Lovely setting in a mansion looking out to the port of Capri. The gardens are well cared for and you wind around to vistas, floral arrays, bookstore. the exit to the village is lined with tourist shops for every taste.

This is a must see while in Capri. The home, gardens and especially the view are all amazing to see.
I recommend setting time aside to make a visit here.

If you are in Capri on a day trip, this villa is well worth putting on your list of things to see. You must take the bus to Anacapri and walk about a half mile to the villa. The architecture and the furniture are rustic. What makes this place special are the gardens and the views. However, the interior furniture and art work are a fascinating view into the life of its owner Axel Munthe.

On our first morning staying in Anacapri we visited Villa San Michele. A lovely villa in beautiful gardens. We were there quite early and it wasn’t at all crowded. The views from some of the terraces were just amazing. We walked around in an hour or so. There is a small cafe where you can have drinks or lunch but we didn’t try it. A must visit on Capri.

The eight euros paid at entrance worth the price? At first you walk through several rooms, even the kitchen, his study and few other rooms. You can describe this walk as “unremarkable.” There are, though, house treasures, paintings and artifacts that makes you feel that Axel Munthe still lives there.

There is one room dedicated in telling his story. Come prepared to read. As a doctor and psychiatrist from Sweden, he came to love Capri at the end of the 1800’s. He purchased the villa and remolded the entire place.

Axel loved animals. He had dogs, birds and even a pet baboon. A sanctuary on the island he developed still exists.

With his Capri experiences, he published a book in 1929, “The Story of San Michele.” The work became quite popular and eventually translated into 45 languages. Understanding his history, helped to view why this villa is so famous.

He had a number of famous guests. One of who was the famous American author Henry James who wrote that Villa San Michele is “a creation of the most fantastic beauty…”

The villa does sit 327 meters—about a 1000 feet—above sea level. The village of Capri can be seen as well as the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. You can actually see these views without walking into the villa by continuing the trail around the villa.

There is a picturesque garden inside. A rather inviting Café is on an upper floor with gorgeous views too. My wife did have to wait for a bathroom as there was a line.

Today, the Villa is operated by a Swedish foundation. Your monies paid helps to preserve the villa and the stories behind these walls.
