Delicious food. Huge portions which they offer to pack for you to take home. We did and it fed us for a second night. Lovely staff.

“What an amazing find!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2014

Wow! We agree that you can't judge a book by its cover. We had eaten 3 times in a row at the very posh restaurant around the corner and decided to change it up and went into this small and very modest looking place. The decor is extremely clean with white walls and pictures of Greek Islands, with plain wooden tables and chairs, nicely set with white and blue cloths and napkins. The service was so friendly and unlike some places we were not left standing being ignored. We were greeted by the loveliest smiling waitress who seated us as if we were old friends and asked us just to relax and take our time. The menu is a mixture of Greek and Italian traditional dishes such as Moussaka, Lasagne, Greek Salad, pizzas, Souvlaki (grilled skewers and a whole choice of small and large starters. We started with a Greek Meze plate to share between the two of us. It had a huge selection of things for all tastes; Olives, Gherkins, Smoked Salmon on crackers, Stuffed vine leaves (Dolmades) with tasty rice and herb filling, Falafel and dips. My partner had pan fried Veal with Marsala wine, which was a wonderful buttery experience of thin sliced meat shallowed fried so it was just caramelised on the edges, but tender and sweet in the middle with a sticky coating (not swimming in it though) of sweet Marsala wine reduction. All this came with crispy roasted herby potatoes and a green salad, just enough to fill but not be overfaced. I had a hearty bowl of creamy fettucine with home made Carbonara sauce with the optional garlic added. A wonderful grown up treat if you are hungry but you could have a smaller portion of any of the pasta dishes and there are less rich sauces should you want to save room for dessert. We were given plenty of warning that as it was Valentine's Day, there was a complimentary dessert of the most wonderful Tiramisu topped with strawberries and a pink icing heart decoration on the plates, charming, generous and delicious!

Overall the meal was very freshly cooked and you got the impression that everything is prepared with love and the want to please you and served with discreet but very friendly staff. The prices were the lowest we had experienced in the Coromandel and this huge 3 course menu, plus a bottle of sparkling wine, came to a modest $80, unbelievable value for the quality of food and the quantity. So pleased with this, we cancelled our final night's meal out at the posh place and we went to Al Camino again, both having the Veal Marsala this time as it was so good, but having less wine and trying the Garlic Prawns baked in tomato sauce and Garlic Pizza Bread (a heavenly treat of thin crispy dough with a light smearing of garlic butter) for a modestly priced indulgent starter. Still had desserts and the cost was still only $68, incredible! We will be back to this place and for two thoroughly picky eaters, we would thoroughly recommend trying Al Camino at least once when in Whitianga.

“Taste of Greece”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2014

We first discovered this place as it was the only place we could count on to feed us on a Friday night when we arrive down from Auckland. By 8:30pm all the other kitchens are closed. We love it because the staff and owners are so friendly and obliging and the meals make you feel like you are in a little Greek Taverna, they are authentic and delicious. They are very reasonably priced and consistently good. We wouldn't bother going anywhere else now.

“Excellent Food and Open Late”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2014

I'll be honest, the ONLY reason we came here is because we arrived late into town and someone recommended that it would be the only place open for dinner. When we arrived we weren't too sure about the look of the place. Very plain, looked more like a take away / 4th meal place. We decided to eat in their sit down portion of the restaurant and were very pleasantly surprised, do not judge a book by its cover. We ordered the souvlakia and the chicken was insanely tender. Huge meal and delicious. Greek salad was great as well. Friend of ours had the lamb cannelloni and he said it was perfect. Service was VERY friendly.
