“magic place”
Reviewed 10 November 2013

This was an amazing place to stay . We were lucky to have the resort to ourselves and Tristan had taken over management 2 months earlier. He was extremely attentive and had an excellent staff of Cameron as guide and Jean Piere as chef. The accommodation was wonderful and the beach incredible with the reef being only a few fee from the shore.

It is not often that our expectations are not just met but also exceeded.

The whole Sal Salis experience was fantastic and we are grateful to Tristan, Georgie and all the staff for making our stay so pleasant. In particular, we would like to thank John our exclusive guide for two days. Not only was he a font of knowledge for all things sea and land, his cool and resourcefulness was critical in an emergency (“stacking the oyster stack”!). He also understands how to mix natural beauty with champagne sunsets.

Lay back , relax and allow the team to organise everything for you, nothing is too much trouble, and nature does all the rest. The location is amazing, literally metres to the reef and a short drive to some great gorge walks. We stuck to the camp facilities and itineraries and had both an active and relaxing stay at the same time – from turtles to sunset canapés, delicious dinners and early to bed.

We loved the simple comfort of the tents (and the sound of the tent flapping at night) and the respect for the environment (short showers and no reading lights). Don’t come if you are expecting Qualia or Bali – at Sal Salis you share your environment with nature, its beauty and its constraints.

Bring your book and binoculars and forget your electronic gadgets (nothing “connected” works at Sal Salis).

Two styles of stay are available “Ningaloo Chill Out” and “Ultimate Reef Escape” – what we have described here is the Ultimate Reef Escape. While the Chill Out package is half the price, in our view it is less than half as good – the activities and guides are part of the Ultimate package and are critical for a fantastic and safe experience.

This is one of the few “once in a lifetime experiences” we would seriously consider doing again.

Was part of a small tour group of 10 and we had the place to ourselves. Great tents, great beds, great setting. Interesting open bathrooms which would be great in summer as there are no mosquitos there. However they were a bit challenging during our short stay due to a massive cold front that just happened to come across WA while we were there and made for very cold and breezy sit on the pit loo (no smell) and showering with a water-saving shower head (they are in a National Park so strict on 20L per person per day).
This weather led to noisy flapping tent sides - all night, but we could still just hear the waves crashing on the outer reef.
However - deapite the weather - it was a great place and the staff were really helpful, the food fantastic, the wines fitted the food really well and the walk up to Yardie Creek through the Gorge was very scenic and the guide very informative.

Sal Salis is in a beautiful part of Western Australia - away from all technology where you can enjoy nature at it's best.
The drive from Exmouth is beautiful and all the beach stops/walks worthwhile to do.
The Sal Salis accommodation is amazing and we loved waking up in a tent to views of the sea as we walked to the main dining area for breakfast.
The bed was comfortable and we loved the bathroom exposed to the open air but undercover. The hammock was a treat to relax in, in the late afternoon as the sun set out over the ocean - spectacular colours.
The staff were great (especially John who helped us plan our days) and met all our needs from snorkelling trips and Cape Range treks, to organising a Humpback Whale sightseeing trip last minute when our fishing trip was cancelled.
We loved it all and plan on visiting again....hopefully to see the Whale Sharks next time.

Sal Salis is in an absolutely beautiful and remote location amongst the sand dunes with the reef just metres away. The accommodation, activities, food, wine - all done well. The staff worked hard to ensure everyone experienced the area and what was available. Snorkeling with the whale sharks was certainly the highlight - an amazing experience to be so close to such large animals. A must visit location.

Really loved it here - ningaloo is one of the most stunning places in the world. Stayed 4 nights which felt like 2 weeks i was so relaxed. Staff were good fun and very welcoming. Would definitely go back- coral reef, stars, solitude, whales, margaret river wines, seafood, pork belly, great chat at meal times and comfy bed - perfect!

We (family of 3) stayed in mid August. We hired a car at Exmouth airport for $ 250 for 4 days..cheaper than the SS transfer, but I can see why the pricing by SS ($150pp?) discourages booking their transfer as it would take one of the limited staff offsite for c.3 hours each trip We found the staff (Justin, the manager, was onsite) friendly and informative. The camp was full (18 people..mixed nationalities and ages) but chef (French, there for a short period) coped admirably (including with vegetarians and nut allergies, and children's diets) and could not have been more helpful.
The guiding (John and Cameron) was superb, and I disagree with another reviewer's comment on Cameron. We found Cameron to be passionate about the area and its flora and fauna, and hugely well informed. John likewise, and both were very conscientous about safety and ensuring that people did not go too far beyond their abilities (esp. for some of the snorkelling).
Tents were lovely, and the 20 litre pp water allowance easy to manage as long as you don't take 2 lengthy showers per day. The water limit for the whole camp (including kitchen washing up, staff showers) is very strictly regulated by the Park authority to limit effect on the local ecosystem from discharge.
The food was good (not top restaurant quality but this is a campsite, and the chef is cooking in a tent!), and some was excelllent (a superb paella, also grilled barramundi). The wine is fine, and we enjoyed Vibeke's charming announcment of what the wines were each evening.
The staff are young, and given the isolation and hard physical work that the site involves (filling tent water tanks each morning, for example) this is not surprising, and they work 10 days on/4 days off staying in an on site bunkhouse so it is not an easy job. Yes they chat to each other when cooking, but it was nice to see that they enjoyed their time there too. They will not bow and scrape to you, and neither should they (even with a "luxury" tag). They will be friendly, and call you by your first name.
Meals are communal and you need to be able to get on with strangers, but all of the guests were interesting and from very different backgrounds, some used to expensive holidays, some there as a special treat.
Activities are weather and tide dependent and they do their best to work around that, but you need to be flexible.
