“Get Away from It All”
Reviewed 3 March 2013

As we walked passed the 1st,2nd and 3rd beach each as beautiful as the other we were then ushered to the hotels awaiting mini bus and along the dirt track we went. For the 15 minutes or so it took to arrive at the Anima we thought we'd made a mistake - oh how wrong we were! Although there were two hotels near by it did indeed feel like our own private retreat. The beach at the foot of the hotel was deserted and in low tide you can walk into the sea for at least 800m without the sea passing your waist. it was nice to be able to visit the other beaches and the centre of town then get away from it all by returning to our hotel. There is a free shuttle service at specific times and if you want to go off schedule you can at a charge of R20 (cheaper than taxi rate). free wi-fi in public areas - pity it didn't reach the bungalows. There were few amenities in the bathroom just a few miniature bars of soap, rooms were small with little wadrope space. but we were just using this as a base to sleep, and the public areas, lounge and pool were large enough to relax in without really ever seeing many other guests. buffet style breakfast which varied slightly each day, nice and satisfying. Sightseeing trips can be organised by the hotel- we went snorkelling in the coral reef with a local fisherman for R30 each which was great. Massages can also be organised on site in a covered/shaded room close to the beach front - price was really cheap and the massage very good. We did like this hotel and location but just felt it lacked the luxury factor especially with regards to the room.

Spent 1 week with my husband and we had a very good time. It's a little bit far from the city and restaurants but you feel so good once you have arrived. Rooms are spacious and very confortable and the restaurant near the swmming pool is very good with Thai French food.
Can't wait to go back !

Being in our 50's we wanted peace and quiet for our 3 days at Morro de Sao Paulo after the frenetic travelling we had done during the preceding three weeks. We loved the Anima Hotel. We stayed in bungalow number 11, the newest one to be built, which we found delightful. The terrace with two hammocks was a nice touch and the very short walk to the public area of the hotel took us over a stream on the banks of which were cute little red crabs nearest the water and cream and blue further up the bank - they were fun to watch! The hotel is right on the beach and the music they place around the pool is very soft, mostly brasilian gentle sounds, unlike some of the other hotels which play throbbing disco music so that relaxation is out of the question. Angela and her staff are delightful, nothing is too much trouble and the food we found to be excellent. Because you are quite a way from the main village the hotel runs a courtesy car to the 'terminal' where the cars can go no further, and this is very regular, so if you want to go to find nightlife you can. However, we decided to stay and eat at the hotel on two nights and didn't find the food expensive as we thought it might be, so that was a pleasant surprise. Really enjoyed it and found the whole island a great experience.

Room Tip: our bungalow, number 11 was apparently the latest to be built. It had a large bedroom and bathroom...

Pros
-beautiful lobby area, reminiscent of southeast asian decor
-dinners were lovely and intimate
-food was reasonably priced, and good overall. Some dishes (fantastic moqueca, bobo) were better than others (dry chicken).
-staff was overall great, particularly at the restaurant - there is a waiter during the day that does this wonderfully creative thing with a lime. He converts part of a lime into a sun-like decoration that accompanies a caipirinha. I had to take it apart to figure out how he did it and I was very impressed with his making the extra effort.
-free shuttle to the village was definitely a plus, and we had no issues at all scheduling rides
-good selection of movies/magazines/books to keep you occupied
-cable tv was good, but not great as many channels were simply not available
-breakfast was delicious with a wide variety of choices
-rooms were well designed, with proper drywall which gave a really nice indoor environment. I found this atypical of other bungalows I've stayed in that offer less protection from the outside elements.

