“good location”
Reviewed 3 March 2013

I stayed in Shangani Hotel for 2 nights and was quiet happy. The rooms are simple, but very clean and have aircon, hot water and a fridge. It is very good located in the middle of stonetown and only minutes away from all the attractions and the port. Breakfast is in the price included and you will have it upstairs on a terrase with a nice view over the city and the ocean.
They have an internet cafe downstairs, but this is very slow.. If you need internet and have your own laptop, just go to the Dolphin Cafe opposite, where there is free Wifi.

We were meant to stay at Hotel Shangani just for one night during our visit to Stonetown. But things turned out quite different and disappointing..
At first we were being "welcomed" by a woman, presumably the boss, with a fierce expression in her face and not talking very much with us; not a warm welcome at all.
Then she told us the price for the room is now more than previously agreed.
We took a glimpse of the room, which was not nice at all, an uncomfy bed with a view on a tinroof, an unnecessary tv and a fridge.
Then we asked her, if we could pay with Tansanian Shillings (=national currency), because we were running out of dollars, but no good will from the boss..
But that's not all:
This woman/the boss at the reception started to argue in such a nasty and hostile way, she was screaming at us!
That is why we prefered to pay the charge ( half of room prize) and NOT stay in this hostile, cold, unfriendly place.
We would NOT recommend anybody to stay in this hotel!

The Shangani Hotel is located a short walk from the markets, shops and restaurants and bars of Stone Town. We stayed here for 2 nights after doing an overland camping tour of East Africa so a hotel bed and en-suite toilet / shower was quite a luxury! Our room was on the third floor and breakfast is served on the floor above on the rooftop terrace. There is no lift so this could be worth noting if you have mobility issues. The room was large and clean, the bed was comfortable, and the shower was clean. The room had an air con unit and a fan which brought a welcome respite from the hot streets of Stone Town. The breakfast is very good, fresh fruit, toast and eggs, and the view from the terrace is great. A cheap and cheerful base for exploring all the Stone Town has to offer.

Across from the Shangani post office in old downtown Stonetown sits the somewhat dowdy facade of the Shangani hotel. Walking into the lobby, you realize that you need to go deeper into the building to find the real front desk. This hotel is low on the cost factor but provides good clean accomodation coupled with AC and TV as well as hot water. The rooms are comfortable and most have an adjoining balcony from which to savour the smells of the old town. Breakfast is included and you get fruit, toast, coffee, tea and eggs to your liking, all with a fantastic view of the harbour and the outer islands. Did I mention there is also a fridge in the room. This is not fancy, but is a good return on the investment and will allow you to take evening strolls down to Forhodani gardens and the night food stalls...or you have the availability of several different restaurants within a few steps of the hotel......highly recommended for the budget conscious.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing west and your balcony will have a private view of the sunset....spectacular

Clean biggish rooms but there are bugs of all kind. No bed bugs but roaches, mozzies & lord knows what not riddled with them but theyre there! Bed was comfortable, great location near shopping area & night market. Breakfast on the roof was lovely but slow service with a smile though.

We stayed in the shangani hotel as part of an organised tour around Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar. This was our first night in a hotel after 10 nights camping on the trip, so it was nice to have a mattress. The location is pretty good, right in the centre of Stone Town. The rooms were adequate at best. There are soon good views from the bar / restaurant on the top floor. The rooms are basic, but ours did have air con which was a relief as it was very hot and humid on Zanzibar.

My friends and I had originally reserved two nights at Shangani, but had to check out after one night. Our rooms were located on the 2nd floor and there was no running water in the bathroom/toilet. The front desk person informed us that the water had already been used up by the guests staying on the 1st floor and consequently, they brought us buckets of water so we could bathe. Upon check out, the owner of the hotel was at the front desk with the attendant and he made a big deal about us checking out ahead of time. He proceeded to tell us that the water problem was not the hotel's issue, but instead it was our problem. Definitely not a place I will return to EVER.
