We stayed for two nights in the budget accommodatiion. This is one step up from the backpackers. This was all that was available as it was the start of the Easter 2012 holidays in the Pilbara region of WA.
Having said this, the unit we stayed in was basic but adequate and spotlessly clean. The units tend to be a bit noisy as they are near the baclpackers and the hotel bar and restuarant. However, this was not really a problem. Some guys up for the fishing tend to sit outside their units at night chatting and drinking beer. Well it is Australia. They were not overly intrusive.
We did not see inside the more expensive hotel accommodation but it looked fine from the outside.
Not at all cheap by Scottish standards but this part of Western Australia is an expensive place to visit let alone live.

Room Tip: Be aware of local holidays and book early. The more exdpensive the room the better and quieter it is...

OK first of all, because I know it's the number one question on your mind: Ningaloo or Great Barrier Reef? We did both in the space of two months and can honestly say, Ningaloo was better. Awesome remoteness, amazing non-touristy, incredible multi-day snorkeling right off shore. On a holiday weekend you could count the people on two hands. Better marine life variety and you only have to walk out in the water a few minutes to see it. (Granted it doesn't have the rainforest near GBR which is awesome to see in its own right, but it does have limitless desert which is just as beautiful, and turquoise water...plus safe swimming.) Now for the hotel, well, with a name like Potshot, I have to admit I was apprehensive. We had given up a room at the Novotel (at considerably higher price) in order to stay near friends. We got the regular hotel room and were completely surprised on opening the door. Simple, but very comfortable and very clean. Roomy, too. Standard toiletries provided, hair dryer available upon request at front desk. I had trouble getting the internet code I purchased to work and they graciously refunded the amount without my asking. The rooms included a very spacious refrigerator (no microwave but coffee makings, so there must have been a coffee pot available). We really appreciated the excellent A/C and also the window coverings which were designed to keep out light and desert heat.

Curious, I found out it's called Potshot because that was the name of the top secret WWII sub refueling depot or something like that...(poor marketing decision, but whatever). Anyway, it is a heritage thing not a reflection of the quality. Granted, this is hardly a luxury hotel, but frankly I can't imagine paying a whole lot more for the Novotel which didn't look that much better. It was clean and quite acceptable inside the rooms...far beyond what you would expect just looking at the outside. The staff were very helpful as well.

Note: If I were to return, I would definitely plan to use the fridge and rent some plates/utensils from the front desk to eat in the room or get the self-service apartments because getting service in the restaurants around town is ridiculous. Even with reservations it was 2 and 1/2 hours one evening at one restaurant, 2 hours dinner at another and almost an 1 1/2 for lunch at a third (with one couple's order coming after we had nearly finished). The prices at the restaurants are as high as major cities downtown restaurants, but the grocery store (IGA) prices are very reasonable. In all fairness, we were there on a holiday weekend, but really, it was absurd how long it took to eat out. I mean, after a day of hiking and snorkeling we were exhausted and hardly wanted to sit at table for hours. We did discover sort of a secret however...apparently like European restaurants, they make one reservation per table per night and if you can convince the restaurant to squeeze you in before that time..they hurry to get you out! On our last night, we returned to one of the restaurants which said that they could squeeze us in at 7 but we absolutely HAD to be done by 8:15 for the reservation to come...were they serious? We almost laughed out loud... we would LOVE to be out by 8:15 if only they would promise to get us served by then. We had our food in 15 minutes. It was the fastest service we've had in Australia ever and we were out the door by 8:00. Is everybody happy? Well I should say.

Generally speaking, there are plenty of camping facilities in the area if you are self-drive. I prefer to spend a little and stay at Potshot...great A/C, no dust and dirt, pleasant pool, friendly staff. They even have dorm room type accommodations if you are on a tight budget.

