“An overwhelming treat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2013

My partner drove me to the lodge having managed to keep the relaxing, weekend getaway a complete secret even as we drove down the meandering bush driveway and through the ford.
It is jaw droppingly beautiful here and completely tranquil. My partner could not have planned a better location for me to unwind as a birthday and anniversary surprise. It moved me to tears. I was well in need of a retreat!
As soon as we arrived we were lured into exploring some of the lovely bush tracks, and we traversed down the waterfall track. Although it was autumn I couldn't resist one of the two swimmming holes and it was the perfect way to refresh and invigorate me!
In the evenings, we soaked in the stunning, candlelit, bush bathtub and fell asleep to the sound of the river.
The room was just right for us and breakfasts well received. It was lovely to eat breakfast looking out across the bush and river, near the laden Macadamia tree and with fantails flitting around.
There were other guests staying but we may as well have been the only ones there, it was very peaceful.
We took the short drive to Whitianga, visiting the Lost Spring, cafe's, restaurants and shops. Each time we retured to the lodge it was like driving through a magical gateway to a tranquil retreat.
Pictures do not do this wonderful place justice. Our hosts were completely delightful, helpful and unobtrusive.
I left feeling renewed and relaxed to an extent I have not known for a long time. We are looking forward to returning soon.
Thank you.

My husband and I had 8 wonderful days relaxing at this beautiful place. The hosts, Tam and Charles are very welcomig and have so much helpful information about the area. Wairua Lodge is within easy reach of all the beautiful beaches and walks nearby, but also only 12 minutes from the delightful town of Whitianga, with acess to the sea, boats and good places to eat.

Wairua Lodge itself is set in an idylic bush setting, with many little hidden areas in the garden to sit in. There are also pretty bush walks and secluded swiiming holes to swim in. The spa and bush bath were a wonderful way to relax at the end of each day. Charles lights flares and candles in all the outside areas every evening to add a touch of magic to the whole atmosphere...very special.
The rooms are well appointed and very comfortable.
We will be back!

Room Tip: The self contained river view unit is very private and has a lovely sitting, kitchen, dining area, b...

This is a very special place. Maximum of 6 rooms (4 king rooms en suite & river suite which has 1 king & queen with own kitchen/lounge). The setting is beautiful, luscious bush with rivers and streams, which Owners Tam & Charlie have made various nature walks through. Incredible sounds of nature can be heard.
It has a shared kitchen/dining room for the king rooms to use if needed.
things that you need to do there, besides relaxing and going for walks that is, is to book an hour in the large spa pool, take a drink with you and chill out.
The best thing to do though is the treetop bath - this is the piste de resistance. Beautifully set up to overlook lit up bush and a stream. It is private and covered. It is big enough for two and there are candles and a choice of music if you choose to use it. however it is also great for one with a glass of wine and a book!
Tam & Charlie are great hosts and are really helpful and friendly.

Just got back from a long weekend staying in the Hidden Valley Lodge and I just had to write a review to say just how much I loved this little B&B! The hosts, Tam and Charlie were wonderfully friendly and so helpful, the location was great for visiting both Coromandel Town and Whitianga and there were some fun little walks to do on the property too. I couldn't have asked for a nicer place to stay to celebrate my Birthday!

My wife looked at me and said "this is a honeymoon" while we were in the most romantic place of our honeymoon trip through northern NZ.
We were getting a late start along the winding roads of the Coromandel peninsula, and arrived at Wairua Lodge (thanks to Frommers) after sunset. The road in looked like we were entering Jurassic Park, getting progressively smaller until it crosses a small stream and heads uphill to the lodge and cabins. It was so peaceful and idyllic on the other side of that stream. Charles and Tam, upon hearing that we hadn't had dinner yet, brought us a great selection of food from their own kitchen, which we prepared in the well-appointed community kitchen near our room.
My wife was in awe of how gorgeous everything was and felt like we had landed in a magical place. It was the best night of sleep we had in three weeks of traveling (including the south pacific), silent except for the sounds of creek and the calls of morepork owls.
We didn't want to leave the candle-lit bath/spa overlooking a forested hill and creek below — they really know how to do romance!
What was amazing about the Lodge was that it was the nicest place we stayed during our travels, but it was also the least expensive! Such a good value and we really wished we had booked a whole week there.
This is one of those places that you don't really want to tell people about because you want it to remain your little secret. Charles and Tam went above and beyond to make our stay relaxing and they did a fantastic job restoring their piece of paradise. The property is incredible with plenty of hikes and river swimming holes. It is an easy drive to Cathedral Cove & Hot Water Beach but you definitely do not feel like a tourist. You should see my wife's expression when she talks about this place.

We spent 3 nights at Wairua Lodge, in the King Snug, at the end of our 5 week adventure in New Zealand. The Coromandel Peninsula took us by surprise. We expected a busy resort style area to be what we saw and instead we found the opposite was true. We love places that are on the 'road less traveled' and Wairua Lodge is a perfect answer to that. Firstly the directions we had from Tam were excellent and it is easy to find if you follow those. When we arrived we were enveloped by the tranquility and peacefulness of this place that strives to surround you with the natural beauty of these hills and its abundance of growth.
Our room was very comfortable and we had all we needed. We had our dinner each night on our own little patio, and then we could sit and relax listening to nature as the day drew to a close. One night we took a walk down by the river to search out the glow worms. A beautiful sight.
It wasn't quite warm enough for us to enjoy swimming in the river or jumping off the rope swing but we will save that for our next visit! There are amazing beaches not too far away and some really lovely quirky places to eat that are full of character, and characters!
A perfect way to end your day is to book your hour in the tree house bathtub. In the quiet of the evening you can hear the owls calling, other birds gently singing, and you can wind down luxuriating in this lovely big bath for two.
Charles and Tam both are eager to help with any information they can provide you with to enjoy this area. Also, if you are missing something when you prepare your evening meal...they might just have that bottle of sauce you are looking for!
This place invites you to stop, to listen, to really let your senses come alive and find in that tranquility, that your heart can listen to life in revitalized way.
If you are a contemplative at heart....this is indeed the place for you!

Room Tip: There is not a swimming pool but a beautiful river to plunge into - your own swimming hole right the...

We stayed for 4 nights in the King Snug room, which was spacious and very comfortable, overlooking the gardens. We had a private patio, complete with a bbq. Tam and Charles were perfect hosts, giving us plenty of freedom, yet providing help and information when required.
The bath house was a great experience, as close to nature as you could get, private, romantic, candle lit, looking out to a floodlit river valley, just so relaxing. The walks our hosts have designed are very interesting ranging from challenging to easy- and we tried them all.
We were visiting from Australia, and found the whole experience very enjoyable, and would recommend it as a highlight place to stay. We found the location most convenient for exploring the Coromandel Peninsula. Would we stay again? most definitely.

Room Tip: All the rooms were well positioned, choose one that suits your needs.
