We came across this place by accident, our driver searching for a place to stay the night before heading into the Congo, and we were pleasantly surprised as we stepped into the beautifully decorated lobby. The giant windows offered a panoramic view of the pool followed by the lake and the surrounding landscape. There were hippos growling in the distance and we were told that we could catch a sighting because sometimes they come around at night to graze. We had always pictured staying in a place with a “safari”-like feeling with our own cottage and now we had the chance. Since we had no reservation, we had to wait 30 min for our room to be prepared. We waited around the pool, and were offered some juice and given a briefing on the hotel. We were then given the room bill and asked to pay upfront, which was awkward. We were then escorted to our room, which was not a cottage at all. It was a standard room, with two individual beds. And unlike the cottages, it was attached to the room of another guest, giving us the feeling of no privacy. I supposed this was the only room they had available and I was too tired to ask. In order to shower with hot water, you had to wait until the afternoon for them to light the brick oven, and then run the water for 15 min before the luke-warm water came out. Not fun and a big waste of water. We were looking forward to a nice private candle-lit dinner together when we noticed our table was set for three… driver included. That was really uncomfortable. In our past experience at hotels, the local drivers have their own area to dine. Not sure whether to speak in English or French, we ate our dinner in silence. As we headed back to our rooms, I noticed the driver was following in our direction and lo and behold, his room was in the cottage next to us! I was incredulous. The next morning at checkout, we asked the management why our local driver, who had paid 10% of what we paid, was given the big, beautiful room, she said ‘no reason in particular’. How idiotic has the management have to be to offer a mediocre room to its international customers and a grand suite to a local driver that didn't even care where he slept. Since we had paid in full the day before, it was difficult to dispute the charges. We were considering recommending this hotel for stop-overs to our company in the future, however, we had to rethink this considering the hotel offered nothing to remedy the situation and try to keep our future business. We have mixed feelings about this place because it’s a beautiful hotel, the food is quite good, and the staff is very friendly, but this oversight of theirs has proved to be very costly. We will not return unless they compensate us for the bad experience we had.

Dear Guest,
First i would like to thank you for staying at our lodge, it was a great pleasure hosting though we had not expected your visit. We are really sorry that by the time you checked in we only had the Family cottage available since the rest of the cottages were all fully booked. The Family cottage has a double room and a single room en-suite cottages so we chose for you a one section and gave the other to your driver since we had no alternative for him due to the fact that the booking was a abrupt. About the dinner arrangement, most of our guests prefer dinning with their drivers so that they share their safari experience and arrangement of the next day's itinerary so we thought you also preferred the same arrangement but next time we shall endeavor to ask before we do so. As a closing note, we thank you for your sincere feedback and promise you a memorable safari experience the next time you come to our lodge and please feel free to recommend us to your company.

Located next to George Lake with its with hippos, we really felt 'at one with nature' here! Large, comfortable bed and a shower with a stunning view. Shower does suddenly, unexpectedly vary with temperature at times. Nice balcony and staff were friendly and respectful. Swimming pool is on the small side and there is no fitness centre. Food was tasty at dinner and breakfast, though lunch was a bit average really. We had 3 major problems - (1) there were no big water bottles available while we were there; paying 3 dollars for a litre of water in small bottles is pricey (2) laundry prices are expensive (eg 5000 shillings for a vest, 3000 for a bra); (3) WiFi didn't work.

Dear Guest,
It was a great pleasure hosting you, first i would like to thank you for the positive review and for pointing our weaknesses which you witnessed during your stay. Am sorry that the WiFi failed to work on the day you were at the lodge and we rectified it immediately, we will also make sure we look into the lunch menu, the laundry pricing and the stocking of big mineral water bottles at the bar. We promise to give you a memorable experience the next time you come and please don't forget to recommend us to your friends.

We stayed for two nights the staff were magnificent and the accommodation brilliant. We had to forgo a trip on the second day due circumstances with one member of the party but the staff were absolutely wonderful and we were able to relax by the pool and get thoroughly spoilt by Lawrence and the rest of the staff. The room was beautiful with views over the lake, sitting on the balcony you could watch the fishermen and hear the hippos wallowing. The hippos came up to the lodge in the early hours of the morning, we heard them but unfortunately it was too dark to see them. At night you could watch the bats, fireflies and the stars. Large bath took ages to fill but using the shower hose speeds things up a tad and the water wasn't particularly hot, but what a luxury to soak in a bubble bath with a panoramic view over the lake.

I felt welcome from the moment of arrival, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The service of the waiters were excellent. All the meals were well presented, the food was wonderful. The lodge is
in a beautiful location, overlooking lake George. At night, there were hippos grazing on the lawn surrounding the chalets(so be careful !). I loved the interior design of the dining and lounge area. The chalet was spacious, clean and the bed was comfortable, you can relax in the bath while you look out over the lake. I can definitely recommend Ihamba and won't mind staying there again myself.

Room Tip: Chalets 1-3 face the lake

I stayed at the Ihamba Safari lodge for 2 nights and was extremely impressed with everything from the moment I arrived. The staff were very welcoming and provided an excellent service at meal times. The rooms are individual cottages which are beautifully furnished and feel very luxurious, yet authentic. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone looking to visit the Queen Elizabeth National Park.
