“Perfect end to our honeymoon in paradise!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 October 2013

This was the final part of our honeymoon in Brazil and we couldn't have asked for more. We stayed the first night in a luxury bungalow which was equipped with mosquito net and a jacuzzi in the room. The views from the bungalow were dreamy... We woke up looking into the sea and because the hotel is located on the most beautiful and reclusive beach of the island so it looked like we were truly in paradise. The restaurant was fantastic, service 5star, delicious cocktails (I recommend the coco loco) and the hotel even has a shuttle service that takes you into the busy touristic centre throughout the day and night (inc in the price). Couldn't have asked for more... This was one of the most beautiful and peaceful places we have ever stayed at and would definitely go back given the opportunity.

Room Tip: Only go for the luxury bungalows if you are bothered about having a sea view. The cheaper bungalows...

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 September 2013

We just spent 5 nights at Vila Dos Orixas at the end of our honeymoon trip to Brazil. We were looking forward to some chill out time after having visited Rio and the jungle, and the hotel was the best place to do this. It's in a great setting on the Praia do Encanto which is away from the town of Morro de Sao Paulo - so if you're expecting bustling nightlife and a busy beach this is not the place for you! However it was exactly what we were hoping for; although there are a few bungalows it never feels crowded, we had caiprinhas on sunloungers looking out onto the beach every day, and the pool is beautifully set among the palm trees. It felt like we were in a world of our own! Our sea view bungalow was spacious and clean and we loved the jacuzzi in the lounge.

Morro de Sao Paulo and the first and second beaches are pretty touristy so we were pleased to have the option to go there when we wanted but be staying away from the hustle. The tide was out in the morning and evenings so there is an expanse of beach and the water is shallow in front of the hotel. It meant we could walk up to Morro de Sao Paulo late in the afternoon, a lovely 2 hour stroll followed by drinks on the second beach, then we took the car back organised by the hotel. They have a number of time slots where you can book space in the car to take you either up to, or back from the town up until 11:30pm which was great for us. We had dinner one night in Morro de Sao Paolo and also once next door at the Anima hotel, but to be honest we thought the food at Vila Dos Orixas was the best so we ate there the rest of the time. It's the only place we found in Brazil that serves an appetiser before the meal, which as food lovers we thought was a nice touch! The moquecas were amazing, and the breakfast selection was good as were lunch snack options.

The staff were generally really helpful and although some don't speak English tried their best to help us with our queries. The owners were lovely and obviously care a lot about providing the best expereince for their guests. My husband went diving one day which reception organised for us by calling the dive company on the island and sorting out transport (horse and cart!). We also had massages on our terrace on our last day which was the perfect end to the relaxing part of our trip. If you're looking for an unspoiled beach, great accommodation, well-made caiprinhas with good food and privacy, this is the place for you.

We stayed at Vila dos Orixas in 2008, but have been dreaming about it ever since! We started talking about it again recently and remembered we never reviewed it, so here goes:
We spent about 5 nights, in low season and it was unbelievable! Because it was late May, for a few nights we were the only people in the resort and the other times we shared it with one other couple. It really felt incredible. The location is superb, in a coconut grove with a beautiful secluded beach and an amazing pool. The cabin was perfect, beautifully furnished, great bed and linens, amazing tub and beautiful hammocks on the porch.
The staff were also excellent. The owners were very friendly and we happened to lose our room key (twice, it fell from my husband's pocket when crossing a small wooden bridge) and they were so gracious about it (most other high end hotels charge ridiculous prices to replace a lost key!)
The restaurant was also quite nice. The breakfasts were good and even though my husband was vegetarian, they accommodated that for breakfast and at dinner, they would make him a different delicious creation every time!
It is a good 20-30 mins from town (not sure if the rickety van is still being used.....that's the only drawback), but we didn't feel the need to go into town much.....it is a perfect romantic location, peaceful and relaxing and absolutely beautiful. We took a boat trip, but the operators knew the hotel and they picked us up from the hotel.
We have stayed at many high end hotels , but truly this was the best experience we ever had! I realise part of that had to do with the fact that in low season and it felt like our own private resort, but I cannot imagine how you could go wrong with choosing this place.
Thanks Vila dos Orixas and we would love to be back one day!

+nice secluded and private place!
+free transport to other side of island
+nice pool and relaxed beach
+hot tub in rooms
-no view of sunset in the sea (as the sun sets on the island side)
-service is very good, except for one employee (so I don't feel it is fair to judge the place on this one person)...

Room Tip: Rooms near the beach or pool are best

Idilic dump, far from any crowds and far from any service. Nothing seemed to work in the room not the tv, internet, toilet or electricity. We went to eat diner while they fixed things. Diner was atrocious. Avoid the property unless your on a diet and enjoy solitude.

