Big bedrooms and nice rooms. The menu was a bit limited (we did visit during Ramadan though) and the breakfast needed topping up. But staff were friendly and the location is great. Nice indoor pool, which was great when our sighteeing was cut short by a rain storm, but we felt a little uncomfortable making noice with all the other guets around.

Room Tip: Up towards the top the rooms are great, with a lovely rooftop view across Zanzibar.

Stayed here of a night post Nungwi before climbing on board a tiny, one propeller Zanair flight to Dar Es Salaam. Our room was fantastic (top floor- room 40 something), very large, comfy bed, beautifully furnished and with an open air shower/bath. There is also a wonderful Ethiopian restaurant 4 minutes walk away, just go out of the hotel entrance by the pool and turn left. Stone Town is a great place to spend a day or two, with amazing colonial charm – have a wander through the narrow streets and lose yourself.

The hotel has great decoration and collection of old furnitures and other antiques. Our room was big and comfortable exept the bed which is pretty short and I couldn't fit straight (186cm)..
Breakfast is fine, rooftop has tables and chairs but no service.

Room 41 has a great balcony and is the only room with sea view but you have to climb many stairs to get there. If its taken you better get a room on the second floor and climb less...
Room 32 is large with 3 beds which are small doubles or large singles. Air con is a window one which make a lot of noise.

The hotel was formerly a palace, but the atmosphere hasn't changed. I loved the building, the wood work, the furniture, the rooms, in general the way the building has been renovated with respect for the architecture on Zanzibar. I especially enjoyed the swimming pool that also perfectly fits into the palace atmosphere. After a day of discovering Stone Town, a refreshing swim is just what you need.
I do not normally stay in upmarket hotels, but I found Dhow Palace Hotel really worth the money. Also, since it was the end of the low season, we managed to get a nice discount, so it is worth discussing the rates with management.

Room Tip: I loved the rooms that have balconies overlooking the inner courtyard swimming pool.

We stayed here for three nights, in the Presidential Suite. Was a pleasure and surprise to walk through the door. Did not really need all the space but it was good to be able to spread out. Plenty of verandahs to sit out on. Room was clean and with the overhead fans, air conditioning, mosquito nets, room fridge with cold water, TV and free wifi all our inside needs were met! The walk up all the stairs was good exercise! The hotel is well located to the shopping alleys, the water, taxi rank, money changers, tour offices, evening seafood market at Forodhani Gardens and with a little searching, the Cinnamon Spa. There are individual safety deposit boxes in the front office where you are given your own key. The breakfast was adequate. We did not eat in the restaurant. We would stay here again. The pool was an excellent spot to cool and dust off after a day out and about.

A glamorous hotel that was among the best value we stayed in on a 2 week holiday in the country. We were also able to negotiate a discount of about 25% on the advertised rate so definitely worth trying to do that. Breakfast was the standard setup of beef stir fry and doughnuts

I wish to share my experience in dhow palace hotel in stone town. together with my wife we stayed for 2 nights. the room and bathroom is clean, breakfast is quite bad, the way how it is presented does not make you feel very safe about cleanliness. the inner part of the hotel creates echo and in the late evening and early morning the citchen staff create an enourmous noise, apparently a clear lack of discipline. If you can not sleep in noisy environment then your night will be short.
Be careful. Hotel staff is stealing: When we packed our luggage before departure I recognized that a glass jar with a cork cover was lacking. This jar was not locked in the suitecase and has no commercial value but of importance to me. As I new exactly where I had put it I called the reception informing them that it has been stolen. After some hassle which I skip finally the manager was involved and he asked me for half an hour time with follow up. Within the promised time he returned telling me that the cleaning lady had taken it !!! and it in her locker !!! She will come early in the morning and will give it back.
My evaluation:
- Hotel staff is stealing, be careful, even non valuable things, do lock everything away or do not stay here
- Follow up by management is excellent. I could not believe my eyes when the stolen good was returned in the morning.
A strange, tanzanian experience.

If not for the theft I would have given a 'satisfying' note. finally: location is good

Dhowpalace, Manager at Dhow Palace Hotel, responded to this review, 1 October 2012
Dear tthhoommaass

Thank you very much for your thorough and very detailed review of Dhow Palace Hotel. We do apologize for the lack of discipline some of our members of our restaurant / kitchen staff. This is being addressed, and will be rectified to the benefit of guest coming to stay with us.

It would also be of great help to us if you could give us further and clearer details as to what made you feel that our kitchen / restaurant is unhygienic. Please feel free to email us at manager@dhowpalace-hotel.com with the details.

However we need to get a few facts on the table when it comes to the big, eye catching heading, and its critique of Dhow Palace and accusations against our staff.

After your check out, and a good week before this review on Trip Advisor, we did a thorough interview with our member of house-keeping staff who was responsible to tidy and clean your room. It is also worth mentioning that this particular house-keeper has been with Dhow Palace for roughly 20 years now, and is well experienced and knows the particulars of her duties very well.

The glass jar of “(...) no commercial value (...)” was placed on a table with empty plastic water bottles (note: the complementary water bottles found in the fridge).

House-keeping enters room, discovers the bottles (and the jar), and like any cleaner in any hotel concluded that the items on the table were litter, and of “no commercial value”, and decided to take them out of the room along with other rubbish found in the provided room bins.

We do encourage our staff to be environmentally conscious, so any plastic waste, bottles etc are recycled. So your empty jar, along with empty bottles from all rooms were taken down to the Housekeeping office, and locked in a cupboard at end of shift. This is also where your jar was found in the morning of your departure, and given promptly to you.

We are curious as to why an empty bottle/jar of “(...) no commercial value (...)” but of importance to you was placed on a table along other empty bottles, and could so easily been taken for rubbish? (As was the case here).

If the jar in your opinion, clearly has no commercial value, apart from a personal value, would not then a potential thief, who also saw the jar , arrive at the same conclusion as yourself?
(And try instead to steal something that is commercially valuable, and which he/she could get real good money for? That is, if we had the thieving sort of staff working for Dhow Palace.)

To take this as far as accusing members of staff of stealing is farfetched; however, as we do practise freedom of speech, your opinion is well noted by us and by many more on this forum.
