“In the hidden valley”
Reviewed 9 May 2012

The Wairua Lodge in the Hidden Valley B&B is just that – about 10km out of Whitianga - it is in an isolated valley surrounded by forest. The rooms are small and motel-like with not-very-private verandahs but this is offset by the great location. The property has a creek meandering through it and we went for a swim in one of the private waterholes. We also went for fascinating walks in the steep forest leading down to the creek.

If you like quiet, remote, and beautiful (and you have a little adventure in you) this place tops the chart. The owners Tam and Charles are wonderful hosts! They go above and beyond to make sure you are comfortable. The outside bath house is absolutely wonderful. A glass of wine, Pink Floyd in the background, and nothing separating you form the forest; life at its best. Just writing this review makes me feel sad that this is a story told from the past, as I wish I was there in the present. Tam and Charles, I don't know if you remember us, but we will certainly never forget you, the "easy" walks up the streams, and the Wairua lodge.

P.S. We did make it out to White Island after all (with great weather)!

Room Tip: The king room comes with your own grill. This is very convenient when other people may be cooking i...

From the moment we arrived at Wairua lodge and had to drive through a shallow river, we knew it was special.
We stayed in one of the cabin rooms, which was furnished beautifully and very cosy.
The weather was a bit rainy when we arrived but we still had a brilliant time swimming in the river at the lodge, we then warmed up in the spa pool!
The hosts were very friendly, helpful and professional. The breakfast was delicious and I would recommend Wairua lodge to anyone.
We plan on returning later this year with my parents when they visit New Zealand.

We spent the final night of our NZ road trip at Wairua Lodge and it was by far the highlight of our trip. It being the beginning of the off season, we had the entire lodge to ourselves. We were greeted with a warm and friendly welcome by Charles and Tam who showed us around the property. It is quite amazing how they have crafted this special place that fits snuggly into the natural landscape and very suiting that they call their rooms "snugs". The essence of the lodge was one which celebrates the beauty of the environment and the wildlife that inhabits it. The night was magical and adventurous with torches lit across the property and access to the outdoor bath under the stars and the spa with our own personal torch. We had access to the barbecue, kitchen and sitting area complete with a variety of current reading material, dvds and games. The owners seemed to have thought of everything imaginable that would make ones stay special, as it really is the little touches that count the most. The night in the snug was cozy and warm and we were free to remain at the property to enjoy the various hikes the next day. Charles crafted many of the hikes himself, one of which we did which was a climb up various waterfalls. The Wairua Lodge was truly a special and magical place and we would be so thrilled to be able to stay again in future.

We happened upon Wairua Lodge by chance. One of my prerequisites for a 'mini-moon' was that it needed to have an outside bath. So I did a Google search and Wairua Lodge popped up. It not only had an outside TREETOP bathhouse, but also a hot tub/spa - bonus! After months of organising our wedding and having family staying, we also wanted somewhere we could just 'stop' and do nothing. With no mobile or TV reception Wairua Lodge was perfect. Our King Snug was lovely, with all that we wanted, and Tam, Charles and Zachary (the cat) were super friendly and accommodating. We'd definitely recommend Wairua Lodge to anyone wanting to escape the noise and bustle of the city, and get back to nature :-)

Room Tip: They're all good!

We spent our first two nights in New Zealand at Wairua Lodge and had a wonderful experience! The owners, Charles and Tam, couldn't have been friendlier or more welcoming. Upon arrival, they gave us a tour of the grounds and all the amenities. Our room (called a "snug") was comfortable and clean. The second night of our stay we decided to stay in and prepare a meal in the common area kitchen. This room is so cute, has a complete kitchen, gas grill, comfy sofas, candles and a cd player for background music. Both nights we ENJOYED the tree-top bath house which was amazing! Even had a hot tub. Everything was perfect- even their "little" 4-legged friend, Zachary. Made a great kickoff to our vacation!

Room Tip: Make sure you write your name on the schedule for the tree top bath house! Wonderful!

We stayed in the River Desck Suite July 2009 - I know I know, a bit late writing this review but oh well!
My husband and I eloped and the following weekend we decided to stay here for a few nights. We absolutly loved the location of Wairua Lodge. The gentle sounds of the river at night was lovely, and the bathhouse was a highlight.
Being that we stayed here in the middle of winter, the smell of the wooden walls was glorious and the rooms were nice and cosy warm. We feasted on apple and rhubarb pie with lots of warm custard! Yum.
Were thinking about coming back to stay again for our 3rd wedding anniversary this winter too!

Room Tip: River Deck Suite for sure!
