This is my second trip on this train, which has been operating with various steam and diesel engines down the years. If you like a touch of nostalgia, vintage carriages, a trundle alongside an estuary between Paimpol and Pontrieux then this trip may be for you. It isn't a cheap trip, but the views are worth it - and a big plus for steam engine fans is that you may be as lucky as I was to climb up onto the footplate to see the mysterious workings of the engine!

If you use a wheelchair or have difficulty walking then the train may not be suitable as it has no adaptations, and the stop for a crepe and a cider at the halfway point is down an embankment with some steep steps, which you have to climb back up again afterwards.

Pontrieux is a pretty riverside place to stop for lunch before the return journey. This short video gives you an idea of some of the things you will see on your journey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ane4VUQ48sE. Enjoy the day if you decide to go.

on a recent visit to the pink granite coast we decided to go back in time on the steam train that ran from Paimpol to Pontrieux, a journey of about an hour - the carriages were comfortable & the journey was enhanced by an excellent and informative commentary in english & french by the train's hôtesse - there was a 30 min stop on our way south at a station where local specialities, cidre et crêpes were served - arriving in Ponttrieux we were given the option of travelling by calèche into the pretty village - many shops & restos & interesting sites, including a barge trip to see the unique lavoirs lining the river's banks ( 50 in total ) - after about three hours we returned ( by caleche ) to the station for thev return trip to Paimpol through splendid scenery - in all a great day out!!!

Excellent. Really enjoyed, although weather was a bit of a let down. Horse and cart takes you from the station into the town of Pontrieux, and had a good lunch in Pontrieux.

Reviewed this trip last year when a diesel was pulling the carriages. This year to steam train is back. At the halfway halt the engine driver will let the fit people clamber into the cab for photos.
Took my own advice and bought items for a pique nique in the park that runs along side the river.
Take the horse drawn carriage from the station to the town centre. Saves a long walk and adds to the day out.

We had already done the conventional train ride from Pontrieux to Paimpol which took about 20 minutes but decided to do it again in a slower and more interesting fashion on the old steam train. It gives you more time to view the scenery alongside the Trieux estuary and takes you back in time. Our hotel reserved the tickets for us which are a bit pricey at 23.50 euros each return, but I am sure it costs a lot of money to keep the old engine on the rails, and we considered it value for money.

We went on a day when a lady in colourful period costume was giving a musical accompaniment and we had a 30 minute stop at an old country house by the river which had been the home of a gentleman associated with a famous French murder mystery of the past. Crepes and cider were served whilst an explanation (in French only) was given about this tale of intrigue. We were able to ask one of the helpful costumed train attendants about what it was all about. The commentary on board the train was in French and English and was very informative.

During our stop over in Pontrieux we had a good look around this attractive historical village with all its colourfully decorated 'lavoirs' on the river side, which you can see from the little bridge. We had a light lunch at a waterside restaurant but I would recommend that if you have limited time and the weather is good, that you buy a picnic and have it in the park by the river where there are plenty of seats. This gives you more time for sightseeing.

Also it's worth noting that you can choose to return at a later time than that indicated on the timetable, which gives more time in Pontrieux, so long as there's space on the train and you ask beforehand. We did wonder about returning on the conventional train but the single fare on the steam train is not a lot cheaper than the return fare, so we decided against it. No halfway stop was made on our trip so it was a lot faster anyway.

We chose the more modern (1930s?) German made carriages with padded seats. The older, carriages have the original wooden seats, but we went for comfort!
