“Lovely place and helpful staff”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

For the price this is an excellent place to stay. Beautiful and clean, very nice breakfast, friendly staff that efficiently helped with day trips and transport. The shower is wet room style which isn't fantastic but not unusual for the place, and the water was hot. Be aware it's not at the centre of old town, and if you're a woman travelling alone you will have to deal with a lot of attention on your walk there. Again, comes with the territory. Close to the ferry and to the real street life of Zanzibar.

The Hotel is very near the Port so easy to reach if arriving or leaving....and very easy to find (which a lot of places in Stone Town are not). It is right next to Stone Town so really easy to walk there and ramble through the alleyways and enjoy before heading back to the haven of Zenji....
Great cafe at the front of the Hotel also.
The staff and owners are lovely - very friendly and helpful.
The rooms are truly beautiful - slightly different but all gorgeous and very 'Zanzibar' style so memorable and unique - great value for money.
Breakfast is on the rooftop ......
All fabulous - would definitely recommend to anyone and definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back are away from the Main Road so probably a bit quieter....

The only complaint I have is the noisy mornings because of the traffic outside. This is located in the heart of the town so you can expect some business. Lots of places to go that is walking distance (I recommend Mercury's bar! Great pizza :) ) the restaurant at the hotel is also really good. I only had a chicken burger, chips and Samosas but very good!

My husband and I stayed at Zenji for four weeks in February while I studied Swahili at SUZA. The owners and staff were incredibly kind, helpful, and generous with their time. Truly, everyone from the housekeepers, to the front desk staff, to the servers welcomed us and took the time to develop relationships with us during our relatively long stay.

In addition to the friendly staff, Zenji Hotel is an excellent choice for its location: it is in Malindi area, just a 10-minute walk to the more touristy parts of Stone Town. This is perfect because you can still visit the tourist areas, while staying in an area that is much more authentic. Walk to the nearby market at Darajani, have a meal at the next-door Passing Show restaurant (if you're lucky there won't be a tourist in sight!), or explore the area near the port.

Finally, the rooms are pleasant and the amenities generous. We stayed in Zenji Flavour and the room was large, comfortable, and deliciously cool with the AC running (turn it off when you leave in the morning, but leave the doors/windows closed and you'll return to a relatively cool room in the afternoon). The breakfast is hearty and includes delicious spiced tea and coffee drinks. Also, several reviewers have mentioned the noise: all of Stone Town is noisy, but if you sleep with earplugs and an eye mask, you'll be fine. If you're not used to the calls to prayer, give it a night or two and you'll start to sleep right through them.

I will be returning to Zanzibar every few years for work and I look forward to staying at Zenji Hotel next time. Asanteni watu wa Zenji Hotel! Tunashukuru sana na hatuwezi kusubiri kutembelea ZNZ - na Zenji! - tena.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel are a bit quieter.

We were mostly staying in hostels and camping, but we upped our budget a bit for Zanzibar, and found awesome value at Zenji. We stayed in both the Spice Room (private bathroom) and the Treasure Room (shared bathroom) and both were great (though a little lacking in the shower water pressure in Spice). The hotel staff was friendly and very helpful, and restaurant had great food, there was a nice rooftop terrace for a full complimentary breakfast, all rooms (including shared bathroom) were kept clean, the beds were comfortable and clean, and the mosquito nets were clean and without holes (though we did not need to use them). There were also fans and an air conditioner in each room. Overall, the price for this place isn't bad, and what you get for it exceeded our expectations. I would definitely recommend Zenji!

I'm picky when it comes to hotels, but considering I stayed in here after 2 weeks in Tanzania, i will say it was a decent hotel.

Zenji it's a good place to spend a night or two in Stone Town, but definitely not the hotel you should book for a longer stay. The rooms are small, but ok.

We picked Spirits of Nature because it had a private bathroom, AC and the balcony was on the side of the hotel

Pros.: Good breakfast on the roof, friendly staff, located close to the ferry.
Cons.: Noisy area - Zenji is situated on a busy street.

Room Tip: Choose a room that has balcony or windows on the side or the back of the hotel - avoid the front (We...

Highly recommend Zenji! The staff are friendly and truly helpful. The rooms are clean, cute and comfortable. The breakfast on the rooftop was excellent and a great way to start out each day. We were at the hotel with a group of students and felt that the hotel and staff were encouraging and instrumental in making our time in Stonetown all that it could be. When we go back to Zanzibar we will definitely be booking our hotel and any tours through Zenji.

Room Tip: Be sure to specify if you would like to have a bathroom in your room and inquire about the side of t...
