretty slow but we didn't need to use it much. Really happy with our stay and would stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 01 on the ground floor is noisy. Room 11 was a better standard-class room.

I feel as if I stayed at a different hotel than the one reviewed so highly on Trip Advisor! The woman who worked the desk was tired and talked in a monotone that was unintelligible in English for me or in Swahili for my friend and was no help in making us feel comfortable. The stifling heat and humidity filled the lobby and rooms and our air conditioning unit barely worked; the old ceiling fan was like an airplane landing in the room and couldn't be used. The sheets were thin and itchy, the "shower" a trickle not enough to wash my hair, the toilet noisily flushed for five minutes and not completely. Wifi was supposed to work in the lobby and rooftop but it never connected. The rooftop breakfast area was crowded, hot, lots of flies and lukewarm coffee. I had reserved three nights but after all this and then a huge storm, power outage, backup generator not working or just trying with loud bangs all night long and horrible heat --- we changed hotels. It was a disappointing welcome to Zanzibar to say the least.

Dear Lynn M, I am sorry for your experience at the Warere.

You were in Zanzibar during the hottest period of the year, the heat and humidity are stifling during December and January. The demands on the power network in Zanzibar are often too high for the network to cope with, leading to low voltage, which can be a problem for AC, fans, and water pumps that work at lower output.

Power often goes out during storms and our generator broke down. I do apologise for this. The AC unit in the room you stayed in worked well, I personally checked it after you left. We also checked the shower and have replaced the shower head.

We have just changed the internet provider after having repeated problems with their service and we now have a fast, reliable wifi on all three floors!

Our high quality cotton sheets are replaced on a yearly basis, so I am surprised you found them thin and itchy.

I am sorry you found our receptionist to be unintelligible, we have never had complaints about her english before, as she is very fluent.

I hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay on Zanzibar!

Rooms very nice, clean, and well dressed. The bed is huge with a good large mosquito net. There is no door to the bathroom/toilet. You need to press a button in order to get heat the hot water (wait ~10 min). The breakfast tips: get early to breakfast otherwise there might not be enough food left for you ;) Internet works ok unless lots of people are connected at the same time.

Dear Kupsztal,

Thank you for reviewing us! I have had a word with the breakfast staff to make sure they have enough food on hand even for the late risers, sorry for the inconvenience. We are glad you enjoyed your stay at the Warere and hope to see you again soon.

From the time we arrived, to the time we left we were well taken care of. We were met at the ferry by staff to carry our bags & show us the way, this was followed by a welcome juice and refreshing damp cloth, most appreciated because it was very hot & humid.
Our room was just off the reception area down a couple of stairs, nicely furnished in old traditional furniture with an air-conditioner. It was very comfortable, with crisp white linen . The only disappointing thing was a little skylight window had no curtain and the light from the reception streamed through there all night.
The terrace at the top of the building where they served breakfast, had a lovely view over the harbour and Stone Town.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 01. If you need a dark room at night don't stay here, rather go for an upstair...

Hi Gail K, thank you for reviewing the Warere! We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us.

The room you stayed in is a newly refurbished room and I have not yet slept there myself, so I had not noticed the issue of the light streaming in from the small window. We are having a curtain made as I type! Thank you for the comment.

We look forward to having you again!

Just enjoyed a three night stay and we were pleasantly surprised! It is ideally located just a few minutes walk from the centre of town and is just a few metres from the ferry port. Our room was beautiful, spacious and clean with a lovely balcony. Breakfast was nice but a little limited only offering fruit, bread and eggs but this seems to be the norm throughout Tanzania. Didn't have dinner unfortunately but staff were very pleasant and helpful! We honestly didn't expect to find somewhere so nice (within our budget) in the middle of the chaos of stone town but this hotel was brilliant! Would definitely recommend!

Nice and quiet place just behind the hectic harbour area. A little bit far from stone town but perfect location for the ferries. Can be a bit difficult to find though. Nice rooftop terrace for breakfast and drinks. Nice and clean rooms with A/C and mosquito nets.
