“Inside is fine, outside is messy”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2012

Pro: Great value for the area. Once inside, reception and rooms were very clean ( Ibis modern), and nice breakfast buffet. Friendly staff.

Con: Hard to find, be prepared to turn into obscure driveway very fast. Outside area of the hotel was very messy - trash cans overflowing, unmown lawn, weeds everywhere. If we hadn't already made a reservation, we would have not even bothered to go in, it was so derelict looking.

Staff rude and unhelpful. Restaurant and pool out of commission. Ejected from hotel at 10.30 at night because plumbing had broken down and there was no water.

No compensation or even apology offered.

DO NOT STAY HERE AT ANY COST !!!!!

Room Tip: There isn't one.

We arrived to a great reception from the manager who couldn't do enough for us during our stay. Enjoyed the pool which with the price was good value. However the hotel is in need of an upgrade - there is mould in the bathrooms, a smokey smell in the rooms and generally the decor in the rooms is tired. The shower has no curtain so the bathroom floor gets soaked. If the manager had not been so nice this would have scored lower. This could be a great hotel as its so close to St Emilion.

After reading the reviews on trip advisor, I was not very optimistic about staying in this hotel, but I need not have been. The welcome was warm and courteous, and although I found it a bit strange to be given the TV controller at reception, nothing was too much trouble. The room was compact, but spotless with everything in working order. The meal we had in their Relais was all that we could expect, and before we left the next morning, an excellent breakfast, and all this for €42 for 2 persons. Highly recommended.

Let me just preface this by saying that St. Emilion is beautiful--great town, beautiful countryside, good wine. So, for the good of your vacation here, do NOT make the mistake of selecting this hotel.

We had booked through Expedia. When we arrived we were told that there was no room available for us. When we expressed our complete bewilderment, we were told that several of their rooms had flooded and were uninhabitable--but they had not bothered to tell expedia. Instead they took it upon themselves to book us into a "nice hotel just 2 minutes down the road." Well, after driving around for 2 hours and not finding this phantom hotel we went back and were then told, "well, it may be more like 5 minutes, and you have to drive through Libourne and turn into the industrial neighborhood." For the record, don't go to Libourne. When we asked for a map we were told they did not have one; instead we got a drawing that, once again, did not represent reality. We finally stopped in a McDonald's to get directions to the hotel, which ended up being basically your run-of-the-mill roadside motel 6, 30 minutes from the Bonsai and nowhere near where we wanted to be.

When we went back to the hotel to complain and try to get our money back, we were told (after waiting 10 minutes for the manager to finish his cigarette) that it was not their problem and to deal with Expedia. They refused to take responsibility or provide any retribution, despite booking us into a hotel with a published rate half of what we paid to "stay" in the Bonsai.

While I can't comment on the rooms, I can say that this hotel has a lot to learn about the hospitality business. I'd never felt so insulted and let down by a hotel experience, and I travel a lot. Stay away!
