“Authentic taste of Stone Town”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 September 2013

Right in the heart of Stonetown and handy to the sights and waterfront once you know how to orientate your way around the alleyways. The building is well presented and really gives you a sense of the history of the place. I thought the coffees were average and a couple of the staff members weren't particularly friendly compared to the other places I stayed at in Tanzania. I had a comfortable nights sleep and overall the stay was OK. Tip - for lunch or a few drinks head to the Rooftop of the Swahili House next door for a great view of the town and coast.

This is fantastic hotel with the best coffee in town. The staff is very happy and helpful. Rooms clean and breakfast was generous. Location is great, close to everything. The manager, Paola Gentili is a great host. We stayed for few nights and never had any problems. Internet was fast and smooth.

Room Tip: We stayed in Espresso, nice room, we liked it a lot.

We booked into one of the $150 per night rooms as that was the cheapest that was available. The shower didn't work properly for the three nights we stayed there, it was a drizzle rather than a shower of water. The hotel is next to a school so our rooms was really noisy early in the morning when the kids arrived at school. The only outside space is up on the roof so there isn't anywhere to go and have a drink or just chill out. I would definitely not recommend this hotel. We were hugely disappointed.

Room Tip: Don't get a room near the school

We took 3 rooms paid 500 usd for 1 night.
Excepting that this place would be good, this place is WORST AND NEVER RECOMMEND anyone to stay here.
The heater doesn't make hot water, room has lizards, the floor was dusty as if the room was closed for years, no wifi working. The coffee shop which is their speciality is closed by 6 pm.
The stair case is dark, lights r there but as if they are not there.
There is nothing like room service or housing.
Even when coming to the hotel the taxi can not reach the hotel therefore you have to get down at point and than YOU have to hire a trolley with your bags to the hotel.
If you need something in the middle of the night the hotel does not have any facilities, infact there is no receptionist but only the guard is there.
The staffs are not friendly.

We enjoyed very much our stay at Zanzibar Coffee House, a beautiful boutique hotel in the middle of StoneTown's labyrinthal alleys. The house itself has lots of character and its corridors are perfumed with a delicious smell of freshly brewed coffee.
As all rooms are different, this review can only discuss the Arabica Suite. This is not really a "suite" as there is only one room and a small bathroom by international standards (one shower, no bath), but it is beautifully decorated with antique furniture, a giant Zanzibari bed, and sofas on which it is a pleasure to lie down and relax, feeling like pachas, at the end of a sight-seeing day. A safebox is available. At $195 per night, this room is very expensive but not overpriced by comparison with other StoneTown hotels.
Apart from its unique ambiance, the greatest part of this hotel is the breakfast, in which home-made spicy jams are served with a choice of fresh fruits, muesli, muffins and the house's delicious coffee.
As mentioned in a number of other reviews, the only downside of this place is the behaviour of most of its staff, composed of several severe ladies who act as if they were offering you tremendous favours when you would only like them to do their job... At the restaurant downstairs, for example, the meals are quite expensive and do not always arrive when you order them (unlike the bills, which come right away :), but you should not expect anyone to care ! It is a pity that the hotel's management probably doesn't feel the need to improve this part since, given the other assets of this place, tourists always come in abundant numbers. This being said, the staff's lack of hospitality skills is not dissuasive, and we would most certainly be willing to come back to this beautiful place.

Room Tip: Make sure you know which room you book, as their prices and services differ : the arabica suite is g...

A great boutique hotel to stay at. The rooms are named after type of coffee drinks. I kept on get mine mixed up- I think it was Macchiatto. The room has high ceilings with wooden beams, a small window which looked out onto the street below. It was neat to look out when it was raining and you could see the water gushing down like a small river. I travelled with my sister, we had two beds, an attached bathroom. Very clean. Beautiful decor. Not over the top- simple yet adequate. Just soap is provided.
You get a complimentary drink when you arrive. I am not a coffee drinker, my sister loved the spiced coffee- i believe it had ginger, cinnamon, cardamon. I had the tea which is very milky- but that's how they make it in Tanzania.
The staff were really courteous. Non intrusive. Special mention to Asha, we almost forgot our paintings that we had purchased from a local artist , she ran out to give them to us.
The location was great. In the evening we went to Forodhani and pigged out on barbequed seafood, fresh fruit and madafu.
The terrace was my best part. It was so great to have breakfast up there. I think that was my best part of the hotel.

I stayed in the arabica suite and really enjoyed my time there. The bed is a "sultanbed"which is quite large. The sanitary is clean and tidy but nothing spectacular.
The "rooftop" I a nice place to have breakfast and get a drink at night. If you like staying in boutique hotels, definitely the place.

Try out the spice tea they offer downstairs.
