Stayed here for two nights as part of an organised gorilla trek, after being told by my guide not to expect much, I was pleasantly surprised. Staff are engaging and welcoming with good English, it was like coming home to family each time you stepped through the door. The rooms are simple but comfortable (plenty of cupboard space and mosquito nets). Hot water is supplied by solar power, so don't be overly optimistic of a hot shower early morning, although water pressure is better than expected. Gardens and lounge/bar area with open fire are delightful, a great spot to relax and meet fellow travellers.

Either 3 course meal or buffet for dinner (priced at 38,000 shillings), only other option for food is to go into town. A bit higher priced than I expected, but the standard of food was excellent.

Take note of their warnings about security (ie don't leave valuables in sight and under windows), I was a sole traveller and had no concerns about my safety during my stay.

Some issues with wifi and electricity going out, but remember...this is africa! The staff were prompt with setting up candles etc and restoring electricity.

Highly recommended. Well done to all the staff on creating such a lovely stay.

This hotel is nicely located in a town with a history, close to the Congolese borders. Unfortunately it is still a 2-hours drive away from Bwindi National Park for the gorilla tracking.
When we arrived, we were treated very unfriendly by the staff. The walls of the bedroom were full with mould, as were those in the bathroom. We tried to get the bad smell out of the room by opening the windows, but this did not help. We were also warned not to open the windows, or when we did, to avoid leaving valuables close to the windows. We had to remove the carpets from the room to get a bit of the smell away. After trying one dinner, we decided to take the next dinners in town, which was a better and a cheaper option. The seats in the bar area should be replaced, at least with more comfortable cushions. You can see the glory of the 60s and 70s, but it needs to be updated and to get a fresher touch.
The room had a nice bathroom, with a good hot shower with very good water pressure. Nice bookshelves at the bar area with different types of books and magazines.

Stayed here for 2 nights. This hotel is centrally located in Kisoro and has a lovely colonial feel.
Rooms were very nice and the intricately folded towels and rose petals were a nice romantic touch (my room mate, Chris, did not take the hint though!)
Good service, food and value.

I stayed for a night at the Travellers Rest in Kisoro in April 2014, paying US$ 70 for bed and breakfast. I very much enjoyed my short stay and would gladly have remained for a few days more.

I have only positive things to say about this hotel. I loved my room, which was airy and comfortable, albeit simply furnished. The shower was fine, though Kisoro suffers from major water problems (it is built on porous volcanic rock, which does not retain rain water). The staff couldn't have been more pleasant or helpful; the manageress kindly arrranged for a 'special hire' car to take me to the Rwandan border, some 14 km away. The food was very good indeed. The gardens - a real paradise for birds and butterflies - are delightful, with glimpses of one of the volcanoes that overlook the town, when it is not shrouded in mist. On display throughout the hotel are numerous Congolese artefacts, including some rather spooky masks, all of which are for sale. In the evening, you can sit beside a roaring log fire in the lounge.

The only drawback is the lack of a wi-fi Internet connection, although I was offered the use of the hotel's sole laptop. There are, however, several Internet cafes within a few minutes' walk of the hotel.

Would I stay at the Travellers Rest again and recommend it to fellow travellers? Most certainly, although it is not, I think, somewhere that those on a tight budget would opt for, as it is quite expensive by Ugandan hotel standards.

Something of a landmark in Kisoro as Diane Fossey herself used to stay here, the hotel is styled in a colonial style and has a lot of charm as a result. The bar area in particular is very atmospheric with lots of wooden masks and carvings that add to the charm and are also for sale.

Probably the best place to stay in Kisoro; the setting and gardens are lovely and very peaceful, the rooms are clean and spacious and whilst they take a while to warm up - the spare water should be collected in the bucket provided for use in the gardens - the showers are excellent and just what you need after a hard day hiking or tracking gorillas and whilst the set menu was not always to my particular tastes (I would have preferred a buffet) the food was easily the best quality-wise in Kisoro.

Most importantly, the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and I would recommend Travellers Rest for anyone wanting to base themselves in Kisoro. Whilst we stayed in Nkuringo itself to track gorillas as the road to Bwindi from Kisoro is not great, the hotel is perfectly located for Mgahinga National Park where you can trek the Golden Monkeys or climb on of the Virunga Volcanoes - we did both - and the hotel is located very close to the Park Information Centre where you can learn all about the activities. It is also exceptional value price-wise!

The historic Traveler's Rest Hotel has seen better days and is in need of a facelift. The accommodation and meal were fortunately included in our package deal, as it seems overpriced. Pleasant, unexceptional meal and simple breakfast included. The gardens are lovely and lounge is complemented by a atmospheric fire place and bar. My room was shabby, in need of a coat of paint, luke-warm to cold shower, mosquito net was grimy and had multiple holes. I had pleasant sleep, however, my fellow travellers complained that their room was very noisy from street traffic.
