“Outstanding stay in one of France's most beautiful villages”
Reviewed 14 July 2013

Auberge du Sombral offers beautiful, spacious rooms with gloriously large bathrooms in the heart of Saint Cirq La Popie. The auberge is so attractive that we altered our itinerary to stay a second night. The village is somewhat off the beaten path and is tres charmant. Marion, the host at the auberge, was very gracious and accommodating. She flexed with our arrival time when we were delayed driving from Provence, gave us helpful tips about enjoying the village, and made excellent recommendations for our meal in their restaurant, which was one of the best on our two-week trip through France. Our only disappointment was that they close the restaurant on Thursday so we couldn't have a second meal on our way out of town.

Lovely old building with renovated rooms and good bathrooms. Staff were attentive and lent us a card for the first parking area up the hill so did not have to pay for parking. Park temporarily outside the hotel to unload then drive up to the parking area which is a steep climb especially with bags. Do not miss the patisserie just outside the car park. There is a sitting room downstairs where Wi Fi can be accessed.
Lapopie itself is a village on the side of a hill overlooking the river much as Rocamadour is but with a somewhat smaller number of tourists except on a busy day.

As the Auberge was booked for the night, we satisfied ourselves with a meal. Excellent quality all around. First time ever for lamb sweetbreads and kidneys and they were perfectly cooked. Great dressing on the salad and delicious fava bean soup amuse bouche.

Auberge du Sombral is a combination Inn and Restaurant located in the central square of Saint-Cirque-lapopie. The village is stunning and well worth an overnight to see it quiet and peaceful with only those staying nearby on the streets. It's great to park the car and know that you don't have to move it for the night-- we were able to wander all around, getting "lost" on the little lanes through town and dine at a fantastic restaurant a short walk back to the hotel. (The hotel's restaurant was closed the night we were there-- so we found an alternate which was very delicious).

The room was up a flight of stairs on the second floor. The hallway was a little dated looking, with big imposing fire doors, so I was concerned about the room-- but as soon as the door opened I was charmed. It was a small space but comfortable, well decorated and very clean, with a beautiful modern bathroom. The views out of the vine covered windows were charming and romantic. Breakfast was served downstairs in the restaurant which was relaxing and inviting -- we wanted to sit forever and look out onto the sleepy streets of the village. It was very delicious (traditional french pastry, coffee, etc).

My only concerns with the location was that we struggled to figure out how/where to park upon arrival. We had been told we could come down and drop off our stuff, but couldn't figure out how we would actually do that because of the old cobblestone pedestrian only streets. We needed to get a pass for the parking lot from the hotel before we could park, so it was a bit of a tight situation, I ended up leaving my husband in the car while I wandered through town, found the Auberge, got the parking ticket and ran back to him-- given the tiny roads it wasn't the easiest thing to backtrack, but it all worked out-- and was likely our fault more than anyone elses.

We stayed here for one night in April and were not disappointed. The bedroom was compact but comfortable - we had a view over the rear gardens. The en-suite shower room had recently been refurbished and was very good. The hotel is right in the centre of the large village and nowhere is more than 5 min walk away. You can park outside to unload your bags and the hotel then provides you with a 'pass' for free parking a few minutes walk away.
There are a number of restaurants and bars to choose from but we ate in the hotel. We had the four course menu for 28 euros which was very good.
The village is a fantastic medieval collection of buildings and alleyways and wandering around them was delightful.

We stayed at the Sombral on 16 Sep 2012 and it was perhaps the highlight of our three week visit in France. The Sombral is located right in the middle of this unique medieval village . . .it allows one to park the car nearby and walk everywhere in the village. The dining room is wonderfully warm and provides a relaxing space to enjoy the wonderful food presented by this family managed auberge (desert was a pear tart which was quite special). Our bedroom window was "decorated" with grape vine leaves and flowers (on the outside of the building) and looked out over a quaint, quiet village street. The Sombral has earned its high Michelin grades.

We had only one night here, but thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were warmly welcomed and parking arranged for our car. Our room was comfortable and clean. The highlight for us was the evening meal. We too had the set menu and it remains one of the highlight meals of our holiday in France.
