After doing the Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove hike, we decided to take Ocean Leopard Tours for a chance to do some good snorkeling. The boat was comfortable and our guide Justin was very friendly and knowledgable about the attractions in the harbor and all the way down the coast. We got to see everything we expected and then some.
The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is the snorkeling part. The so-called "designated snorkeling area" had quite cloudy water whereas there were many other areas that you could clearly see all the way to the bottom. When we first arrived, he tossed food to the red snappers and they surfaced to take it, but when we went into the water we saw very few fish at all. Saw one sting ray which was the highlight of the snorkeling part of the trip. The other minus was the very poorly designed ladder for climbing out of the water. The rungs were rounded and not wide so with bare feet it was very painful to climb, as there was no comfortable way to put your foot so it wasn't painful.
I am sure none of this was Justin's fault and he was a very good guide.
I would still recommend this for the amazing sights and sea caves that you get to see, but if snorkeling is what you're after, find a different tour.

Our family enjoyed an outstanding morning tour of the coast line and islands. Justin provides an exceptional commentary about the natural and people history of the region. We learned about the marine life and fish, coastal geography and geology, the original Maori and European visitors and the contemporary villages. Extraordinary features of the tour included riding the Ocean Leopard into a huge cave, swimming at Cathedral Cove (we swam into a cave and walked on a sand beach in the back) and cruising along the coast of a large island. This is the best possible boat trip!
