the room is spacious and clean. We had one with the private bathroom which was not very private as it is separated from the room with just a wooden screen and a curtain. Otherwise the staff is very friendly and the breakfast on the roof restaurant is very good. Beware that there is the Muezzin shouting loud in the morning in the area and then at 7h30 the gorvernement alarm. Lala salama !!

Zenji Hotel is a convenient and secure venue for a visit to Zanzibar's intriguing Stone Town. The suites provide good space and value for the small difference over the individual rooms. The owner and staff are friendly and helpful. The home-made jams served with breakfast are outstanding. The location is within a 15-minute walk of the beautiful revitalized waterfront, a wide selection of excellent restaurants, and the local shops that give Stone Town so much of its color and appeal. Functional...but highly recommended.

We have just stayed at the Zenji for 2 nights before heading back home. It served as a great little hotel for exploring Stone Town. It is definitely not top-end, but then you shouldn't expect that for the price. What you get is a friendly hotel, simple and comfortable rooms, and a tasty breakfast. It is located at one end of Stone Town near the ferry port. Freddie Mercury's bar is this end of town, but most other sights are the other end. This is defintely not an issue as Stone Town is not a big place at all and in any case a taxi was dirt cheap (a standard 3000 TSH) to anywhere in the town.

A city tour is well recommended. In terms of restaurants we ate at Livingstone and Beyt Al Chai, both of which we recommend. We also had cocktails at Mercury's for sun set and that was a great way to finish the holiday, watching all the kids play football.

If you're after a hotel for a 2-3 day stay, then this is a great option. Any longer and you might want to try something more up market and perhaps with a pool.

My friend and I took our two Tanzanian guides who got us to the top of Kili here as a thank you and we all had a wonderful stay. Our rooms were big and clean with flowers on the beds to welcome us and you could get lost in the large double beds!
My friend and I both had ensuite rooms but our two guides had a shared bathroom in the corridoor but this was no problem as it was just outside their doors, ( I think they may have used to much hot water as hot showers were a real treat for them)
Anneloes arranged a trip to Chumbe Island for us which we felt very privaliged to visit, as day visiters are only allowed if one of the few bungalows on the Island are free, but if you get the chance go because the snorkeling is amazing,We also went on other trips that the hotel arranged for us, all very good and with their own taxi driver, very easy.
The port being just around the corner is a great plus, also the short walk into town is fine. Breakfast is really good with lovely bread and jams to die for, We also had some very good lunches there and the terrace is lovely and cool place to sit.
I have already booked to go back next year!

Spent three nights here at the end of Sept. Zenji was perfect for me, I had the Sense of Jasmine room which was complete with A/C, ceiling fan, private bath and plenty of hot water and a comfortable double bed. Haji, the front desk guy, was very welcoming and helpful. Owners Anneloes and Manni also welcoming and helpful. The price was right. Breakfast very good with excellent service. Anneloes was prompt and complete with responses to my e-mails. They arranged my airport pickup, which made arrival easy. Mercury's restaurant and bar is a short walk away and was my favorite place both for food and sunset viewing. Also liked Zenji's no hassle gift shop.

This is a pleasant, moderate priced place to stay. I would not hesitate to return.

I stayed at the Zenji hotel for 2 nights at the end of a 2 week tour of Kenya and Tanzania.
It is a lovely relaxing hotel, the staff are very friendly and helpful and the coffee is scrumptious. You should try the cappucinos!!
I stayed in the room called 'Spice corner' and really liked the individual touches....
The rom had A/C and a lovely 4 poster bed.
It is an authentic hotel with a lot of character.
The main advantage of this hotel is it's proximity to the port, so if you are getting the ferry, it's ideal.
The only disadvantage is if you are a sinlge traveller, the area down by the ferry port leaves you feeling a bit uneasy, especially if you are walking back from the centre of Stone Town at night.
It is only a short walk to the main part of stone town, so this is only a small point.
You feel completely at home in the hotel, the minute you walk in, especially on the rooftop terrace, where they have free internet.
They don't sell alcohol, and the kitchen closes in the evening sometime, but you will want to eat in one of the restaurants in Stone Town anyway, so this is not a problem.
This is overall a great hotel, and I would recommend it.

Conveniently located a few blocks from the ferry and a two minute walk to the main street bordering the ocean this hotel was my group's choice place to stay! Sixteen of us stayed there for 4 nights and they were very willing to help us find ferry tickets and transportation to the other side of the island. The breakfast was delicious with fresh fruit and spiced fruit jams. Everything was VERY CLEAN all the time and SMELLED GREAT. One of our rooms had a balcony view of the busy street and the roof had a tremendous VIEW of the town. Close to museums, eateries, and shopping. Next to currency exchange company. 30 of us lived in TZ for 3 months and the 16 that went to Zanizibar found this place to be relaxing. We bought local fruit and food and ate together at night or played cards. We felt very safe and were very happy to stay there. AFFORDABLE, relaxing, comfortable- just what a vacation should be. We had so much fun walking the back streets and finding the coolest curio shop. I HIGHLY recommend this place to stay- I wouldn't stay anywhere else!
