A beautiful historic house on lovely grounds with great views of Lake Seneca. We stayed 3 days midweek and enjoyed very personalized attention from Maria and John. They have taken a Victorian "summer cottage" keeping it's original character, while updating it to make it light and comfortable for today. Their advice on activities in the area was just right for us. Hoping to visit there again!

Room Tip: Lakeview rooms on the 3rd floor have wonderful views! The website gives a good feel for what each...

We stayed here for a long weekend trip and found the property to be beautiful, quiet and relaxing. Maria was a gracious host and we loved hearing stories and history about the property and village. The only feedback we have is that the breakfast was average.. Good enough but not gourmet, if that's what you're used to. The other downside is that it's not really walking distance to the village restaurants. However, if you're brave and in moderate health, you can walk up that hill. We did and it wasn't as bad as you'd think.

Overall? We'd stay again. The view and property itself were just wonderful.

Recently, my wife and I spent three lovely days at The Idlwilde Inn.
The room was superb and the owners and staff were competent and professional.
Each morning, our days started with an excellent breakfast.
The Watkins Glen area has a variety of interesting things to do (the many, many wineries, the racetrack, the Glass Museum in Corning, a fabulous "college town" in nearby Ithaca, etc.)
We have been staying at B & B's since the college days of our daughters (1990's) and the Idlwilde Inn is at the very top of our list.
The building and grounds are truly impressive!

Room Tip: Several rooms look out over Seneca Lake...we highly recommend one of these rooms.

We have stayed at B&Bs all over the world and this one is our favorite. Beautifully restored 1892 mansion and carriage house with 16 unique rooms. There is something for almost every budget. The majority of the rooms have their own bath. We stayed for 4 nights in Room 6, the master suite. Wow!!! A very large bedroom, a parlor, a sun porch, a walk-in closet and a private deck with a wonderful view of Seneca Lake and the hills. There were 2 fireplaces in our room and a 4 poster king bed. I am giving 4 stars for sleep quality because the bed was a little hard for my taste. Our friends were in Room 8, which was smaller but still good sized. They had really cool built-in cupboards and a dressing table (the room had originally been the daughter's room). The entire home was immaculate and the attention to detail was astounding. We were fortunate enough to see every room as we got there early. The innkeeper gave us a thorough tour and told us the history of the home. It was fascinating.

As to the innkeeper. Some people on this site did not seem to like her very much. We are at a loss to understand why. Maria was delightful. She was extremely helpful, eager to chat and full of good humor. Yes, there are rules. She explained to us that in the past she would often have rowdy guests (wedding parties, etc) and damage was done to the property. It is such a large property and she and her husband obviously take great pride in it, so I do not blame them for enforcing a few rules. The main one is no personal food or beverages in your room. But the porch is so large and welcoming it is no hassle to go out there if you want a drink.

The breakfasts were delicious and beautifully presented. I do wish there was a slightly larger time window, but it worked. They serve from 8-9 am. There was something different every day. Pancakes, French toast, biscuits and eggs and a blueberry-cream cheese casserole were the main courses on our 4 mornings. She accommodated my vegetarianism very well. There is also cereal and fruit as well.

The bottom line is this is not a place for partying or for children. It is a beautiful, classy place for adults who wish to enjoy peace and quiet, gorgeous surroundings and delightful hosts.

Room Tip: Room 6 is the best, followed by Room 10. Rooms 3,4 and 5 are in the former servants wing so they are...

After booking first and then looking at the reviews we were considering cancelling our reservations. The inn keeper isn't nearly as bad as some of these reviews would have you think. Maria was funny, friendly and very helpful with recommending things to do and wineries to visit. The house and the grounds are beautiful. We had a view of the lake from our room and the porch was wonderful to sit on, have a glass of wine and star gaze.

The not so great stuff:
There is a pamphlet in your rooms that tell you food can be consumed only on the porch; after seeing previous reviews we were not planning on pushing any boundaries though I did see a woman drinking wine in the living area and the next day she was walking around with a cup of coffee.
Breakfast is served at 8 am and it was good but nowhere near gourmet like other places we have stayed. I told them that I was a vegetarian when I made the reservations and had bacon on my plate the 1st morning and sausage the next. This was not a problem b/c my husband was very happy with 2 servings
We stayed in room 11 which shared a bathroom with another room- neither of us really had a problem with this though we both kept forgetting to take soap and a towel in to use to wash our hands after using the bathroom. This problem could be very easily remedied by putting a soap pump dispenser in the bathroom and providing some paper towels.
You only receive 2 very small cakes of soap and these were not replenished during our stay.
They do not wash the sheets every day and I don't have a problem with this but was surprised when we were gone all day to come back and our bed was not made.

The worst part: I usually sleep with more than one pillow. There were 4 pillows on the bed but 2 smelled like dirty pillows. We obviously didn't use them. The mattress was really hard and was uncomfortable to sleep on. This B&B was completely booked for the 2 nights we stayed, they certainly should be bringing in enough money to purchase more pillows and replace the ones that smell dirty.
We will probably not stay here again when returning to the Finger Lakes; we stayed at 2 other places and enjoyed those a lot better

They accomidated us coming at 9pm with understanding. Room 5 was small but we saved $ for 4 people and we had our own bathroom with plenty of warm water. The inn and grounds are very beautiful tranquil & picturesque. The porch is very large and relaxing. The breakfast wasnt super fancy but very tasty and the service was extremely fast. Maria was a delight and friendly. Many fun experiences and stories. She even let us keep our wine there after we checked out and came back for it. We would absolutely come back!! If you stay here you will not be disappointed! :)

My wife and I enjoyed the 3 nights and days that we stayed at Idlwilde Inn. A beautiful setting overlooking Seneca Lake with excellent breakfast. It was great to be in a facility without a TV or other forms of media, so we could like the great setting and conversation. We will stay again if we get the opportunity. Even though I marked the swimming pool as being excellent, the Inn does not have swimming pool. I could not find a way of deleting this ranking.
