“' Peaceful and Friendly'”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

Thank-you so much to the Team that run Dunsborough Rail Carriages and Farm Cottages.
You gave Denise and I a warm welcome and helped us when we required assistance.

The Carriage, 2, was well appointed, warm and clean. We wanted for nothing.
The grounds were absolutely beautiful and peaceful. Robert, do not cut the grass and just leave the natural look , as is. We love every-thing that gives a real bush outlook.

You guys are so friendly, including the domestic lady, from Cheshire, with that magic smile.
Ellen, thanks. We are definitely coming back, sooner than later. We will let the network know.

See ya! soon, Alan and Denise Scott..

Room Tip: Please check the web site and check out the pics., This stay is a must! ' Absolute Tranquility...

We've just returned from three nights staying in one of the railway carriages at Dunsborough. We loved it!! Interestingly, a lot of the other reviews seem to focus on it being a little run down and in need of work. Personally, I think they are missing the point of this place... it's rustic... it's in the middle of the countryside (while being only minutes from the beach)... it's peaceful and it's priced appropriately for what you get. This isn't a shiny, pristine hotel - it is a charming spot, a step up from camping where you can escape the crowds and truly relax. Sure - there are a few cobwebs but you have a broom - sweep them away if you don't like them.

We stayed in carriage 1 and we were three adults. Four would have been too cosy and its definitely perfect for couples. The facilities were everything we needed - a single hotplate, kettle, microwave and fridge and we did cook one night just fine. There were also barbecues that seemed to be getting plenty of use. The little deck area was lovely and we spent most of our time there - watching the rabbits, birds and kangaroos. If you're an early bird take a wander around the property just after the sunrise to catch the kangaroos.

Very peaceful. Perfect for tucking into a bottle or two after a hard day at the wineries. I would definitely stay here again.

Just returned from 5 days in Cottage 2 and totally agree with others, the setting is peaceful and lovely to be able to take your dog but before we even went inside noticed the fly screen door did not close and I doubt it had ever been cleaned, the table and chairs outside had never been wiped or unstacked for our arrival. It was advertised as ensuite facilities which means to me that there is a separate ensuite and a bathroom - it is a semi-ensuite. I only booked it because we require 2 wc's and showers. The shower head was diabolical and if you do not want your hair wet at every shower take a shower cap. The water was mostly freezing cold or went cold in the middle of your shower and we all had the same problem The toilet door was really dirty below the doorknob and inside the kitchen drawers were unclean too. The beds and linen were fine but we will not return for another visit.

We stayed for 3 nights in Standard Cottage 2.

What we liked about it:
1. peaceful surroundings. you can hear the rustling of the leaves when the wind blows. you can barely hear the sound of the cars on the roadside
2. modern kitchen faciltiies --whirlpool fridge, microwave oven, scanpan pots and pans. cutlery and crockery are matching (i've been to another unit elsewhere where the crockery and cutlery were spare unmatched pieces)
3. linens looked and smelled clean
4. huge bath
5. flat screen TV and DVD player - the photo of the standard cottage on the website shows a bulky TV set, so seeing the flat screen TV in the actual unit was a pleasant surprise

what can be improved:
the place is generally clean. however when we got into the cottage, there were bits of black shreds (they looked like bits of burnt wood) all over the lounge area. we had to sweep the floor first thing. the floor mats inside the house (front door and laundry area) also needed some washing up or maybe even a replacement. there was also a stack of crates by the dining area when we got in. The next day we happened to be there when some people tending to the honeybees were around and those crates were actually theirs and the lady told us that she didn't know the unit was rented out. We are guessing after this point that the unit is probably lent out to the honeybee people when they come in to work, and that probably explains those black shreds in the lounge. However, we would expect the operators of the cottage to do a last minute check of the units on the day the guest is supposed to check in to see that everything is in order.

the kitchen cupboards also need some cleaning up -- we had to wash up all pans, pots, crockery and cutlery before we used them coz the cupboards were very dusty and musty inside

in the toilet, there was an opened toilet roll on the holder and just another 1 extra roll. this supply wasn't enough for a 3-night stay for a family of 4.

we had expected a lot of farm animals but only saw 2 llamas and 2 ponies and a few chickens. the llamas and ponies were even confined in one area only of the farm.

We had a wonderful few days in Dunsborough in Cottage 2. The cottages are not pristinely clean but this is a good thing as you don't have to worry about bringing mud inside. The cottage was fitted with comfy beds, a large flat screen TV and Scanpan saucepans which were great to cook for. The wood fire is very cosy and you are supplied with plenty of fire and lighting wood. There is also reverse cycle airconditioning if you need it. There are large grassed areas outside the cottages and there are miniture ponies, chickens and alpacas on the farm as well. It's a close drive to town and the beach but not one and two kilometres as the website says, more like two and four kilometres. It is however close to Simmo's Icecreamery and walking distance to the soap factory and ecoshop which I highly recommend visiting. A great place for a relaxing holiday and great value for the price.

Absolut brilliant stay. Our first time in a carriage - we loved it. Spacious, clean, in the green, peaceful, BBQ facility just in front. At night, nothing than the wind and some animal noises - heavenly. Our dog was welcome as well. We will go there for our annual leave. Hosts nice and helpful. Great and not expensive - especially for Dunsborough!!!!!

Room Tip: Go for the carriages - absolut cool. Carriage 2 has been wonderful.

I have stayed here several times and loved it every time. The kids love to be let free to roam and check out the animals and help with egg collecting and feeding . It can get muddy when wet but the kids loved running around in their rubber boots. I have stayed in the cottages and the rail carriage and enjoyed both. My last stay was with my sister and our 3 grandkids April 2012. Great area to visit, and Simmos Ice Cream Parlour within walking distance.
