Lovely hosts AJ and Merle made our stay in Whitianga a pleasant one. The room was very clean, generously sized, with an eating area and a comfortable couch and flat screen TV. Although there was no WiFi in the room, we were able to borrow AJ's computer. We would happily stay here again.

This b & b takes the cake when it comes to cleanliness and hospitality. It does, however, need to define the word breakfast. A highlight of many b & b's in the UK is the full English breakfast so often made with local produce. A b & b or small hotel in Europe may include ham, and cheese and bread from the local bakery. The breakfast at AJ's is more a snack when it strikes me as one of those places you expect would deliver the best from local suppliers. A small point I hear you say. Yes it is in the grand scheme of things and AJ's is not alone in New Zealand by calling this a breakfast so when you see the words ' bed and breakfast' do not assume fabulous sausages or black pudding or free range eggs or tasty bacon or fat halves of grilled tomato and crusty bread.
And now for the good bits. You feel you have known the owners for years immediately after saying hello. The unit we had is attached to the garage and, small gripe, the pictures on the website conjure up a different view. That aside, the room was a good size, spotless and the shower is built for a football team, well, the reserve bench anyway. The neighbourhood is quiet and though a good walk from town, it is not an imposition when it means you can take a turn along the beach as part of the walk.
In summary, put AJ's on your list of possible places to stay in Whitianga and if you want to meet a couple of great locals, stay in a place that is clean beyond definition and quiet then move it up near the top.

My boyfriend and I stayed at AJ’s for 3 days/2 nights in February. Our room was a great size with a queen bed, sitting area with flat screen TV/couch, a wetbar area w/ fridge and an ensuite with a wonderful shower. We peeked into the other room – located within a private area of the owner’s home – and although it didn’t have a sitting area, it was still a great size with the same amenities – queen bed, ensuite and wetbar area. It even had a private entrance so one can come and go as they please. Additionally, there was a fantastic deck available for our use - perfect place to have that afternoon glass of sav blanc!

AJ & Merle did not disappoint as hosts - they were friendly and welcoming – but not the type of hosts that interfered too much (which I can't stand at some B&Bs). They us not only maps of great drives and walks in the area but great recommendations for dinners and lunches in and around town - as well as a spade for the 'must do' morning at Hot Water Beach.

The room was clean and tidy with continental breakfast provided each morning – yogurt, cereal options, coffee/tea, juice, fresh fruit, etc. It was all provided in our own private fridge the evening before, so we didn’t have to set a time for breakfast each day – and could enjoy it on the deck in the morning sun. Merle even let me use her washer/dryer so I could do a much needed wash!

The B&B was located in a nice, quiet residential area of Whitianga, the actual town center was only an 8 minute walk (2 minute drive) away. AJ also lent us bikes to ride into town which proved great fun on more than one occasion.

To sum it up - AJ’s was clean, quiet, conveniently located and good value for money and you couldn’t ask for better hosts – they truly make it a home away from home. I would recommend this to my best friend in her 30’s as well as my parents in their 60’s.

PS - also make sure you go to The Lost Spring if you stay at AJ's....its a thermal pool/spa/restaurant - definitely worth it.
