La Gomerie
Ranked #13 of 24 Saint-Emilion B&B and Inns

This place was a pleasant surprise, given there was not a substantial amount on information on trip adviser or their website (http://www.mf-favard.fr/).

Quick note on access - Firstly as previously noted, the place is actually called "Château Meylet".There is a sign on D243 to a place called "Château La Gomerie" - which is NOT this place. See my photographs to give a heads up on what to look out for to get the right entry to the property.

Other important note - YOU MUST PAY IN CASH.

The room we stayed in was pleasant - relatively small and basic, and had a small but clean bathroom with decent fittings, small TV, and heating. Beware for summer stays that there is no air-conditioning. The outlook was great - over the vineyards (see photo).

Breakfast was basic but nice - breads, croissants, yoghurt, etc., but no cereal. There was no WiFi/Internet at the time we were there (it appears they are having ongoing problems with their connection). The owner and other staff were very friendly and spoke a reasonable amount of English.

It is about a 20min walk into the centre of Saint Emilion. If you take the direct route via D243, it can be frustrating to find somewhere to walk as the road is reasonably busy, has no shoulder, and there is a drainage ditch that you must jump across between road edge and the adjacent vineyard. There is also limited to no shade, so it is quite hot to make the trek in summer. There is a back route was through the vineyards and secondary roads you can take - ask the tourist office for their hike maps, on which one of them details the route (the reverse of part of one of the walks).

If you do not want to walk in and don't intend to drive, be aware that there appears to be very limited amounts of taxis in Saint Emilion (when we were there, there was none). You may need to get a taxi in from nearby Libourne, makes the 2km trip very, very expensive (maybe 20 euors). There appears to be a bus, but the timetable was very limited.

We had a very pleasant stay and would recommend this place!

I agree with the previous reviewer about the confusion over the name. I found three 'names' for La Gomerie. Obviously La Gomerie, which is the address,, Meylet, which is the chateau name and in a French guide, they called it by the name of the owner, which was something like 'Fumer'. Very confusing. Very nice room and ensuite, very near St Emilion. Breakfast very basic. Madame seemed a bit grumpy but was quite helpful. Also there were bikes which you could borrow, which was nice. Quite a pleasant outdoor space but maybe as it was coming to the end of the season, the garden was overgrown and loungers a bit dirty.

We stayed here for 4 nights during a recent 3 week trip in SW France. While you'll miss the turn-off into the property if you blink on the road approaching St Emilion, once you are inside you'll like the spacious and quiet rooms overlooking vineyards. About 2 km from the town itself, Chateau Meylet is a great base for exploring the town or the surrounding countryside. Breakfast is classically French - coffee, juice, baguettes and jam/honey/butter - and is eaten in a nice dining area on the main floor. Our upstairs bedroom was quite large and had a small but functional private bath. The stairs are narrow and twisty, so it is hard with suitcases. There are main floor rooms as well, and one should ask when making the reservation where the room will be located if this is an issue.

Madame Favard is helpful but not intrusive, so you'll have to track her down if you want to talk with her. If you stay for a longer period, she will run your laundry for you and you can dry it or hang it outside in the sunshine. Lovely little tables and chairs dot the property, so we had picnic lunches outside on several days.

I speak good French, and was able to communicate quite well, but I can't say whether English is spoken by Madame or her assistants. We enjoyed our stay here.

Room Tip: Ask about main floor rooms if narrow windy stairs will be a problem for you!

First off the place is called Chateu Meylet and is in La Gomerie region of Saint Emilion, thus is incorrectly listed in Tripadvisor making it hard to find information about it or write a review about it.

Chateau Meylet is a small family run hotel in an old historic building about 1/2 mile outside St. Emilion, very comfortable, quiet, nice rooms, clean, beautiful garden in which we enjoyed breakfast every morning and a picnic dinner one evening.

The proprietor, Madame Favard, made us quite comfortable. I want to mention that because of several fountains and birdfeeders in the garden this is a great place if you are interested in birdwatching.

It is not a fancy property but is very comfortable and is a great value.