Dear Guest,

We feel very sorry for your stay was not as pleasure as we liked.

A few considerations about your review and stay:

The Internet WiFi and the TV was working. We gave you the password for the WiFi and the instructions for the TV controller several times.

The electricity was working, as we told you, but you should put the magnetic card next to the door to turn on the energy on your room.

About the tittle of your review, trapped, we consider that all this information is on our web site as well as in so many sites on the net, as tripadvisor, and the final choice was yours. Also, we provide our guests who want to visit the town with a free transfer.

About the food: As soon you complain about one dish served, we offer you the possibility to change it for another one but you refused it and ate the one you already had. We would like to say that the plate went back completely empty.

In case you would like to give us another chance to improve your impression about us, we will be very glad to receive you again.

We had planned this trip for very long time... to go to Brasil and not to spend all of our time in big cities but to find a hidden paradise and we found-it in Morro de Sao Paulo but very far from being perfect... and it is unfortunate because it has the potential to be a hidden paradise... the problems:
-To arrive was a big headache because is far away from Salvador and the tourist office this hotel used was useless and they only communicate in Portuguese and broken Spanish... or they send you mails in English but are just generic emails without answering any specific concerns regarding the transfer from Salvador / For Hotel; "Please get a better Tourist Agency Partner"
-Maintenance of the pool - it must be done more often the cleaning and the maintenance specially since this hotel is located in an area where the sea tide makes that the ocean disappears and you can't swim.. so you want this time to spend-it in a nice pool; but many times it wasn't cleaned, no server at the bar, slow service, water in the pool is most of the time is turbid
-The restaurant could have a greater choice and to offer daily specials for guests like us who wanted to eat at all times in the hotel but after 3 days we knew the menu by heart and we were surprised there weren't offered specials daily or bread on the service... we were told "here in Brasil is not custom to eat bread with the food"... well is not custom in Brasil but if you want to offer your services to the International clientele you must follow international standards!!
-The rooms need to be better maintained... rooms are nice (not Maldives nice... but Brasil nice) and if they would maintained better would have a better feel as the bases are there but when you have to move your bed in the middle of the night because the rain is pouring through the roof then there is a problem!!!
-The local staff is very laid back and they don't speak or speak very little english
-The choices on the menu at the small bar of the beach was very limited and the server was always hard to find him.... he never went to the beach to offer anything... we always had to go to them... if he would have come to us... we would have spend three times more... but I guess they don't care about their revenue.

The Good things;
-Very isolated as we were looking for but if you want to go to the town - they offer a free shuttle subject to an schedule... so you always have the choice of going to town
-Breakfast was delicious, great variety and fresh
-Food was generally ok, fresh and with flavour... the Chef (a new guy) tried to please some dietary conditions our group had ... but still I believe food here has the potential to be AWESOME!
-The foreign staff and management was very attentive to every comment and tried to find solutions to our troubles... this is GREAT... but better if troubles would be there ;)
-Loved the showers in the rooms... water with very good pressure and right temperature always
-Daily cleaning of rooms was excellent
-The amenities on the room (soap, shampoo etc) are great quality.

So Overall this is a place with great potential to be a DIAMOND... now is on the rough and they ry to do their best when you speak to the management - but who wants to spend their vacation speaking to Managers of hotels?

The bungalows are beautiful - we enjoyed the hot tub and the use of the fridge. the hot water was a bit spotty at times!
The grounds are gorgeous and well kept with a really nice pool.
The staff is quite helpful. Breakfast was delicious - great fruit, breads, coffee, juice. Wi-fi was handy!
The remote area is beautiful with awesome beaches (once we understood the flow of the tides), wildlife (monkeys, crabs, horses). We did the snorkel tour with Ronaldo, a local, which they set up for us. It was fun!

Other Tips -
Once you arrive in morro, get a "taxi" to haul your luggage to the tourism area. They have wi-fi and can call the hotel manager. They come with a Land Rover every few hours. We had to wait around 45 minutes. THen, you drive in the land rover in the backcountry for around 25 minutes.

Though we loved the nature of the property and the beaches, be aware that you are quite a distance from shops and restaurants on beach 2. Also, the beach (Praia do Encanto) is not wide and sandy and pleasant to stroll on like beach 2. If you like a bit more nightlife and activity, I would recommend beach 2 or 3.

To get to beach 2, you can: take the land rover when they leave (sign in and out at front desk), walk, rent a taxi, or get the horse and buggy that takes you on the beach all the way to the edge of beach 3 and 4 (we did this once and loved it)

Beware of mosquitoes! We brought repellent and the hotel does a lot of things to prevent (sprays, nets, etc.) but it is still a problem.

Room Tip: I would not see the need for the largest rooms with the upstairs bed. It is hotter up there in the l...
