“Great pousada and amazing breakfast!”
Reviewed 28 November 2011

We stayed at this pousada for 6 days. True the internet I made a reservation for 3 days, but after 1 night we already decided to book for 3 more days.

The pousada is situated at a quiet hill between beautiful jungle just 2 minutes from the center.
All the rooms are clean and neat with lovely few from your terras (with hammock)
They serve excellent breakfast.

My husband and I were on our 3-week South American honeymoon. We decided to visit the island of Morro de San Paulo just off the cost of Salvador de Bahia given the island's reviews. This was certainly the highlight of our visit to Salvador! We stayed three nights, but wish we could have stayed longer! Our breaths were taken away the beautiful rocks on the private side of the beach. This beach area was tranquil and we enjoyed a romantic walk along the beach...just the two of us with nobody else around. The walk from this pousada to the private side of the beach was short (about 5 min), but it was not paved and you had to walk carefully down a muddy, slippery and rocky hillside pass a quaint restaurant called One Love (named after Bob Marley). When it rains on the island the dirt path that passes in front of the pousada gets muddy. (We visited during Brazil's winter, so it rained briefly some afternoons and the island was not full of tourists. It was a trade off we appreciated as we got to explore the island without a million people crowding the beaches.) The environment was very organic and the owner that lives at the pousada is a real gentleman. Nice earthy surfer type guy who is always smiling.

This pousada is not located on the beach, but rather on a main street in the village. There are small markets on the street, so it was convenient to buy cheap bottled water and snacks. The breakfast at the pousada was very good and our room was quiet. We stayed at the very top floor and we recommend it because the view from the patio stares straight into lush green trees. The sound of birds was the only noise we heard. The room is not fancy (see photo below), but is clean. There is a small wall safe, a small 13 inch TV and DVD player (you can borrow movies from the front desk), a small fridge, and hot water in the shower. (Just be sure to ask how to use it as I mistakenly changed the settings.) Overall, for the price we paid the room was a good value.

The walk to the more touristy beaches was very short...again only 5 minutes. The stores on that side were much more expensive and there were a lot more tourists crowding the beaches. We really enjoyed staying where we did because we avoided the crowds and were in a central location to walk to all the popular beaches, as well as the more quiet private beach. We hope to return to Morro on day soon and when we do we plan on staying at this pousada again!

PS: When you arrive at the island you have to pay a small tourist visitor's tax. Also, given that there are no cars on the island, and all the roads are dirt, the locals offer a wheel-barrel carrying service. For a fee they will haul your luggage to your hotel/pousada. When you are departing just ask the front desk to call someone to haul it back. This service is worth the small fee as it hard to pull luggage on a dirt road and up the steep hill existing the port area. Also, this is who many local guys earn a living, so your participation helps fund the local economy.

Room Tip: Stay on the top floor so your balcony looks over into the lush green trees.

Jose received me with kindness and did anything to make me feel between friends. The rooms are big, cozzy and with magnificent views from their balcony: jungle, hill and colourful houses. You can try tropical fruit juices in the breakfast. The hotel is located near one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. To go to the most popular beaches, you have to make a nice 20' walk through the village.
Of note, the hotel has plenty of books and films on DVD. You can't be bored even if it rains

Room Tip: The best views are from the upper rooms, but you have to climb more stairs

This was overall one of the best places we stayed in our trip round Brazil and hands down the best value. Jose is a charming and helpful host, the rooms are specious and are equipped with all you need as well as having fantastic private terraces with hammocks overlooking the jungle. I would recommend this to anyone.

I hesiteted booking this posada as there were too few reviews of it in web. Now I can recommend it from any point of view: It is close to the main street but quiet and very picuresque standing on the steep hill. The only sound that can disturb you - the sound of fresh mango fruits falling on the ground just behind the door. The owner of pousada- Jose, makes everithing for you to feel like home. We talked much and he tald me also that he has his own waterwell so there is no fresh water shortage at Aquarela and the quality of water is better than other posadas use ( brought from outside of island). Beakfast choise is limited but quite enouhg to start a good morning. You always find a couple of garaffas of marvellous fresh juice there. I well never forget the evenings in Aquarela, lazing in hammok on balcony with a good cigar and a bottle of wine, gazinng at stars. It is not expensive, It is not 5 stars. It has no swimming pool, but you wouldn't even think about it on the island with so beautiful beaches and pristine sea. Wi-fi is free at reception ( ask Jose for password)

We luckily met Jose when we hopped off the boat from Salvador onto Morro, and we were really impressed with his Pousada. Delicious breakfast (charming French Chef), hammocks on every private balcony, quiet and well-kept. We really enjoyed this place and couldn't BELIEVE how inexpensive it was for such a nice place. It's also right on the way to Gamboa, so if you're into private-beaches that are a little off the beaten path (versus Beaches 1 - 4), then this is the ultimate location. You can take a 20-minute stroll along the beach on the way to Gamboa in the morning when the tide is low, stop by the clay springs, and enjoy the most beautiful beach on the island.
