“Wish we had spent most of our trip here!”
Reviewed 24 March 2013

My wife looked at me and said "this is a honeymoon" while we were in the most romantic place of our honeymoon trip through northern NZ.
We were getting a late start along the winding roads of the Coromandel peninsula, and arrived at Wairua Lodge (thanks to Frommers) after sunset. The road in looked like we were entering Jurassic Park, getting progressively smaller until it crosses a small stream and heads uphill to the lodge and cabins. It was so peaceful and idyllic on the other side of that stream. Charles and Tam, upon hearing that we hadn't had dinner yet, brought us a great selection of food from their own kitchen, which we prepared in the well-appointed community kitchen near our room.
My wife was in awe of how gorgeous everything was and felt like we had landed in a magical place. It was the best night of sleep we had in three weeks of traveling (including the south pacific), silent except for the sounds of creek and the calls of morepork owls.
We didn't want to leave the candle-lit bath/spa overlooking a forested hill and creek below — they really know how to do romance!
What was amazing about the Lodge was that it was the nicest place we stayed during our travels, but it was also the least expensive! Such a good value and we really wished we had booked a whole week there.
This is one of those places that you don't really want to tell people about because you want it to remain your little secret. Charles and Tam went above and beyond to make our stay relaxing and they did a fantastic job restoring their piece of paradise. The property is incredible with plenty of hikes and river swimming holes. It is an easy drive to Cathedral Cove & Hot Water Beach but you definitely do not feel like a tourist. You should see my wife's expression when she talks about this place.

We spent 3 nights at Wairua Lodge, in the King Snug, at the end of our 5 week adventure in New Zealand. The Coromandel Peninsula took us by surprise. We expected a busy resort style area to be what we saw and instead we found the opposite was true. We love places that are on the 'road less traveled' and Wairua Lodge is a perfect answer to that. Firstly the directions we had from Tam were excellent and it is easy to find if you follow those. When we arrived we were enveloped by the tranquility and peacefulness of this place that strives to surround you with the natural beauty of these hills and its abundance of growth.
Our room was very comfortable and we had all we needed. We had our dinner each night on our own little patio, and then we could sit and relax listening to nature as the day drew to a close. One night we took a walk down by the river to search out the glow worms. A beautiful sight.
It wasn't quite warm enough for us to enjoy swimming in the river or jumping off the rope swing but we will save that for our next visit! There are amazing beaches not too far away and some really lovely quirky places to eat that are full of character, and characters!
A perfect way to end your day is to book your hour in the tree house bathtub. In the quiet of the evening you can hear the owls calling, other birds gently singing, and you can wind down luxuriating in this lovely big bath for two.
Charles and Tam both are eager to help with any information they can provide you with to enjoy this area. Also, if you are missing something when you prepare your evening meal...they might just have that bottle of sauce you are looking for!
This place invites you to stop, to listen, to really let your senses come alive and find in that tranquility, that your heart can listen to life in revitalized way.
If you are a contemplative at heart....this is indeed the place for you!

Room Tip: There is not a swimming pool but a beautiful river to plunge into - your own swimming hole right the...

We stayed for 4 nights in the King Snug room, which was spacious and very comfortable, overlooking the gardens. We had a private patio, complete with a bbq. Tam and Charles were perfect hosts, giving us plenty of freedom, yet providing help and information when required.
The bath house was a great experience, as close to nature as you could get, private, romantic, candle lit, looking out to a floodlit river valley, just so relaxing. The walks our hosts have designed are very interesting ranging from challenging to easy- and we tried them all.
We were visiting from Australia, and found the whole experience very enjoyable, and would recommend it as a highlight place to stay. We found the location most convenient for exploring the Coromandel Peninsula. Would we stay again? most definitely.

Room Tip: All the rooms were well positioned, choose one that suits your needs.

Many of the reviews here cover the wonderful aspects of this magical place.
The owners are delightful and helpful and still give you the space for privacy.
A highlight for us was the two person bathtub tree house. It was so unique.
We enjoy the sun going down and the owls coming out and within our vision.
Bubble bath was provided for our use and we enjoyed a glass of red wine while
we relaxed in the beautiful and spacious tub. It couldn't have been more perfect!

I have stayed here three times with friends and family and loved it everytime. It is tucked away in a remote area near Whitianga that serves perfectly for a relaxing getaway.

The rooms are clean and simple but well appointed. Each has a bbq. Breakfast is delivered the night before abd each room has a toaster and kettle allowing you to enjoy breakfast at your own pace while soaling in the peace and views (I highly recommend the local honey, delicious!).

Around the lodge are a number of walks and swimming holes to cap off the visit enjoying a book in a hammock.

The best part of it all though is the owners. Each time we have stayed they have gone out of their way to help us. They are the warmest hosts I have met and have great local knowledge. They have made this one of my favourite places to stay in New Zealand and a sure fire recommendation to anyone I know.

We stayed for 2 nights in the River Suite room at Wairua Lodge in December 2012, we had the most wonderful time! Charles and Tam (the owners) were so friendly and helpful, they gave us all the tips and information we needed/wanted, and then just left us alone. The Suite was perfect. It was very large, you could easily have 2 couples in there, and the facilities were great. The Bathhouse was a real experience, it was very romantic to have a bath outside, in privacy, overlooking the forrest and river, with candles and music. We went on some beautiful walks (just be careful of trying to climb up the waterfall with the rope- I had a bit of a stack). We went swimming in the waterholes, there was no one else around, it was so peaceful and refreshing (read cold!)! basically it was the prefect getaway, I could have happily stayed for much longer, and we will definitely be back! Thank you Tam and Charles

Room Tip: I would recommend the River View Suite as it is fully self-contained and very private, with fantasti...

We stayed for a week in a King snug, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The rooms were spacious, and our bed was very comfortable. Having a personal BBQ was a nice touch as well. Both hosts were extremely generous of their time, and provided many useful tips which greatly enhanced our travel. The Lodge itself is delightful, and a great value. The grounds are beautiful as well as the river and trails. We loved the night sounds, especially the moreporks! Having access to a the tree house or tub hot tub after active days was a great bonus as well.
