This is a beautiful old hotel with big, ensuite rooms with colorful antique, but comfortable furniture. Our room also had a balcony with chairs, and a working AC. The roof is a good place to observe parts of the city and ocean, listen to the many muezzins, or you can eat a meal at one of the tables here upon request. We also appreciated the breezy top-floor sitting area with a small bathroom where we could rest when we were waiting to be taken to the airport and had to check out of our room. The food (including breakfast) isn't great, and the breakfast area is rather dark, but there is another room nearby, open to the sky, with great light for drinking tea or visiting. The pool looked nice, but it was oddly located right in the bottom level of the hotel in a courtyard that was open to many people's balconies and/or rooms. Do bring earplugs if you come, as our room's balcony overlooked a neighborhood and a rooster started crowing at 3:30 a.m. until after we had left for the day. (To be fair, there were two roosters, so I couldn't always be sure which one was crowing. Either way, it was not conducive to sleeping.) This is a pretty authentic local hotel, and worth a visit.

Room Tip: The top floor rooms are the best.

Big bedrooms and nice rooms. The menu was a bit limited (we did visit during Ramadan though) and the breakfast needed topping up. But staff were friendly and the location is great. Nice indoor pool, which was great when our sighteeing was cut short by a rain storm, but we felt a little uncomfortable making noice with all the other guets around.

Room Tip: Up towards the top the rooms are great, with a lovely rooftop view across Zanzibar.

Stayed here of a night post Nungwi before climbing on board a tiny, one propeller Zanair flight to Dar Es Salaam. Our room was fantastic (top floor- room 40 something), very large, comfy bed, beautifully furnished and with an open air shower/bath. There is also a wonderful Ethiopian restaurant 4 minutes walk away, just go out of the hotel entrance by the pool and turn left. Stone Town is a great place to spend a day or two, with amazing colonial charm – have a wander through the narrow streets and lose yourself.

The hotel has great decoration and collection of old furnitures and other antiques. Our room was big and comfortable exept the bed which is pretty short and I couldn't fit straight (186cm)..
Breakfast is fine, rooftop has tables and chairs but no service.

Room 41 has a great balcony and is the only room with sea view but you have to climb many stairs to get there. If its taken you better get a room on the second floor and climb less...
Room 32 is large with 3 beds which are small doubles or large singles. Air con is a window one which make a lot of noise.

The hotel was formerly a palace, but the atmosphere hasn't changed. I loved the building, the wood work, the furniture, the rooms, in general the way the building has been renovated with respect for the architecture on Zanzibar. I especially enjoyed the swimming pool that also perfectly fits into the palace atmosphere. After a day of discovering Stone Town, a refreshing swim is just what you need.
I do not normally stay in upmarket hotels, but I found Dhow Palace Hotel really worth the money. Also, since it was the end of the low season, we managed to get a nice discount, so it is worth discussing the rates with management.

Room Tip: I loved the rooms that have balconies overlooking the inner courtyard swimming pool.

We stayed here for three nights, in the Presidential Suite. Was a pleasure and surprise to walk through the door. Did not really need all the space but it was good to be able to spread out. Plenty of verandahs to sit out on. Room was clean and with the overhead fans, air conditioning, mosquito nets, room fridge with cold water, TV and free wifi all our inside needs were met! The walk up all the stairs was good exercise! The hotel is well located to the shopping alleys, the water, taxi rank, money changers, tour offices, evening seafood market at Forodhani Gardens and with a little searching, the Cinnamon Spa. There are individual safety deposit boxes in the front office where you are given your own key. The breakfast was adequate. We did not eat in the restaurant. We would stay here again. The pool was an excellent spot to cool and dust off after a day out and about.

A glamorous hotel that was among the best value we stayed in on a 2 week holiday in the country. We were also able to negotiate a discount of about 25% on the advertised rate so definitely worth trying to do that. Breakfast was the standard setup of beef stir fry and doughnuts
