“Atmospheric, convenient and comfortable Old Town hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2013

Top notch service, amenities, charming detail, and ambiance. Nothing's perfect -- internet was a little spotty, and hot water was too -- but this is to be expected in a 450 year old building. We stayed two different times and both times we were very comfortable in spacious family rooms which included two large very comfortable beds and one smaller one, mosquito nets, a refrigerator, coffee pot, AC, ceiling fans, and a good TV. One room had a balcony on the street, the other had a balcony on the inner courtyard with its lovely fountain. Pool is gorgeous, small, cool. There are common areas and sitting rooms that are charmingly decorated in the Swahili style. The best feature is the very top level of the roof where you can get a drink and watch the sun go down as the call to prayer rings out from all the neighboring mosques. No alcohol served.

We stayed only one night in Stone Town and chose the Dhow Palace based on the reviews here. We were really happy with our stay. We had the Executive King Suite because we wanted a sea view and also wanted to stay in the old wing. However we did not realize that there are three flights of stairs!! Loved the open air shower! We did not have any of the meals so cannot speak for the restaurant. They gave us a boxed breakfast because we had an early morning flight to Arusha. The boxed meal was so-so. We didn't eat most of the stuff. Great location for walking to Forodhani Gardens and exploring the maze of alleyways. Would definitely stay there again if we ever visit Zanzibar (and I hope we do!) However I felt that one afternoon in Stone Town was more than enough.

Room Tip: The Executive King room is on the top floor with a double bed and an adjoining sitting room. Open ai...

Beautiful old building in the heart of the old city. Large room, quiet for Stone Town. Decent enough breakfast. Mosquito net on bed. Free wifi throughout the hotel. Restaurant was fairly average: I'd recommend a visit to the Emerson Spice Hotel for at least one meal. For alcohol the nearby Sunset Bar is a good choice.

Paid $80 USD per night directly to the hotel. Credit Cards accepted with no surcharge.

This is a lovely old hotel. The management has done a fine job of updating while retaining the charm of the original structure. There is a lovely pool in the center of the hotel and comfortable lobby areas.

The rooms are large, probably due to the age of the building. Of course there are some antiquated fixtures in the baths and they are beautiful. Where can you find intricate tile work in these days? We had comfortable air conditioning and a ceiling fan that provided welcome relief from the squelching heat in Stone Town. Service and maintenance were very responsive while we were there. A light fixture broke in the bath room during our visit and they quickly replaced it and cleaned up the broken glass.

The breakfast is plentiful and hearty! Wonderful coffee, a huge variety of breakfast foods: eggs, fresh baked breads and pastries, tropical fruits, local foods typical of Zanzibar. We really enjoyed the breakfasts! One day we requested room service and they promptly brought us some coffee.

This a great value-priced option in Stone Town, extremely convenient and close to great restaurants and shopping.

We only stayed one night here but could have stayed longer. The hotel is full of character. The rooms were very comfortable. The bathroom fittings were a bit rickety but they worked! We had a small balcony with views over the town's rooftops. The food was good. The pool is very small and is in a very public place but it looked nice. The staff were helpful and efficient. We would definitely stay here again. Grab a free map of Stonetown to find your way about and eat at the street market in the evening. It's cheap and interesting. Try the freshly pressed sugar cane and ginger drink, it was yummy.

A lovely, well renovated place that has a history and is in the very centre of Stonetown. The staff are super friendly and they packed me a huge breakfast when I had to depart very early. The price I negotiated was very competitive and I have no hesitations in recommending this hotel.

We stayed at the Dhow Palace for one night while visiting Stonetown. The hotel is an amazing find. Well located; beautiful individually furnished rooms and a fantastic attentive staff. Please try the mocktails - the bananarama was a particular favourite.
