I chose to stay in a motel unit here as it seemed very reasonably priced and it turned out to be good value for money. Being off-season the camp was pretty much deserted but the motel unit was near the office and even though on my own, I felt totally comfortable. The room was a one-bedroomed unit and although quite basic, it was modern and spacious, had a well equipped kitchen, and a lovely comfortable bed - one of the best beds I've had in a motel I think! I did get the impression that the unit may not have been rented out for a while as the surfaces could have done with a bit of a wipe but otherwise it was nice and clean. The camp is located in the opposite direction to the main beach area but everything is in walking distance, only a couple of minutes to the shops and a couple of minutes beyond that to Buffalo Beach. There are some interesting shops to browse and some lovely places to eat. Of course the camp will be a totally different place in summer but I enjoyed my stay and can recommend off-season for absolute relaxed peace and quiet.

We stayed here for our first camping trip in NZ for 5 nights in the last week in April. The management are welcoming and suggested a couple of sites for us that were a little more sheltered due to the wind that they'd had the night before and the fact we were with children - which was thoughtful.
The site was quiet due to the time of year, but the sites are large - plenty of room for our very large tent, the car parked at the side, and a picnic table too.
The park itself is in a good spot - a comfortable 10-15 wander in to the middle of town and all its amenities - even with a 6 ad 3 year old in tow. In fact it's a good route to give you the excuse to pop into Café Nina which has some of the best coffee I've had in a while, which in NZ is saying something!
Have I stayed on sites with more kitchen utensils? Yes. Have I stayed in places with bigger playgrounds and more facilities? Yes. But for generally more money. We didn't want for anything, we knew utensils were limited, so brought some of our own, no problem.
Conclusion - I'll definitely visit Whitianga again, and I've no doubt we'll stay at Mercury Bay Holiday Park again too.

The campsite is good quality but having to pay for showers. Come on!
Everything was neat and tidy, as per previous comments, the kitchens were a little lacking in utensils but we had our own so no problem.
Would stay here again if we were in the area.
Has a pool (heated)

Hi there and thanks for your review and coming to stay with us. Our communal kitchen is well equipped with fridge/freezers, microwaves, toasters, kettles and a box of pans and utensils for those who travel light. We do charge $1 for 7 minutes of hot water for our showers, this enables us to keep our tariff reasonably priced for a 4 star facility, ensures everyone gets a hot shower when they need one and contributes to our responsible environmental efforts. We look forward to seeing the family again soon.

My friend and i have been driving through the country in a campervan and this is the first holiday park we stayed at. Reception was very welcoming and we could pick any camp site we wanted. Kitchen was basic (no cooking utensil) but we just used yhe ones in our car. Bathroom was clean but shower costed $1 for 7 min. There was wifi but had to pay and seemed like all the other holiday parks as well. Overall it was good value for what you pay for.

Had 3 days here while at a wedding. Facilities spotless and grounds were fine with good shade and good sized sites. Owners/managers were very friendly and helpful. Would stay there again if in the area.
