“very close to ferry, clean, very basic”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 February 2014

We stayed here while part of an overlanding tour, so it wasnt our choice. Our double room was clean, and had what we needed (clean bedding, en suite, storage), with the exception of towels. however when we asked, they were quickly provided.
The ensuite, up two steps from inside the room, had a shower over a bath which would have been fine, except the bath had a HUGE crack in and so, we ciuld only use the shower, which then basically flooded the entire bathroom, down the steps, and started to enter the room. The steps into the bathroom were then slippy because not only were they wet, but they also had shampoo/shower gel on them - not great. We told reception staff, but they didn't seem that bothered.
We had breakfast on the roof, which was a choice of different style eggs or toast - and was suprisingly nicer than I'd expected. And the guy who served us was lovely :)
The hotel manager tried to help us book a flight while we were there, but in hindsight, he just ripped us off. We asked where we could book a flight and he said he would come with, as we wouldneed a taxi- he got a 'taxi' (who I believe was just his friend in a car), we drove literally 1/4 of a mile which we could have easily walked. When we asked what we owed, after a few minutes of them talking in Swahilli, and a few Erms, they asked for nearly £20!
Should I ever return to Zanzibar, I wouldnt stay here again.

A basic hotel that could do with refurbishment. Air con and fan in room plus a mosquito net over a comfortable double bed. Some basic toiletries as standard. The Manager Patrick could not be more helpful and met us off the ferry which is approx. 5 minutes walk away. The hotel is ideally placed to explore stone town . The breakfast is limited and the chef will toast the bread and prepare food to your taste.
Location is ideal.

Room Tip: Get the best room you can afford. The right hand side has more natural light.

it was a good hotel, the room was kept clean all the time, decent staff.
break fast was served in the terrace but it was very slow, only one staff was available who was serving and cleaning and the other staff came very late.

its a decent economical hotel in stone town

location wise the hotel is just a walking distance to the market (darajani), forodhani and other historical places in town

overall this hotel is good

Room Tip: room 306 seems to be a good room

We stayed at the safari lodge as part of our intrepid tour from Nairobi to Zanzibar so it was not our choice. The safari lodge is located close to the ferry terminal but is a short walk into the labyrinth that is Stonetown. Our tour booking agent met us fresh off the ferry and showed us how to get there which was very helpful as it would have been hard to find on our own. Our room was on the ground floor and was adequate but unremarkable. The room had a queen 4-poster bed with built-in mosquito net, a noisy but effective AC unit, a fan, a small table, a chair, and a wardrobe unit. The bathroom had a sink, toilet and shower which were all fine. The bed was quite hard but I still found it comfortable which is unusual for me. Our tour and the hotel recommended storing valuables in the hotel safe as there are not safes in the rooms. The safe system is a bit complicated, you have to go to reception and then fill out a little form detailing what you are putting in. They then wrap your items in masking tape and you sign and date the tape, then you sign and date a book. When you want to collect you need to present your piece of paper and then they will retrieve them for you. Only real issue is that the safe is only accessible from 8am-6pm which is annoying. Breakfast is served on the roof under cover and is ok with eggs if you ask, toast, jams etc, plus fruit and juice. Overall this hotel is basically average in that everything is ok but nothing is remarkable. We stayed in one other place in Stonetown which was the same price but was much better so there are better ones around if you look.

- Big beds
- Clean rooms
- Breakfast on the room top fantastic
- Staff very friendly and helpful
- Great spot to explore Stone Town from
- If it's your first time in Stone Town just be warned it's a maze, and very easy to get lost.

The Safari Lodge was my "homebase" while I was exploring Zanzibar. I spent several nights there. It is a very safe and clean place in the centre of Stone Town. There is a roof top which I used as my personal one for reading and relaxing.
Mr Patrick organized al my trips and I could always count on his help! Thank you so much!
If I ever should be back to Zanzibar, I definitely will stay in the Safari Lodge again!

We stayed here as a part of a tour, so it wasn't our choice. It met our group's needs, but was not memorable. We were lucky to have a room on the top floor so it was very dark and quiet, making for a good night's sleep despite a rock hard bed. Others in our group had some noise (voices) coming through their air conditioner from the neighbouring building. AC worked well and a fan was also provided. Breakfast was really poor, just cereal and fruit.
