We have just got back from our honeymoon staying 5 days in Apartment 34. The apartments are all new , spacious, trendy, and very well set up. Our top floor apartment got all of the afternoon sun, and we spent a lot of time sitting on the deck in the evenings having a few vino's and taking in the surroundings (there were some pretty cool launches parked outside our apartment!!). As it got cooler with the sun going down, it was off to the massive outdoor spa pool overlooking the canels. Its very relaxing sitting in the jacuzzi with a wine or two (in plastic cups -as you weren't allowed glass!!), with the only noise being the fish splashing around in the canels catching insects. An advantage with staying there now is that there are quite a few empty apartments which haven't sold (due to the recession), so we pretty much had the whole resort to ourselves....total bliss. We had a bbq on our deck, and the new kitchens had everything you needed to cook your own meals. The site manager was very nice and helpful, and we will definately be back. I would recommend to anyone who wants a luxury apartment at what I considered to be very cheap rates for what you get!

Sovereign Pier on the Waterways is a gated luxury apartment complex, which is situated on the canals of Whitianga in the Coromandel region of the North Island of New Zealand. The canals snake around the estuary and open up to Whitianga Beach, which is a wonderful white sand beach that is safe to swim at.

Sovereign Pier had been only open just over a year when we went to stay. We stayed for two nights in a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment. NZ$250.00 per night. There are about 30, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments in the complex all individually owned and some leased back to a management company.

We stayed in apartment #19. There is a secure covered garaging for one car, but plenty of other car parks within the complex. From the garage you walk through a little courtyard to the entrance which opens to the kitchen and on through the dinning area, lounge to a small grassed patio with views of the waterways.

The owners have decorated in a modern open plan style. with a large L shaped white leather couch in the living room, a dinning table and 6 brown leather chairs. The kitchen is well appointed with Westinghouse fridge/freezer, dishwasher, 4 burner stove top, wall oven, microwave and toaster. There are enough cutlery, glassware and plates etc for a dinner for six. With plenty of platters and bowls as well. In the kitchen there is lots of storage. The kitchen end of the apartment is quite dark which is not helped by the dark carpeting though out the apartment. We had to keep the lights on in the kitchen during the day even though it was sunny.

The 2nd bedroom and bathroom are at this end of the apartment. The bedroom looks out on the small courtyard garden, which is enclosed by the car garage, so does not get a lot of natural light, but given that it would be mostly used for sleeping it is not a real issue. The bathroom which is across the hall has a bath/shower all nice and new, white and chrome. Also in the hallway a clothes washer and dryer are behind cupboard doors.

The main bedroom has an ensuite bathroom and large walk-in closet, a queen size bed, a couple of side cabinets and a set of drawers. Floor to ceiling siding doors open to the small patio and view. The bathroom has a small shower box, but was wonderful water pressure. The bathroom sink is strange that it is so high off the ground.

In the lounge there is a gas fire which we could not work out how to use, a flat screen TV which has 6 sky channels. It is enjoyable to sit and take in the view of some rather large motor launch's

Overall the apartment is very comfortable and modern. Nice black rattan sofa and chairs with padded white cushions out side to take advantage of the views and sun. A perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine as the sun sets.

The complex Managers were friendly and helpful but it wasn’t until we checked out that I noticed a sign saying they had canoes to hire around the canals. Something that would have been a fun to do. The Pool area, has a large lap style pool and a huge spa pool that could easily fit a rugby team, but the spa was not working when we where there. The complex also has a gym with 4 different machines. Our Apartment was right in front of the pool area, the complex only had one other apartment in use when we were there. I'm sure there would be noise and loss of privacy if the complex was busy.

The complex is an easy 12 minute walk to the township and ocean beach or 5min drive.

We would stay again and the costing with 4 people would be NZ$62.50 per person a night, what a deal !!!!!!!!!
