I stayed in the arabica suite and really enjoyed my time there. The bed is a "sultanbed"which is quite large. The sanitary is clean and tidy but nothing spectacular.
The "rooftop" I a nice place to have breakfast and get a drink at night. If you like staying in boutique hotels, definitely the place.

Try out the spice tea they offer downstairs.

We stayed in the Espresso room, which was nicely furnished, had everything we needed (including a locker and AC), but was definitely not as nice as it is in the pictures on their website. The rooms were quite clean, but also a bit dusty and not as cosy.
The Espresso room has the bathroom outside, but you get a key to the bathroom as well, so no one else can use it. The bathroom was also quite clean although the shower was pretty old and water presure bad.
Service can be improved, the staff was not very friendly and helpful and gave us a very laid back impression...actually the coldest attitude we experienced in Tanzania.
The location is fine, at the end of the main shopping street. It was alright to walk there at night as well, although if you spend the evening at Forodani Gardens you will have to take a taxi back and ask the driver to take you to the door (which is cheap and no problem).
The lodge has no restaurant, but a nice roof-top terasse for breakfast and a great coffee place downstairs. There are dinner options with good food very close by, ex. House of Spices (recommendable), Emerson Spice or Swahili House.

Zanzibar Coffee House Hotel has only eight rooms and is above a rightly popular cafe. The building has been well restored and the rooftop area is ideal not only for breakfast but also for relaxing when the touts in the streets are starting to test your patience.

We stayed for 5 nights and our room was fine. A couple of small problems were fixed promptly and the staff are all friendly and helpful. It's position is pretty much in the centre of Stonetown and there are staff who can show you to destinations which you might take a while to find yourself. The only downside i can think of is that they are mean with the soap and there is no shampoo provided.

Highly recommended.

Tip - the Lonely Planet map is wrong in where it shows this hotel and Google maps are not any better. The only accurate map I have seen is one handed out by travel agents locally.

Great location for exploring Stone town. A fabulous hotel with air on and lots of original features that make this unique hotel a joy to stay in. The downstairs coffee shop is well frequented but the private breakfast area on the roof top is superb and a wonderful place to start your day. A charming place to stay, lovely friendly staff, clean and amazing decor in the rooms in keeping with the style of stone town.

Room Tip: I think the back rooms may be a little quieter.

We stayed only one night in this hotel and it's a true regret! Next time in Zanzibar we want to stay one week there!
Located inside the old city, be prepared to carry your luggage for 150 meters, as the cab cant drive there.
The hotel is very well integrated in a modest street, but once you enter, it's a rare find! Charming and laidback atmosphere, friendly staff, india meets Marocco meets Iran interior design... You feel being the guest of a very bohemian sultan, or Hemingway!
We had the Capuccino Suite for the night: Nice antic furniture, soft glazy and colorful concrete, little stairs to go in the bathroom, antic details all around...Really romantic! and cozy bed!
The wall are VERY thick, so no noise from the hotel, but there is a school next door, and you can forget sleeping late!
The coffee is of course close to prefection, so are the biscuits and cake.
Also, the breakfast in the roof top is magical ( and again, food and drinks are delicious).
Its also a convenient adress, as you are near good restaurants ( they don't serve diner), near the market and near the shops. Barclays bank is across the main street, 10 minutes walk.

To conclude, a perfect stay for BoBo ( bourgeois-bohemes), 30 something, thriftshop lovers.
This place has charisma!

Great location. Coffee shop on the ground floor. Our room was spacious and beautiful. Air conditioned. Great roof terrace for breakfast. Lots of character. Friendly staff. I would definitely stay there again.

We stayd two nights in this unique "petite hotel" in the middle of Stone Town. Room was good and clean considering local standards. Bathroom at the corridor was not so nice experience, but for two nights it was ok... Think they also have rooms with own bathroom. There was a nice cafe downstairs with good coffee and cakes. They roasted their own coffee there, so it was certainly fresh. The location of this hotel was in the middle of narrow streets of Stone Town. We thought it would be better to stay at the hotel, when it become dark... There was a nice patio upstairs where you could relax and see the town.
