As part of a self catering deal we had a 10% discount on dinner including wine. The welcome was tepid as the staff seemed overwhelmed and we had to wait a significant time at the bar to order a pre dinner drink. Once in the restaurant service improved marginally which was a shame because the staff seemed to be doing their best, however the food was excellent, freshly prepared and most was locally produced.
In short very good food spoilt by so so service.

We booked our room last minute as we were over for a few days to crack on with some wedding planning. I was looking forward to staying here as the building is so grand and I always admired it when passing, and the website looked good.

On arrival we were met by Roger. I can't believe this is the same Roger who others have enthused over as, having just started speaking to us, he answered the phone without so much as an 'excuse me'. Still, it gave me time to admire the wonderful panelled entrance hall with a lovely staircase. I also had time to wander into the lounges which were cosy and felt really well finished. Once Roger came back to us we told him the hotel had been recommended for a wedding function to which he tutted, rolled his eyes and said 'we can do them... but they're a bit of a faff. You'd have to be done by 6 too for the other guests'. How to be made to feel welcome!

Still, onwards and upwards. We had a 'Godolphin' room which was the one from the picture on the website. Very nicely finished, great bathroom and with Molton Brown toiletries which was a classy touch. Our view was of the flat roof but that was never a deal breaker.

We went down for dinner and were sat at a table by the garden window which was lovely. Service was hit and miss. Our waitress was very attentive but overall it seemed a bit of a shambles. Our drinks arrived after our starters, the tables either side of us were asked twice for their starter and mains orders (the staff not realising they had already been taken) and some of the staff seemed to speak really poor English, struggling to understand a question from another table about how hot the food was. The menu was ok - a meat, a fish and a vege option, but not great. The 'fish' option, for example, was a Thai red curry of pollock and muscles with noodles. It was very nice and well cooked but hardly what you expect for a £200 dinner bed and breakfast hotel's restaurant as the only fish option - especially on an island with such fine seafood!

Having had a long day we got an early night in the big, comfy bed and had a great sleep. The shower was good and we felt set up for the day ahead. Breakfast was a bit of a free for all with a buffet shoved in a corner. I was almost leaning over someone sat at their table to get to the milk. Again, the service let it down - our tea and toast arrived after about 10 minutes and literally as our cooked order arrived. The food was great - we were spoilt with Staffordshire oatcakes which were delicious, as was the cooked breakfast. It all just seemed a bit disorganised and chaotic.

Worth mentioning as we had a fair bit to do, the wifi was poor. We were on the first floor but the room nearest the staircase to reception and we received no signal so had to take all our stuff down to the lounge which was comfy and very pleasant but still a bit of a faff.

All in all I was left disappointed. The hotel could be one of the best on the island but we stayed in The Star Castle in May which was far superior - and cheaper! It almost seemed like the hotel was trying too hard. THe food was good, the lounges comfy and the room was great but the staffing needs to be stepped up. In that aspect there is no comparison with The Star Castle, which is where we'll be heading without doubt in the future.

We were a party of 16 in the four family suites which were at the back of the Hotel out of the way. It could be made more attractive with window boxes etc.

Clearly this is a Hotel where a quart has been put into a pint pot so space is a premium especially the restaurant which is obviously too small and needs more staff to manage. One suspects that the kitchen is also too small especially in the evening when there needs to be strong management/ MaitreD which there wasn't.

The owner had taken a holiday (peak time!!) and it showed especially at breakfast and dinner.

The food was however brilliant, high class and perhaps just too rich especially if you had it every night?

It is an excellent location. accepts dogs near the only St' Mary's beach that allows dogs in the summer which was important especially as we had 3!!

Roger the Manager is a star, very helpful but he cannot be there all the time. It seems to have the Scillonian problem.......lack of good staff who speak English but I would thoroughly recommend a 5 star award.

Room Tip: Family Suites are good value if you want to have nice meals while baby sitting.

Our first day was a disappointment. We waited over half an hour in the nearly empty bar for a sandwich. When it arrived it was a baguette. Too late to change it as we needed to get to the harbour for a boat trip. To be fair it was nice. The evening menu was disappointing. Fish and chips, lasagne, or veggie option with chilli in it. All written in very flowery language. On the A la Carte menu was steamed John Dory with fennel and seasonal vegetables. Great, just what I would like. Over 3/4 hour later it arrived. It was so overwhelmingly flavoured with fennel that whatever the delicate flavoured fish was completely lost. The lettuce garnish was gritty. I had to ask for the new potatoes and seasonal vegetables that got forgotten. Our bedroom window wouldn't close properly and there was a gale blowing. Every time I got up to shut it the wind sucked it open again. This was fixed the next day. The bed was comfortable and the lounge facilities were delightful. Pleasant and helpful staff. Room very clean and nicely furnished. I felt that it is over priced for the standard of food and service. Double room 3 nights 1/2 board plus glasses of wine with dinner and 2 sandwich lunches and the bill was just under £700.00

Room Tip: Cannot comment. Our room at the back was perfectly acceptable once the window was fixed.
