“Thayer wedding”
Reviewed 11 November 2013

We had our wedding at the Thayer in October. The setting was gorgeous with the river and the fall foliage. The staff was very accommodating and we had a wonderful weekend. Lexi organized our event which included reserving hotel rooms, choosing a menu and planning a breakfast for the morning after the wedding. Everything was wonderful, delicious, clean and the staff was very diligent. Our room was magnificent, we are very happy with the Thayer!

Room Tip: All the rooms are ice but the suites are definitely worth the money.

I have stayed at this hotel on the grounds of West Point annually over 15 years for an annual scottish country dance ball. The service was always friendly, but during renovations and before the hotel came under new management, it had a sort of run down air to it. This time we got a room with a river view and were appropriately advised that it was above the outside bar and that trains passed by during the night, so it might be a little noisy. The bar closed at 2 and the train added to the nostalgic feel of the place. The hotel added a little cafe to the lobby area, which was a nice touch.

The room was well-appointed, the bed was comfortable, there was wi-fi in the room and there were enough outlets for electronic gadgets. There was a personal Keurig machine in the bathroom. The dinner buffet meal was copious and had nice touches, but it was not gourmet (I do not know if that was due to the banquet manager or to the organizers.) The brunch was basic and okay. The service remains friendly and helpful, including the porters. Entering the grounds of West Point was not difficult when we said we were going to the hotel. All in all the hotel is being well-maintained in a reasonable modern fashion while maintaining its traditional appeal.

From all of us at The Historic Thayer Hotel at West Point, we extend our gratitude for your annual revisit to our establishment. In recent years, the hotel has seen multi-million dollar renovations to bring this historical property to modern times. Upgrades include Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, new Executive Suites, and state-of-the-art audio-visual technology in meeting spaces. One of the most unique additions to the property is our Room Dedication Program. This program honors distinguished West Point graduates such as Brigadier General (Retired) Pete Dawkins and Colonel (Retired) Buzz Aldrin. A great item featured in all our guest rooms is a wonderful book, “West Point Leadership: Profiles of Courage” by Dan Rice, which highlights various iconic West Point graduates. Stay in one of our dedicated rooms, and read an in-depth overview of the honoree in Dan Rice’s book. This unique experience can’t be duplicated at any other property. We would be delighted to have you stay with us again in your next visit to the Hudson Valley.

The Thayer is ob the banks Hugh above the Hudson River at West Point. The views are incredibly beautiful. The hotel has such potential but lacks greatly in service. The hotel seemed void of staff, and the food was very mediocre. They need to attend their own leadership program.

We appreciate you staying with us during your visit to the Hudson Valley, and for your feedback on our services and staff. The incredible views of the Hudson River can be seen from all ten of our meeting spaces and our three dining outlets. The best view is undoubtedly from Zulu Time Rooftop Bar and Lounge located on The Historic Thayer Hotel. While on Zulu Time, you can enjoy breathtaking views and a unique ambience. This outlet serves as a great space for social gatherings and corporate meetings alike. For staffing, our employees are mandated to enroll in our Excellence Training Program, and required to renew every six months. This helps reinforce our vision, mission, and values. In addition, we incorporate feedback from guests to the program and discuss how to improve for next time. It will be a great pleasure to have you stay with us once more to show you our improvements.

We selected The Thayer because we wanted to be in the midst of all of the wedding activity and fun and be able to relax between events. The service was fabulous and everyone was welcoming. When I made the reservation and again when I checked in, the staff made sure to let me know that the river view rooms were overlooking the Zulu Bar and also that trains run through the night and can be loud. All of this was true--but we didn't mind. You simply need to be aware of it. The food here was spectacular--from the bartenders to the servers--everyone was wonderful and managed multiple events with what appeared to be ease. The room was clean and well appointed. Only complaint was the a problem with the shower, which I addressed at check-out. The views are spectacular.

Room Tip: Be aware of the Zulu bar and the noise from the train if you stay on the river side of the hotel. Th...

We enjoyed our stay at the Thayer very much. It is a wonderful, well restored old building. They are able to manage several large events with ease. The food was superb. Our room was delightful and quiet, with stunning views of the autumn foliage. The beds were extremely comfortable. Once in our room, we were unaware of of any noise, either in the corridor or next door.

Room Tip: Top floors are best for view.