Either way you can snorkel and swim to your heart's content for free at gorgeous Tourquoise Bay or any number of other choices. There's even a rusted out underwater shipwreck to explore if you dare, near the lighthouse. A convenient shuttle makes daily rounds to and from the airport for $25 pp each way, and the IGA, as well as restaurants, dive shop (to rent equipment) and shops are walking distance (2-4 blocks) from the Potshot Resort.
Now your next question is do you pay $375 to swim with the whale sharks...tough call. if you are there in season and can afford it, sure. It was amazing. We only saw one and that one only 5 meters but had a face to face encounter for 2 seconds that we will never forget. The tour we took was 3 Islands (check other review) which did a great job and worth the price.

Room Tip: We preferred the lower rooms...easier access in and out with no stairs.

Ningaloo is one of the best places to snorkel or dive with Whale Sharks, watch dugongs and whales or just snorkel in crystal clear lagoons. The Pot Shot is a low key but well laid out place with pools, bars, burgers, and things that make a lazy tropical adventure fun for the whole family. There are other more expensive places around Ningaloo, but the reasonably priced ones lack the atmosphere and facilities of the Pot Shot (although they are probably quieter at night) and the chic Eco-lodge, while beautiful, is so astronomically priced that I suspect one's fellow guests would not be nearly as fun as those at the Pot Shot.

Stayed here with our two young kids for 3 nights. The 2 bedroom units are spacious with a back/front and bbq. Also a pool close by which was great for the kids. Aircon in both bedrooms and main room. Servicing of the rooms could have been a bit better but at least she knocked on the door both mornings to ask if we needed anything. Perhaps the cars with big boat trailers etc could have an allocated part of the car park away from the rooms as we found we constantly had to park a bit away due to inconsiderate boat owners. Otherwise all good.

Lovely location and ambience, sat outside on the deck which had table service. the waitress that served us was very attentive and friendly.

BUT whatever you do don't order the curry. We ordered a lamb rogan josh and a beef madras and the waiter commented that you couldn't tell which was which when he put them on the table but that the chef had assured him that they were different meals. Guess what they both tasted and looked the same - very dissappointing.

It would be fair to say that we were very disappointed with the initial room assigned to us on checking in at the Potshot. It was a Homestead room. These rooms are built out of corrugated metal and arranged in blocks. They are fairly small, dark inside and the furnishings look well used. Our room was clean but that did not offset the initial disappointment. It felt like Cell Block H!

We guess these are primarily for itinerant workers rather than holidaymakers/tourists.

We paid to upgrade to a 2 bedroom apartment which was much better. The restaurant food was OK but the layout and furniture was canteen style. There was space and plumbing for a washing machine in the bathroom but it looked as if it had been removed.

The Potshot caters for a variety of guests so ensure you book the type you require.

We ate at Pinnochios, an Italian restaurant a short drive away. The food was very good. Please note the portions are big enough so that two people could share one starter and one main course.

The staff are friendly and helpful.

I would try somewhere different if I returned to Exmouth.

We stayed at Potshots for 1 night then across the road at Ospray for another 3 nights. The rooms @ Potshots are ok they are clean but the bathrooms need more attention, I think they may be wiped rather cleaned, surface clean I would call it. Tea/coffee available, no hairdryers!!
The air conditioner is so loud, even with ear plugs I couldn't sleep.
Across the road at Osprey we paid an extra 25.00 per night for exactly the same room but it had a spa, which we didn't use as the bathroom really needed a good scrub. Dirt and grim in the shower and on the floors and walls, and no space for toilitrey bags. No hairdryers.
When we asked the about the vertical blinds that were missing slats they came and hung a sheet over the window making it hard to get in and out of the sliding door.
The staff at the reception are very good and helpful and the pool bar/ and restaurant are fantastic for meals and late night partying.
They do accommodate for backpackers as well.
These motel/apartments are ok .
They had air conditioners which are more updated and quite good, bedding was fairly good.
The staff at the front desk are very good and helpful

Room Tip: Right in town and the pool restaurant is great
