“An OK stay in a lovely town”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2013

We have visitd St Emilion several times but this is the first time we have stayed overnight (well 3 nights actually) in the town. From previous visits for refreshments we knew the hotel is a little dated, however the facilities are fairly good. It is in a good location at the top of the town close to a large open car park and the hoteloffers fairly secure parking at 15 euros a day of whichwe availed. I say fairly secure since on a couple of times the secure door broke and so was left open. We were disappointed that the hotel bar was only open during one evening of our 3 night stay making it feel a little characterltess, especially since we didn't want to spend too much time in our small room. Our room was a corner room which was almost illed by the bed, which overlooked the car park and the main road and had a small funtional bathroom with the worlds smallest bath with hand held shower. The room was adequate for our stay, albeit lacking the wow factor, however in fairness we had reserved the lowest category of room and so it met our expectations. We slept quite well since the room was very quiet despite being on the main road. I was woken every morning by the delightful smell of breakfast being prepared in the kitchen which must have been below our room, lovely smelling baked goods. We didn't actually take breakfast in the room since we preferred to have a light breakfast in the town at a fraction of the price (it wasn't included in our room rate. Staff were always pleasant and courteous when available.

Room Tip: Basic rooms are very small and don't have air conditioning - you might find the superior rooms m...

We have experienced the worst holiday due to the "chief receptionist" of being rude. They scream at you, this destroy everything.

Bordeaux is amazing and the hotel is a great location.

I would strongly recommend a change of "management" will help!

Our second stay at Hotel Palais Cardinal, and once again our trip has exceeded our expectations, the staff have a relaxed and efficient manor about them and in no way intrusive whilst going about the running of the hotel.

This was the first time we experienced the hospitality of the restaurant, a massive bonus to our stay, the quality, the standard and value for money of food in the restaurant was superb; also factoring in the reputation of many establishments in and around st Emillion is extremely high and hence very competitive, a big well done to Daniel and this team keep the good work up.

I have to say I enjoyed tasting the wines of the house "Chateau Sarpe", very tasty and again value for money.

The rooms are exceptionally good value considering location and size, very please the room had air con. A major benefit is the secured locked car park, very important if you are carrying valuable wines with you.

Lovely pool, superb sunbathing area very private and discrete, big thumbs up.

We certainly shall be returning again. A big well done and thank you to Jean Luc, Daniel, Charmaine and Emily for making us feel so welcome. See you again next year.

We were here two nights and were glad it wasn't longer. The room was ok, slightly dated and more noticeably so in the bathroom. Breakfast was also ok, basically a limited continental selection. The cleaner tried her best to help when the receptionist had vanished. That was the limit of the plus points though.

Our rate included dinner but the menu, dining room and clientele looked like refugees from Fawlty Towers so going anywhere else felt like a much better option. There was no minibar in the room and when we asked for a bucket of ice we were told we couldn't have any. Throughout there was a stunning lack of care or concern from reception, on the occasion when there was even anyone there. We won't be going back.

(Incidentally, there is a way to exit the garage from inside - there is a code pad a couple of metres inside the main door to the left as you face the exit. Just don't stand in front of the floor level sensor as you use the pad or it won't open. Thats the sort of thing reception didn't think to mention, nor warn us that the handle was broken on the rear door.)

This hotel offered us a perfect holiday setting for exploring St Emilion and the surrounding wine regions. We opted for a larger and pricier room and felt is was good value. Unfortunately for us, the weather turned a bit cool, so we did not use the pool as much as we had hoped, but the setting was wonderful. We were also close to everything, including a free parking lot, a bakery for morning croissants, and a little market for poolside picnic supplies. The room was nicely appointed and roomy. The service was good, especially the young Austrian intern and Charmaine. The young man lent us his own umbrella on a rainy day, and offered to decant a special bottle of wine for us. Charmaine helped us find our way to the to hotel on our first night as we had no map, no gps, and after 8 hours in the car, were driving on back roads and were exhausted. Her friendly voice on the phone gave us hope as she kept calling to check in on us. Thanks to both of them for the great service.

I've stayed here a few times over the last ten years on work and holiday trips. The latest stay was with my wife and for a few days of vacation. I find the Cardinal to be an exception value for its location. If you want a/c, luxury, non-velvet wallpaper, and a lift, then pay another 100€ and stay at one of the 4 or 5 stars in town. If you want to stay at a French hotel, with a pool, with friendly staff (I like Maria, she is hilarious), on the edge of town, with a crazy old wall overlooking impeccable vines, then stay here.

Room Tip: the best room is the one with the balcony that is attached to the poolside terrace.

Right on the edge of town, so no issues with navigating side streets and traffic restrictions (and has a large garage). Room was large, but could do with an upgrade, e.g. it has a handheld shower that looked as though it was from 1970. The female staff were great, but the gentleman was a little too comical and acted as though every request was a major imposition. Pool looked fantastic but we didn't have time to try it.
We didn't use the restaurant. Breakfast was disappointing compared to all the others we'd had in France, recommend you go elsewhere, but note that nothing else was open at 8am.
