Like other small hotels in Stone Town, the Double Tree retains the quaint warm flavor that Stone Town is famous for. Sometimes that means there are surprises in store; not so at the Double Tree. If you want to experience the charm yet have the peace of mind that your experience will be at the caliber you are accustomed to, then the Double Tree is the place for you. The rooms are quaint and well appointed. You feel you are in Stone Town and not some large Western city, but the quality and attention to detail you expect are there.
Great bed for sleeping, turn-down service, slippers and robe, coffee/tea kettle with supplies, desk with a real chair, good lighting, bathroom with big towels and a very nice shower. All the details one could ask for. Oh, I need to mention free Wifi, important to for us whether we are on business or pleasure (as we were this trip).
This is a new hotel. Just opened recently. As a result, I expected some glitches but experienced very few. The staff are ALL very warm, friendly, welcoming and charming - even entertaining at times (the bellman as he explained (thoroughly) the room).
A nice restaurant is on the top floor with a balcony from which you can watch the dhows sail through the setting sun. Great way to relax, enjoy an aperitif followed by a nice meal. Breakfast was included in the stay but the breakfast buffet was not open so we ordered off the menu.
Being in Stone Town, the hotel is within easy walking distance or among all the attractions and shops popular with tourists.
I was not on business this trip, but was interested in any conference facilities for future reference. We live in Dar es Salaam where I am currently working on a project for the next year or so. I often conduct training sessions and prefer places where participants can get away from their normal routines. The Double Tree Conference Center is in a nearby building and can accommodate various sized groups. A group of eighty was holding a meeting during our stay. I requested a tour of the facilities. There are six rooms of varying sizes and all the technology necessary for today's meetings. I was impressed.
The Double Tree is not on the main street so make sure they know you are coming - the staff will meet your taxi when you arrive.
We had a very relaxing stay.
