As soon I walked in, there was a huge difference compered to last time I went. Obviously it was a positive difference. I liked how the service's were excellent and the staff were friendly thank you Jimmy and Juma. Food was served chronologically and the African food was delicious. The room I slept in was comfortable and relaxing the window view was amazing and calm also due to the wonderful weather. I appreciate the kindness and friendliness of each individual staff. However I do recommend this hotel to any person wish to go Zanzibar, there are lots of advantages of staying there one is that you are in the town and there are lots to see it's closer to the Museum which is amazing. Try seeing it for yourself.

I've stayed there with my boyfriend for only one night. We appreciated only 2 things: it's in the city centre and the price was very low (more or less 13€ per night per person at the end of April). But that's it... the room was small, the bed covers were dirty (in fact we slept on our towels), the bathroom was broken and the boiler was so old and messed up that in case of explosion, we would have died there! If you're looking for a very cheap place to stay with your friends, it can be fair... but if you're looking for a nice place to stay with your boyfriend/girlfriend... GO AWAY!!

We stayed here in March of 2013. The hotel arranged for us to be picked up (no charge) and went out of their way to help us in any way they could. They even kept our luggage for a week while we traveled to other places on Zanzibar. The hotel's accommodation is basic, the breakfasts average but the service level is superb. They have a restaurant attached that serves local Tanzanian food at competitive prices. The location is also great near the garden's, old fort, beach area...
If you're looking for a basic, no frills hotel this may be the place. Thanks Jimmy and James.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a room with air conditioning ( it can be noisy) if heat is a problem for you.

I was backpacking through Stonetown and I saw Coco in lonely planet's travel guide. I decided its location near the gardens and the old fort made it a good bet as to where I should go. It is true, the location is great... a 2 minute walk from the food festival each night in the gardens (be careful what you eat at the garden festival... it is cool to see all the food, but as many people will warn you, most of it is not safe). I digress. The room was a complete let down. There are no towels or shower curtains. Only two of three ceiling fans worked. Only 2 of 5 outlets worked and I woke up with a rash after sleeping in the bed. Needless to say... I moved on to the next hotel the next day. Their spice tour is good though many other hotels have great spice tours. The spice tour and location are not enough of a reason for me to stay there again.

Room Tip: If you have to stay here try to get a room high up. The lower rooms are much smaller but the same pr...

Right from the staff to the food to the room ....this is the famous horror show in Stone Town...Please don't experience it , unless you are in the mood to spoil yours or your travel companion's party....I went solo , but i can imagine how bad it could be for families and others...Would never recommend this place to anyone as right from the staff (owner James and the rude Jimmy on the concierge)....to the restaurant (horrible and tastless food) ...and to the rooms (stuffy, mouldy, dusty and no ventilation) ....with run down a/c's..this is disaster calling to your zanzibar dreams....Would heavily suggest tembo guest hotel or zanzibar serena inn...but not this shanty....btw people smoke and socialise till wee hours so no use taking non a/c rooms...plus in zanzibar you need an ac no matter what...

Room Tip: Only A/c rooms ...if the A/c's work that is

I stayed for 3 nights, paying $35 for each night. Considering the price, and the cost of accommodation elsewhere in Stone Town, Coco De Mer was a brilliant find.

The staff were amazingly helpful and were always on hand to answer my many questions. They offer a booking service for a shuttle bus to either the East or North of Zanzibar which costs $10 each way (15,000/- Tsh) which saved the hassle of booking from outside.

Breakfast consisted of fruit, toast, eggs done as you like them and some fresh fruit juice along with the usual tea and coffee. Decent breakfast, enough to get you going for a long morning in the streets and alleys of Stone Town. And given the fantastic location of Coco De Mer, I didn't have far to walk at all. Turn right as you come out of the entrance and you're in Forodhani Gardens, a brilliant location day and night.

The room itself did not have A/C but a fan was provided and more than did the job. The shower wasn't warm, but considering the weather, cooler water was much more preferable! Good nights sleep and the bed was comfortable. No issues with noise as some others have suggested.

All in all, decent place for the price and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here if I get the opportunity to visit Stone Town again.

Room Tip: Try get room higher up (room numbers 1,2,3)

location is great near the car ferry. breakfast is ok, and was included. everything else is not. the room was old and in poor condition. there was no ac and the celing fan was broken. they put in a mobile fan instead of fixing it. there are local people drinking and smoking right outside the room until 10pm and then the family who live in the hotel have a very noisy dinner. the staff are not friendly, although not rude either. Some staff are embarressed by the hotel.
