We had 3 nights in Stone Town and stayed at the excellent Dhow Palace. The room was stunning, the pool was great and all the staff helpful and friendly. We will definitely return if we ever visit Stone Town again.

Uncomplicated and efficient staff that didn't bother us at all. Very clean rooms and decent breakfast buffet. Nice location to explore stonetown. Very pleasant experience after jambiani hustle. Walkable distance to major eateries.

I stayed in Dhow Palace for 5 days, reserved it in advange through Booking.com, no problem, The place itself is historically interesting and beautiful, but the management seems to still live the Dark Ages. On my 4th day I had a visitor from mainland, whom I naturally took to admire the hotel and offered her a glass of water in my balcony.

We barely sat down when the phone rings. Assistant manager calls, very nervous, saying that "the visitor" must leave immediately. I asked, what's the problem, he says "security and safety issue". I went down to reception to sort it out, and to confirm that this young lady, was no threat to the hotel or its visitors.

At this point, the assistant manager got hysterical, saying that the visitor must leave my room immediately, right now, right this minute. The poor girl was sitting alone in my balcony and watching this episode. The manager refused to explain, what was so bad about this visit, just kept repeating "I am in charge, hotel rules" etc.

I got pretty frustrated, so I went up to my room, asked my guest to wait downs stairs and and booked her a room, so we could sit and talk like normal people. I was ready to pay 80 USD for just to show some manners to this guy.

This, however, did not suit the assistant manager. He said that the hotel in fully booked! Even though I had my confirmation, and could see, that there were vacancies.

Eventually the manager run away, from the hotel, refusing to have a decent conversation.

So, if you are black and female, you are not very welcome to this place. I've never witnessed that kind of lack of manners in any hotel around the world. Racist and just plain ugly.

Young, black woman on a balcony, creates a huge problem for these people. I wonder if they know, that most of the guest are drinking their own alcohol in their rooms, or smoking pot in the rooftop? Maybe they just turn a blind eye to these things.

The restaurant is miserable and food very average, but if you want eye-candy and don't mind that kind of attitude from management, take a swing.

Also: be careful when you use hotel staff to fix you trips/taxis etc. They try to fix the prices up, in order to keep the difference themselves. GO directly to taxis or tour operators, its much more reliable!

Dear Michael P

Thank you for the time and trouble taken competing the review.

I do understand your disappointed when we asked you to spend the time with your guest anywhere in the hotel premises (restaurant, pool side and lobby) except in the room.

Every hotel has different rules and regulations in place in order to make their guest's stay enjoyable and most importantly free from problems and unwanted incidents.

Therefore for the "Safety & Security" of all our valued guests including yourself, guests of hotel residents are not allowed in the the rooms.

Contrary to your comments, at Dhow Palace we have visitors from all over the World, people of different nationalities and races. We have always treated our guests equally, respectfully and with dignity regardless of their gender and colour.

I do apologize for any inconvenience(s) caused, and i also hope you understand our point of view.

I hope you will come back to stay with us and this incident won't be of an issue.

My husband and I had a one night get away, and chose the Dhow Palace. Great location very quiet at night, really nice to have working AC this time of the year as well. We didn't get a chance to use the pool, but it is a very nice looking pool very clean and well maintained. The room was very clean as well, with a nice little balcony. The shower was a bit awkward, but not a huge issue, and the bed a bit small for two tall people. If we get a chance to return we will have no hesitation booking here again, and we would happily recommend it to anyone. It is great value for money and one of the better choices in Stone Town. We had a lovely stay, the staff were helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: if you are happy to climb lots of stairs get the best rooms available, it'll be worth it.

We stayed at the Dhow Palace in October 2013. It's a very quaint and clean hotel, lovely staff and we had a huge room. Full of antiques and funky art in the old town but very close to the waterfront and shops. This hotel you can actually find your way back to on your own which was really nice. The only thing I wasn't happy with was the air con, but that might have been us fooling with the remote. It was really hot and sticky when we stayed there but I wish we would have had more than one night to explore the town on our own and to use the pool too. Food was great and overall we really enjoyed our stay there!

Room Tip: We stayed in an outside room on the top floor. The stairs are steep so maybe pick a floor lower down...

This was my 3rd stay at the Dhow Inn, don't know why this is the first time I'm reviewing them.

You gotta love the Dhow Inn. Its location, in the somewhat quieter part of Stone Town's Unesco World Heritage site center is impossible to bear. This is my favorite part of the city: 2mins walking distance to both seafront, the picturesque neighborhood of Vuga and the some great restaurants.

The rooms are simple yet in my opinion are some of the best value in town. AIr Conditioning, balconies, bottles of water, good mosquito nets, clean bathrooms, everything you expect and need.

Above all thou, it's about two things at the Dhow Inn for me. Firstly, it's a historical building that has its roots deep in Zanzibar's century old history. You feel that charm everywhere in the building.

Secondly, the pool. Last week when I was there you could LITERALLY not walk in Stone Town between 11am-4pm. Heat, humidity, it was just impossible. Having the luxury of a pool (specially at this price range) is a underrated blessing

A home away from home as someone wrote here recently.

We stayed here from the 25 until the 28th of December 2013. We were blown away by the fine interior of this hotel. A lovely pool and beautiful nostalgic rooms.
The hotel is situated good and every time we entered this hotel it was like coming home. But the thing we liked the most was the wonderful service! On the day before our departure the manager mr. Mouzamir allowed us to use all the facilities of the hotel, because of our late departure. This was much appreciated by us!!!
In short: a truly a home away from home.
Thank you Dhow Palace!
