We had a very nice stay at this hotel. the hotel is located very well, in walking distance from the touristic attractions and also from the ferry. the hotel has nice and confortable rooms and great roof top terrace. the food was also very good and the staff most friendly.

We stayed at Maru Maru for two days as part of our honeymoon in September 2013. Having arrived from a stressful journey late at night, we were greeted by friendly staff, a refreshing drink and wet flannel.

Room/hotel: The room was excellent with an amazing, modern bathroom. Four-poster bed, tv, wifi, hot water and air con. The hotel is build around a small courtyard with a fountain in it. We booked tours through the hotel as we were short on time - the trips were great but we definitely could have got it cheaper elsewhere. Also, we were on the third floor and the lift was broken! Good security on the door though.

Location: Right in the centre of stone town, you dont need to walk for long (less than 3 mins) to all the main attractions and boat dock.

Food and drink: The restaurant is on the roof which gives amazing views over the rooftops of stone town and out across the sea - perfect for cocktails at sunset! There is a happy hour in the evening and snack/bar food which is excellent. The drinks are very reasonable for such a lovely hotel, especially the local beers. Breakfast was included for us, the food was good but service could be slow at times for hot items - pastries, breads, tea/coffee and fruit are self service, with bacon, egg/pancake/omelet and sausage being cooked to order which can take a long time.

Would recommend this hotel if you are paying a short visit to stone town and want to be near all the attractions in a very nice, clean, friendly hotel.

I stayed in the hotel for three nights. The hotel is beautiful, has a terrace restaurant where food is served. The hotel has live performance/ band over the weekend. The rooms are clean and provided with air conditioning. The major drawback is the breakfast which is not so great; stale bread and low quality fruits.
The place is close to the old fort and house of wonders and stone town shopping area so the location is convenient if you are not a big eater.

I have lived and eaten in many places in Africa. I have also become very lenient about service as , I fully understand the logistics of remote locations, poor comprehension of English and unreliable staff. That said and without emotive language the facts speak for themselves, this meal was a complete disaster. We booked a table for a birthday party. We personally went to the venue earlier in the day to confirm booking. They kindly showed us our proposed table for the evening we were assured they were expecting us at 7 that evening. We arrived at 18h50 The table had been given away. We were hastily shoved in a dark corner. No napkins ,cutlery , side plates or placemats were provided. Menus were provided a order place on the understanding that they would be able to provide food within 2 hours as we had to leave before 9. The order had to be changed 3 times as food selections were unavailable. The food did not arrive for 2 and half hours.
It was stone cold. We had to go and find our own cutlery and napery We were now under pressure to make our transport commitment one of our parties food never turned up. There was no manager on duty. 2 and a half hours wait for a one course meal is really unacceptable even if you do say hakuna mata ,pole pole ,african time etc there is no way to excuse this.

Positives:
- Location.

Negatives:
- No wi-fi on the roons;
- Service in the restaurant are very very slow;
- Room is small;
- Food is at most ok.

Also, not hotel fault but someone have to tell the people of zanzibar that the way they "attack" the customers is very very anoying.

Only about 10-15 min taxi ride away from the airport (which cost us $10) we enjoyed our two night stay at Maru Maru before heading to Paje Beach. Upon arrival we had a much needed welcome drink and cold towel!

The location of the hotel is central to restaurants, shops and the seafront although we didn’t really go out much other than for a couple of short strolls in the day time and to book an organised tour to Prison Island and to the Sandbank (it was tiring getting hassled a lot when walking down the street).

The hotel was a nice place to retreat to with the hustle and bustle outside. We really enjoyed the terrace and if you don’t plan on going out much then this is the place to be as it’s nice to have a place to chill out (and admire the amazing sunset). We noticed that this was where a lot of the tourists came to anyway!

The room was nice, clean and comfortable. I enjoyed my breakfast as well - had fruit & an omelette each day – not sure about the cost as mine was included in the booking.

Wi-fi is free but you have to ask reception for a ticket with a username and password. There is also a hairdryer available if you need one – just ask.

Enjoy your trip to Stone Town!

We stayed in August in 2013, the hotel is in an excellent location near the seafront and I the centre of the town. We had a standard room which was lovely and big and very clean with good bed and aircon. There s no view out the window but we were out and about all day so didn't need one.

Breakfast was OK, wasn't best in Africa but was ok if not a little disorganised. Would stay again
