We stayed at Oceans Resort for 2-nights in mid-March during a tour of New Zealand. We had booked a 1-bedroom apartment on the internet a number of months in advance of our visit. Based on previous TA reviews I emailed in advance to ensure that the apartment was within the WiFi range.
On arrival we were met by Steve who showed us to our apartment. We had been allocated a 2-bed apartment (number 59) as this had better WiFi reception although we only used the upstairs bedroom and bathroom. The internet was free which is a bonus in New Zealand as there is often a charge and the speed was quite good with only a few delays in accessing the network at busy times. Each apartment has its own parking bay/drive so unpacking luggage is very easy. The apartment was spacious and well equipped with a kitchen with all the implements you could possibly need to effectively self-cater along with a dish-washer (tea, coffee and condiments as well). A variety of breakfasts can be ordered by 7pm the day before if required although we preferred to make our own, stocking up from a local supermarket a few minutes drive away (about 20-minutes walk). There was a washing machine and complimentary washing powder which was replaced each day along with a separate tumble dryer downstairs. The bedroom had a comfortable bed with electric blanket although luckily it was nice and warm during our stay so we did not have to use it!
The bathroom has a good shower over the bath with seemingly endless supply of hot water, explained by the massive hot water tank in the cupboard. A slight negative was the small bathroom sink which was difficult for shaving and there was limited space for storage of toiletries.
The living space was massive with a high ceiling and 2-comfortable sofas and opened onto a lovely balcony with table, chairs and a gas BBQ. The resort is situated just back from the seafront and you can hear the waves at night and there was even a sea view if you stood on tiptoes in the kitchen!! There is a heated swimming pool which we did not use but it looked really nice and Steve can provide beach towels and spades that can be hired for just $5 for use on Hot Water Beach. Steve was really helpful with advice on where to go and can advise on the time of low tide. It is best to visit the beach 2-hours before low tide to give the maximum amount of time in self-dug pools.
We ate in on our first evening as it was Sunday and a number of the restaurants were either closed or closed very early. On Monday we ate at ‘Squids’ - a seafood restaurant in Blacksmiths Street which is excellent - good food and good prices. The oysters and clam chowder were the best we have had.
