We stayed here for 11 nights and had a fantastic time. Afroditi is an amazing host, who goes out of her way to ensure you have the best holiday possible. The day after arrival she sat down with us on the balcony with the map and gave us ideas of places to visit, best beaches and restaurants, all of which made our stay that little bit extra special.
The apartment is cleaned to a very high standard, the bed linen and towels are changed every other day and are of high quality. The bed was also one of the most comfortable hotel beds we have slept in. The sun beds around the pool are wooden with comfortable padded matrices on them and whilst we were there the pool area was empty most days, there are only 7 apartments and most people were out and about so were just using it towards the end of the day. We took wine up to the pool and it felt like it was our own private pool!
The apartments do not get the afternoon sun, but the pool is in the sun all day. There are 2 apartments that have sea views, they also face the road. We had the middle floor with sea views and although you also faced the road it was nice to look out to the sea or harbour. You could also see the sea from the bed, which was lovely in the mornings. If you do not want to face the road there is a lovely 'garden' apartment which is off the road to the side.
Agia Efimia is very pretty, especially at night when the boats are in and all lit up. The apartments are about 2 minutes walk to the village and all of the restaurants. There are 2 lovely bakeries in the village for you to get your breakfast rolls or croissants and also 3 small supermarkets. There are around 7 or 8 restaurants overlooking the harbour and 3 or 4 bars. We were surprised at how reasonable the restaurants and bars were, only €2 for a large beer, €3 for a cocktail and the average meal was around €8. You could get a lunch deal with something like a prawn or greek salad or chicken pita and a small beer for only €4. A couple of evenings when we had had a large lunch, we shared a huge seafood platter for 2, which came with 2 large glasses of wine and that was €14.
One of the things we loved about the location of the apartments was that it was in the centre of the island which meant that you could travel to anywhere on the island in around 45 minutes. There are 2 really nice beaches within 15 minutes drive, one being Myrtos Beach which is in the top 20 best beaches in Europe and also Antisamos Beach with free loungers and sun umbrellas. The beaches in Kefalonia are mainly shingle or pebbles so don’t expect fine sand. We actually spent most of our time on the small coves which are dotted along the coast just outside the Agia Afimia, there are probably around a dozen small coves along the road, accessible by steps cut into the rocks. They are beautiful and in our opinion much nicer than the large beaches. We went most days and found a cove which we had to ourselves all day, we took lunch and just chilled. If you ask Afroditi she will give you a beach umbrella and roll up mattresses to use whilst you are on the beach. We kept ours in the car and gave them back at the end of the holiday.
Kefalonia was the Greece we remembered from 25 years ago, the people were friendly, there were no night clubs, no large groups of teenager’s sight and it was not over touristy. One thing that did surprise us was that most of the tourists on the island seemed to be English. The only time we came across other nationalities was when the cruise ships came in, other than that it was mostly English couples or families with small children.
If you are looking for a peaceful relaxing holiday, with restaurants selling good simple food, and boutique style accommodation with a host that goes out of her way to please, then you will not be disappointed by the Greka Apartments.
Thank you Afroditi for making our holiday so memorable.
