Hotel San Michele
Ranked #15 of 18 Hotels in Anacapri
Reviewed 28 June 2013

You cannot really go wrong with Anacapri and the hotel san Michele has the immediate advantage of being amazingly situated looking back to Naples and Versuvius. It also looks around and down to the Marina Grande. The hotel opposite is probably even better placed but anyway.... Straightaway one can see that it was probably a magnificent hotel in the late 70s but unfortunately nothing much has happened since; a characteristic I have seen in other hotels that do not feel that they have to try very hard because we grockels will come anyway. The lobby is all marble and seventies chic; the rooms are fine and we had the balcony facing out to see, which has absolutely no privacy but guess that is ok in Italy. Bathroom was on the small side and required a bit of maneuvering to get one into the bath/shower. The plus is that it has a huge pool, which makes it excellent of you have children along. We only had breakfast, which was very unimaginative but then I do not thinks Italians really do brekkie. The wifi was atrocious, which is pretty inexcusable in this day and age but at least it was free.

I stayed here for 2 nights at the beginning of June. As a single traveller I booked a single room, it was small, very small and the bathroom even smaller! But it was fine for me. It is an older property but has character that chain hotels lack. The staff are friendly and helpful and speak good English. The room was very clean and had a terrace that overlooked the pool. Breakfast is Italian Continental. The bus from Capri Town stops up the road and Anacapri is not as busy as Capri town, lovely for an evening wander. The hotel car dropped me down at the port for my ferry to Ishchia on my last day. Capri is expensive so I guess you have to look at things in proportion. Would stay there again and recommend. Think charging 6 euro for lounger by pool and 1 euro for a towel by pool is a bit cheeky, but you can have deckchair for free.

Room Tip: Overlooking pool.

My husband and i only stayed at the San Michele for one night, the hotel has a lovely view and is surrounded by a beautiful garden, there is also a bus stop right outside the hotel so there is no need to catch a taxi from Capri. Its also a short walk into Anacapri which is very convenient and a short bus ride to Capri. The hotel is much older and was probably our least favorite hotel during our time in Italy, the room was a good size and it was clean, we had a little balcony which was very nice but the decor has definitely seen better days. The staff were helpful but not overly friendly.

The great things: professional and helpful staff, wonderful location, great views from the breakfast hall, the lobby is beautifully decorated. The bad things: the room and breakfast were just correct (the room had rusty hooks by the entrance etc, it could very well do with a renovation; breakfast had a somewhat limited selection, some of the cakes were nice though).

Given the prices in Capri, it is too expensive. I had not looked around for other hotels as we were attending a wedding, but I am pretty sure you could find something with better value.

On the plus side the hotel is in an elevated position and has fantastic views over the bay of Naples. Common areas are classic with supurb marble floors and antique furniture. I could sit in the dinningroom/ sun terrace all day and take in the view. Extremelly helpful staff and management, very convenient for Anacapri which is only a short walk. thereis also a large outside swimming pool. Only had B&B so cant comment on the food other than breakfast which was average. On the downside traffic noise may be a problem particularly at the front. The back rooms should be quieter. Rooms are small inside decor average.Rooms seem to come with either a balcony or a terrace. The terrace is large but the balcony rooms, the balconys are too small to sit outside.Would go back to this hotel but next time I would opt for the rear room with a terrace. Capri is very popular and therefore not cheap but this hotel would seem to offer value for money

Room Tip: Front rooms suffer from traffic noise, choose a terrace room if you want to sit outside

We spent 2 wonderful days at the Hotel San Michele. Built in 1880, it exudes the history of this fantastic island, but with all the comforts of a four-star hotel. Furnishings in the lobby areas are period pieces. Meticulously maintained, easy stroll to Anacapri centre, overlooking Capri and the Bay of Naples, a great choice on the Isle of Capri.

There is something exquisitely unforgettable about this hotel that overlooks the beautiful Marina Grande and the town of Capri below. It's as though the walls speak of both history, and permanence at the same time. It's like a place out of time, that beacons you back, like the island itself does, like the people, the food, the open, loving energy of Capri. This hotel does not dazzle you with glass and lights, but instead with antique furniture, marble floors, and a structure that stands out not only because of its amazing location but because of its personality. The arched windows of it's restaurant, every one a stunning view, the cuisine un-matched in my opinion on the island, the garden and fountain, serene and private, allowing for a moment with spirits found, or those long forgotten. The surrounding reality that is AnaCapri, and Capri below, make Hotel San Michele the most memorable, and most missed vacation spot I've experienced. Don't miss it.
