Make the short detour off the highway, if interesting wines interest you. Moombaki was planted about 20 years ago, on soils reminiscent of Bordeaux (deep gravels). A sheltered valley, a north-facing aspect, and the loving care of the owners give you a small selection of excellent white and red wines. They grow Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. There is also Shiraz from Frankland River. The six or so wines on the tasting card were all interesting and very good. These wines are made for love, not for medals, and it shows. The whites retain balanced body and fruit, not being taken through to the character of lemon juice, in the current fashion. The reds are neither over-big nor hard and closed, and cellar very well. Judicious use of oak barrels in both cases. The sweet little cellar door tasting room, lined with the owners' art and craft products, is a delightful place to explore and discuss these wines. If you want a free drink, go somewhere else. If you want to experience original and excellent wines, go to Moombaki.
