“Don't pick Chavda”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2011

As part of our Zanzibar honeymoon we spent three nights at Chavda Hotel.
From the outside the hotel looks great. It's very pretty and both the outside, the hallways, and the courtyard are kept in the old Stone Town style.
Besides, everything was bad at the hotel. The rooms are dark and smelly with rusty bath rooms. The view from the rooftop restaurant was beautiful but the food was terrible.

Our first problem occured soon after arrival. We had booked a honey moon suite via Expedia but were giving a small room. We asked whether this really was a suite and they told us that it was indeed a suite. Later when asking to see a regular double room we realized that we had been given a regular and not a suite. Getting a refund for the two nights we spent in the regular room took hours that we could had spent in the city.

Besides the hotel had a terrible staff policy. When we returned a dish we hadn't ordered we saw our waiter getting yelled at by a superior until he began crying. Other staff told us any returns would be taking from their salaries.

We stayed here for 1 night in between flights from Tanzania to Kenya. The hotel was perfect for what we needed. The staff were very friendly for the most part and when they heard we were on honeymoon, they very kindly put a vase of flowers and a bottle of white wine in our room. The air conditioning was brilliant!! There are no lifts but that didn't bother us. The only issue we had was the breakfast. We were being collected at 0800 for the airport. They sais breakfast started at 0700, but in actual fact, it seems the staff were only starting at 0700. There was pretty much nothing out to eat/drink at 0700 and things came out piece meal over the following 30 mins. Eventually we had to leave to finish packing having really had very little. All in all it did the job for 1 night, but if I was staying longer I would have chosen somewhere with a higher star rating as Stown town is hot and busy and the leisure facilities there are very limited.

The location of Chavda is great. As breakfast is included, after a quick jaunt to the 6th floor, you are rewarded with fantastic views. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms are well equiped with nice furniture, quality mosquito nets, air conditioning. The price is high, but so are most during "high-season." The only negative was the bathroom. It was very muggy (even with cold showers) which attracted the mosquitos and the smell was unpleasant. Good wireless access in the room and on the rooftop hotel. They were helpful in arranging a spice tour, which was very interesting and quite warm.

This hotel is in the maze of little streets right in the center. It's in a good location that's also close to the central market. The rooms are all very large with traditional wooden canopy beds. The bathrooms are a good size. The hallways have beautiful wooden floors and the characteristic heavy zanzibarian wooden doors.
They have excellent service. We needed to take the ferry to Dar early inthe morning before breakfast time, so the hotel ended up preparing the breakfast for us ahead of time, so that we could eat at 6am in our rooms.
The only odd thing that I found was that the water was a little salty when I took a shower.

The best points of the Chavda are the great location in the middle of StoneTown, the charming decor in restored Zanziberi mansions, and the rooftop restaurant with great views over Stone Town.

The 2 rooms we had were spacious and comfortable - with beautiful Zanziberi woodwork, large beds with top quality mosquito nets, ample comfortable seating, nice wardrobes for storage, good AC, and other amenities. The en suite bathrooms were nice, with good shower water pressure and ample hot water.

The location in the heart of Stone Town made it perfect for exploring the alley ways, harbour and shops of town.

The rooftop restaurant serves a fairly standard decent B&B breakfast. The one supper we had there was extremely good - members of our party ordered from different parts of the diverse menu, selecting Indian, Swahili, Chinese and pasta choices -- surprisingly, all of the choices were good, including one of the best fish in coconut sauces I had anywhere in on Zanzibar. Contrary to what at least one guidebook said, the restaurant does offer a full range of alcoholic drinks.

The hotel does have free wireless internet - but it is only available for a narrow range around the business centre on the ground floor, not throughout the rooms or the public areas of the hotel.

This generally positive review is only offset by one unfortunate aspect of the stay - despite the comfortable beds, none of the 5 members of our party slept very well in either of our rooms. We were all awakened in the middle of the night by a loudly crowing rooster that continued from 3.30 until the time we left around 10 a.m. While the hotel is certainly not responsible for the rooster, it does speak to the need for better sound-proofing in a hotel located in the middle of a busy city.

Hi this was our first trip to zanzibar, being a hoilday weekend, couldnt get rooms out there, hence on constant search found this chavda hotel. Having reached there at 10 pm , the service was just only arguement, for giving us rooms without locks and demanding us to check out at midnight 11 , if we wherent ready to take up rooms without locks, only on insisting to call the police , they managed to fix locks to doors, its very expensive without any service and not worth the money though being spacious, had dirty sheets placed neatly on cots without being washed, it was so discusting to use those having small kids. The reception doesnt attend calls and puts down the phone if continuously being disbursed. Such a bad experience at chavda.

no more to say really - we booked a triple room and paid quite a lot for it. the foam mattresses (not sprung) were damp, almost wet. the musty smelling room was infested with mosquitos, the aircon was off all night, there was no fan. we even found a couple of 'curly' hairs in the sheets. when we told them we weren't staying another night they still charged us for the whole period and were very unhelpful and unfriendly. the worst hostels i've stayed in during my youth were all a million times better. the only positive was the view from the rooftop bar which we watched sunrise from instead of spending any more time in the horrible room. don't let this hotel ruin your zanzibar paradise experience!
