The lodge is tucked away in a lovely setting overlooking the land and sea. The views are particularly beautiful from the 2 Bedroom Suite and the sunny main deck is fantastic for evening drinks and breakfast. It is very quiet and peaceful and within a walking distance to the beach, the walk to Cooks Beach is shorter than the walk to Lonely Bay Beach and perhaps a little easier for older guests. 970 Lonely Bay is approximately 30 minutes drive from Whitianga, where the main restaurants are; however the lodge offers dinner with a 24 hours notice and the wonderful host will take you to the ferry landing where you can catch a 3 minute ferry transfer. The service is continuous and it is quite fun to catch the old ferry to dinner, the boat has great character and we didn’t think our travel to the restaurant was a problem at all. The lodge is beautifully appointed, elegant, new and clean; all spaces are very bright with lots of sunshine coming through all day. Loring, the host, is delightful: very helpful, knowledgeable of the area and full of great stories! As the lodge is a very intimate, boutique property, I think it would be at its best when taken for exclusive use to guarantee privacy.

Room Tip: If you can afford it the Two Bedroom Suite is the best!

A stunning lodge, set in a stunning location. Perhaps the only things that topped these were the wonderful hospitality and the incredible breakfasts. Loring was a great host who knew just how to mix attention and advice with privacy and peace. Glasses of wine, a homemade lemon and gin birthday cake (need to get that recipe -- it was amazing) and fires on the terrace appeared as if by magic; as did tuis by the breakfast table, and moreporks, fireworks and stars at night.

Lots to do in the area -- a wonderful if stormy sea kayak trip, lunch at the local Mercury Bay vineyard, walks to Lonely Bay and Cathedral Cove, blissful swims at Cooks and Hahei Beach and an evening steam in the natural springs at Hot Water Beach. We caught the passenger ferry to Whitianga for a great supper at the Mill Road Bistro, although Loring's barbecue dinner on the terrace was unforgettable as well.

And also time to lounge in the beautiful lodge itself, on our private terrace, and in the bath looking out over the view.

This was a treat to celebrate a big birthday -- a gorgeous experience to remember (and great tips from Loring on what to in San Fran on the way home).

We came to NZ to participate in the celebrations of the Rugby World Cup and decided to have a little romance and respite on the wonderful Coromandel. What a fabulous surprise 970 Lonely Bay was. Loring greeted us with her personal touch of superb care and attention whilst our privacy was respected at all times. The beauty of the natural environment and the detailed simplicity of the fittings and finishings meant we felt at home but what a luxurious and comfortable home it was. Trudi and Loring made sure that the delicious meals and morsels both satisifed and inspired us and we felt truely lucky to have the opportunity to experience this wonderful and inviting place. Thank you Loring and Trudi!

Hello Loring, Jane and Trudi. We have been thinking of you a lot over the last few days while making our way around Catalunya in Spain on our brand new adventure. We have told many people of how wonderful a time we have had with you. So it is about time that we write this review so that others can have the same great experience that we have had.

We got married in January 2011 and had the priviledge of having 970 Lonely Bay Lodge as our reception venue as well as family acommodation for the weekend. We first made contact in June 2010 and from then till the very end our experience with them had been nothing short of amazing. The lodge manager Loring did everything humanly possible to make sure that we had a great time. Throughout the months we would receive emails to see if how our wedding preparation were going and whether we needed anything. They weren't even wedding planners and they cared so much! It's unbelievable!

Another example would be that Loring personally picked up our wedding flowers from Auckland the day before our wedding just because she happened to be there so she “may as well do it”. Also, we would like to point out that all the staff at the Lodge were great cooks as well.

The Lodge was elegant and very beautiful. Have a look at the photos here on tripadvisor and on their website, it was truly that gorgeous. It was located just 5 minutes walk from cooks beach, 15 minutes to Lonely Bay and 15 minutes from the pier across to Whitianga. Google cooks beach or look it up on Panoramio and you will see the beauty of the area. You can pretty much roll out of bed in the morning and be in the waves of cooks beach, then come back for the best breakfast you will find in New Zealand with croissants, museli, eggs however you like it, pain au chocolate, yoghurt, honey, cheeses, all sorts of bread, homemade jams, bacon... whatever you want.

You will be well looked after, but not only in a way that a great business looks after its customers or the way that professionals look after their clients. It will also be in a way that longtime friends take care of each other. Every question will be met with enthusiasm. Your best experience possible is their commitment. We loved how passionate they are, and through this passion is where everything came from. We really got that from them. They cared more, gave more and had a great time doing it, because that's what they were about. They believed in what the best kiwi hospitality should be, and they delivered. We will definitely be back.

Thanks!

Gary and Sarah

Lonley Bay was one of the 3 best locations we had in New Zealand during a 4 week holiday! It is a beautiful house, very beautiful designed and we were so happy to meet those wonderful people who took care of us in the house. She is a very good cook!!! It is very good to go for long walks and the white sand beach is just around the corner.

Had a superb long weekend away from Wellington with our 7 week old baby over the Queen's birthday weekend. Loring, the manager, was absolutely fantastic and was an amazing cook one minute, a fantastic baby-sitter the next and able to gve fantastic advice on local things to see and do. The property is stunning with fantastic proximity to the estuary, Cooks' Beach and Lonely Bay beach and the breakfasts and meals were first class. We had a mixture of weather while we were there and the property is ideal for cold winter days cuddling by the roaring log fires and can equally turn into a perfect beach house when the sun comes back. Would strongly recommend this place for couples, families, weddings or just a nice weekend away. It is a very warm, airy and well-lit property and we can't wait to come back soon...and maybe use the outdoor bath!
