On first glance Maru Maru Hotel looks great, the lobby area is attractive, the courtyards nicely laid out and the roof bar and restaurant have great views of the city.
Rooms are small but clean, beds firm, pillows very firm.,Bathrooms newly refurbished with showers, not very consistent hot water though, also have to turn on 15 minutes before use.
The real problem with this hotel is that it is so noisy. the inner courtyards act as one big echo chamber to transmit the noise of the kitchen and bar which is on the 4th floor. Our first night we were on the 3rd floor directly beneath the kitchen. We moved to room 202, marginally better but the rooms are very noisy. Bring earplugs.!
Food for breakfast is ok, not much choice but they are obliging if you ask for something they will provide it, at least they
have wonderful coffee, spiced with cardamom and ginger.
The staff attempts to be helpful, everyone is pleasant, you could do a lot worse, especially if you don't want to stay in one of the more expensive high end boutique hotels in Stone Town.
The location is very good, you can walk every where.

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the kitchen, and the front of the property. Do not ask for room on the 3rd...

Maru Maru was an excellent place to stay, especially in comparison to the over-hyped, overrated Serena. The staff were professional and friendly, the rooftop restaurant/bar was a lovely place to watch the sunset (happy hour cocktails for 5,000!), and the sweet little cookies brought to the room each night were lovely. The bed was very comfortable and the bed net very hole-free. Every little detail at Maru Maru contributed to making it a lovely place to stay.

Fantastic hotel situated on a safe side street just a minutes walk to the main street and lots of great restaurants and bars. All the major attractions in Stone Town are within a short distance. There is a guard on site 24hours at the front door (our dude was super cool). The hotel itself is beautifully decorated with many pictures of celebrities and presidents who've stayed there. The rooftop has a great view and serves up a great breakfast. Would definitely recommend.

I stayed in Maru Maru hotel for 4 nights. The hotel located in stone town which is very convenient to walk to night market and stores in stone town. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Restaurant located at the top floor of the hotel. Need to walk and take the lift up there. Breakfast and dinner are very nice. The hotel also provide local day tours.

We stayed at Maru Maru one night before leaving Zanzibar, daughter to Z-airport, and I back to Dar es Saleem. The room was fabulous, cozy, cool air, sat-TV, stocked fridge and powerful shower. Nice to feel clean and human again. The roof-top bar/lounge was superb for watching the sunset over the ocean. Restaurant for dinner was delightful. Bar offered coupons for free cocktails. Breakfast buffet good for self-service. Unfortunately, elevator out of service during our stay. Highly recommended and staff driver took me to ferry for 10000TZ.
P.S. Make sure to purchase VIP/1st class tickets on ferry!!

Room Tip: Check for elevator service if you have trouble walking up stairs and heavy luggage. Ask for courtya...

Just steps from the Fordhani Gardens, seaside, and fort is a great boutique hotel - Maru Maru. The hotel is situated next to Fordhani Gardens and the Fort and you walk to anywhere from here. We stayed here for 4 nights and it was a great hotel. I had booked the hotel online and communicated with the general manager via email who was very responsive and nice. I had also booked an airport transfer from hotel, and they were there when we landed. Check in went smoothly and we were shown to our room.

We had booked 2 rooms as we are 4 people and the rooms are either 2 twins or 1 Queen. We got one of each. Booth rooms were decent size but the 2 twin bed room was a little bigger. Both had nice comfortable beds, with an armour closet, and a desk and chair. Both of them had nice size bathrooms as well. In the bathrooms, the hotel provides soap made by a local women's business cooperative which was a nice local touch. The Queen could fit 2 people, although it was tight.

Breakfast was included and that is served on the rooftop lounge/restaurant which had amazing views of Stone Town and the ocean. This is also where you can come and enjoy an amazing sunset (the only downside at night is that there is not enough lamps/candles/light so its pretty dark up there). Breakfast was standard cereals and toast, with fruits and an egg station. Coffee, and hot chocolate, were made by a machine.

Service at the hotel was very nice and attentive. There was free wifi in the hotel which was a major plus.

The hotel is located only a couple of steps away from Fordhani Gardens and the only negative thing about the hotel is the entrance/lobby. To get from the seaside/Fordhani Gardens to the hotel, you have to walk up a road that a night is dimly light (during the day, this is where all the taxis hang out so creates easier access to taxis). There are plenty of people walking and we never had a security issue, but it is something to consider. The lobby is right off the street so there is no major entrance or sitting area; not a big deal to me but some in my group cared about that.

Overall, location was good and hotel and service was excellent. The only downside would be the entrance but other than that, a great hotel.
