“Too many people in one dorm room”
Reviewed 1 July 2013

Shared accommodation. Only booked because we needed somewhere relatively cheap to stay. 10 ppl in one dorm is too many. The room was small with little space to keep your things so when we arrived other people's things were everywhere including on our beds. Owner simply pointed at our beds without any attempt to clear them.

Ok for the price, but I wouldn't stay there again. Literally used it as a place to crash and that's it. Decent communal areas. Kept clean. TV. Wifi if you pay for it. Found it was like this throughout NZ.

Stayed May 2013, travelled with friends

We got trapped in a rainstorm for a few days so we ended up here...and I'm glad we did! The owners were really nice and we had a cozy double room for ourselves. The facilities were good, and there were plenty of movies (although they were VHS) and a nice lounge area to sit and relax.

I just stayed here one night, but it´s a lovely hostel, clearly runned by people who love doing it. It hase a nice atmosphere and easy to make contact to other travelers, because there are big communal areas. The cat doesn´t wear pyjamas but is a really friendly host :)

I stayed in a female dorm for one night. There were clean linens. The bunk mattress was very soft and the metal bunks quite noisy. Otherwise, no problems with the dorm. The bathroom was clean, and the kitchen was reasonably well equipped. There was a nice communal lounge with a TV and a good selection of videos. People gathered sociably to watch these in the evening. Staff were pleasant throughout. This was a quiet, overall comfy hostel - although the mattress I was on could definitely do with an overhaul.
The ferry is just a short walk away, as were the shops and cafes of the town.

Very central and the manager was really helpful, but the other guests ruined our stay.

Whilst the guests aren't the fault of the owner, more could be done to keep things in order. A couple were shouting at each other in the room next to ours until midnight, we repeatedly asked them to keep it down. People were still noisily chatting in the corridors until 1pm. Vomit was all over the bathroom at 7am. The kitchen was left in a mess from late evening until early the next morning. The people running this place need to stick their faces into the hostel a bit more often, whilst it's nice they let the guests keep to themselves - a lot of the guests don;t respect that freedom.

This place reminded me of when I was younger going to see my grandparents. It has a very rustic feel to it. The owners were very nice and always willing to help you out with anything. Close to the beach and close to everything down town. My only issues were the pressure of the water when taking a shower and the kitchen was relatively small. Everybody I meet here were very excited to be on the road so the people made the stay that much more relaxing.