Cons
-hot tub was dirty upon arrival -- to be fair, it may be difficult to keep clean since it's outdoors, but it should have at least been cleaned before we got there
-there were way too many flies around food during the day -- this problem could have been alleviated by some insect-repellent lights or some other mechanism. While we can't blame the hotel for the flies, it would have been appreciated if someone at the hotel gave some explanation as to why there were so many. Perhaps it was the time of the year? Did something die nearby? Why am I defending my food from 10-15 flies everyday? I don't mind if a fly comes around every now and then, it happens, but these are aggressive flies that do not go away after you shoo them, they come back and they all attack at once. It was almost like a horror film foreshadowing something awful at this seemingly tranquil resort.
-there is a huge crack in the bathroom exit door in bungalow #1 when closed. I didn't think this would be a big problem when I first noticed it, but since the door leads to the outside, various types of critters sneak in at night and make an already-bad mosquito situation worse. Not to mention the lizards and spiders that also come in, making it pretty frightful at 3am when you want to go to the bathroom and you never know what other creatures will accompany you. Fortunately, the critters were pretty harmless and we did not see any tarantulas, fat poisonous centipedes or roaches -- that would have been unbearable.
-bricks were loose along the path to bungalow #1. My husband tripped and 2 bricks fell out, he could have very badly injured himself, but thankfully he didn't.
-Why no wireless internet in the rooms? I understand some people leave their laptops and whole lives behind on vacation, but I still have to do work every now and then. It gives me greater peace of mind to log in and at least check e-mails so I know what to expect when I get back to the office. Internet is really essential, and it would be great to manage this from my room.
-staff was great overall, as i had mentioned, but there was one member of the staff who was very polite in his communication to us but then in portuguese was less-than gracious. I would recommend that all staff be reminded that just because guests may not speak portuguese, does not mean that we don't understand any. It's pretty insulting to the intelligence of the guests, and shatters the paradise-like image the hotel has made great efforts to create.

Considering there are easy fixes to these cons, the pros are strong enough that I think it's fair to take away only 1 star and I would most definitely stay at the hotel again. You can tell a lot of work and effort went into making this place hospitable, especially in such a secluded area where it couldn't have been easy to transport materials and other commodities. ButI'd say if 98% of the job is done, why not do the extra 2% and fix the doors, bricks, etc.

Room Tip: Wouldn't recommend bungalow #1 unless you don't mind critters.

We (2 adults and 2 young children) arrived at the Anima and were enchanted straight away by the beauty of the surroundings! The beach is absolutely beautiful, very quiet, very clean, very authentic as it is the last beach before the mangrove. They also have natural diving pools at the front of the hotel that you can join by canoe or walk. The hotel itself is made of a bungalows, 11 in total and we had the first one on the beach which was very handy especially when you have children. The bungalow was clean, big bathroom, a very nice veranda and nets around your beds. They'd also have Sky Tv and access to plenty of DVDs free, perfect for kids. They also have room service if the kids are tired and you need to stay at home... The pool is lovely, the garden are very well kept, the food is amazing and the chef has to be one of the best ones we had since we arrived 6 weeks ago in Brazil. The Moqueca of Camarao, the sea food salad, the meat, the Bolinos and the Aipim fritto were the best we had! The manager was very charming and helped us to organise a few excursions. They have a free shuttle service 5 times a day to Morro so it is very easy to go to the village.
If you are looking for relaxation, beautiful ground, good food and a beautiful beach, then it is the place for you! We highly recommend it!

Delightful, comfortable bungalows set in shady gardens, with satellite TV and available DVDs, should you want them. The sounds of the surf, birds cries and humming birds darting about. Very friendly helpful staff, excellent food, an efficient free bus service into town. Lovely beach walks. Four days wasn't long enough.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 7 nights in October of 2011. We were looking for a relaxing beach vacation after Amazon trip, Rio, and Salvador.
This hotel is definitely relaxing. The bungalows and grounds are beautiful with amazing woodwork and two hammocks on the porch that we put to good use. And we spent a lot of time looking off the porch at the hundreds of crabs that make their little holes everywhere. Be aware that most of the bungalows either don't have a view of the beach or it is a very small one.
The lobby/pool area is beautiful and very well kept. They have a decent priced restaurant with great food and a lounge area with lots of games and books.
The only real negative was the water. It is beautiful but VERY, VERY shallow. Like can't even get your knees wet shallow.
Also, this hotel is quite far away from any of the life on the island. Makes it great for relaxing but if you want to get a drink or food away from the hotel you have to plan for it. The shuttle is a bit of a bumpy ride but they are good about providing it when they say they will.
We did have one day that we just started walking and walked all the way to town. It took over 2 hours.
I would recommend this hotel but only to those who are looking for a very quiet time and prefer the pool over the ocean for swimming.
