Phoenician steps - 800 steps down from Anacapri - starting from the Villa San Michelle entrance and down to the port. It is a big drop with good views but very hot work during the day in late July depending on breeze and time of day – we did at 11:30am and it was damn hot – going up would be madness! Probably better than a cramped hot bus - but don't do it during the hottest part of the day without loads of water.

If you've experienced the horrendously crowded, tiny buses on Capri, you'll know why people make the effort to use the steps.

The views from the top are naturally outstanding and the walk down from Anacapri is about 20-25 minutes. Walking up, we took only 30 minutes compared to the signposted 70, so that probably puts lots off people off, unfortunately.

Other than arriving and departing Anacapri, we always used the steps and saved our bus money for the Anacapri-Capri road, which was genuinely dangerous to walk on. Once was enough for that.

Prior to our visit to Capri, we read the TA posts re Scala Fenicia. Having walked many steps, I must say that the steps were not as irregular as I expected from several of the reviews. In fact, the steps were quite even. The view for sure is spectacular. There will not be many people on the stairs so one does not feel rushed or outpaced. Take your time and enjoy history underfoot. The path to the Port of Capri is clearly marked and will you not regret your decision to depart Anacapri this way. Walking up will be a different story. Still doable, but the 200m climb is for those who have done something similar previously.

More than 750 stone steps cut into the side of the cliffs, so do you blame us? Great views across the bay of Naples to Vesuvius.

It's good for your calf muscles! And somehow the fact we managed to get from Anacapri to the Port under our own steam both felt like a real achievement and added to our feeling about how approachable this Island is. Be careful in wet weather.