Our Food and Beverage Department, as well as Banquet Department, are extremely hard working and dedicated individuals. Through careful planning and detailing, our team is able to execute several functions at once while providing five star services. Our kitchen is led by Executive Chef, Brian Aspell, CEC, who recently revamped our entire MacArthur’s Riverview Restaurant menu which gives diners new and exciting options. Fall is the perfect time to visit our historic hotel because Fall Foliage in the Hudson Valley is amongst the best in the county. Mixing beauty with history, you are sure to have a memorable stay at The Historic Thayer Hotel at West Point. Next time you are in the area make sure to visit us again.

No doubt, the building, scenic views and history cant be beat! We were given a choice at arrival, view of Hudson that come with train noise, or a view of the mountains. Train wouldnt bother me, but hubby would hear it, so went with the mountain view --- HAH! we had an ugly view of a lower level roof and yeah mountains - but the ugly roof took away from the mountains. The staff, however was very pleasant, helpful upon arrival at the door. While I like the idea of saving energy, I could do without a lesson as to how to work the lights - a bit too much (minor pet peeve). Our room was clean and had a greater toiletry supplies readily available if needed than other hotels. Was disappointed, especially given the location, some staff spoke broken English, I just feel this is not the appropriate environment. Breakfast, buffet style, was hot, coffee very good which flowed freely with OJ via wait staff. The hostess that seated, could use a lesson or two in greeting guests and providing some verbal direction as to what to expect. When we were seated, she walked away & we just sat there....and waited; not sure if we should just go direct to the buffet or wait for the wait staff to advise us ..... we finally just went and helped ourselves only to find out at time of payment, there were 2 plate sizes. We selected from the first plates we saw, went to the buffet once. When we received the check, we then learned from our waitress that she was only going to charge us for 1 breakfast since we only had the small plates and the hostess who sat us wouldn't allow it. Not pleasant finding this out after the fact. The potatoes served with breakfast were horrible and would gladly prefer McDonalds fries in place. We attended a wedding at the hotel, and loved we had access to the garden :) Staff very pleasant ~ food was very good and served hot and a hefty serving at that :) We also visited the Zulu lounge and loved the views and comfort. While other reviews complained of loud music, I enjoy having a variety at the hotel and believe their reviews are based on age and preference of music. For those guests that are easily affected by this atmosphere, they could easily be placed in other rooms away from the "party" places. Simply interview the guests at arrival if their room is near the club and simply re-assign their room.

The one MAJOR problem I had was the wireless internet. I find it totally absurd for the hotel to not only charge for this service - given their nightly rates - but to charge for EACH device - is just completely Motel 8. I also was not sure why the Hotel charges $50 extra per night for "incidentals" if they are used ..... not sure what the "incidentals" were intended to be -- there is no stocked fridge/snacks provided in the room; there is coffee -- I would think it is complimentary .. but who knows.
Overall one great destination for a wedding and your guests could easily plan a mini-vacation with lots to do as part of the celebration. The architecture, history, several seating areas, grounds, building,, views, staff politeness make this a beautiful destination.

Room Tip: If you are sensitive to club music at night, ask for a room away from the club, keep away from views...

There is a certain "Old World" charm to the Thayer Hotel. Located immediately inside the main gate of West Point, The United States Military Academy, the Thayer represents excellence in every respect.

Upon arriving at the hotel we were greeted with a friendly smile by a doorman/bellman . He directed us to the front desk for check in, offered help with our bags, and told us about the complimentary valet parking service. All the while he chatted with us appropriately , asked about our journey, and appeared to be genuinely interested.

We received the same friendly service as we checked into our room. Watching the staff interact it seemed as though Thayer employees enjoy their job and working with each other. That combination leads to great service for the traveler.

The lobby area is reasonably large, majestic in its own way, and yet comfortable. The decor leaves no doubt that you are visiting an institution steeped in military tradition and history.

That theme is found throughout the Thayer. The halls are decorated with portraits and memorabilia of outstanding Academy Grads from the West Point's earliest days to modern times. Our room was dedicated to McInerney Family. Several generations of the family graduated from West Point, and served their country, rising to significant command positions. It was fun and interesting to see their pictures, and to read about their leadership experiences.

The room itself was nicely furnished and comfortable. It was spotless and the bathroom facilities have clearly received a recent upgrade. We chose a room with a river view. With the fall colors the scenery was beautiful; but trains run frequently along the river. If your room has a river view you will hear the trains going by. In some ways that is nostalgic, but..

Special kudos must be given to the staff at the McArthur Dining Room. We provided them with a challenge to which they rose without hesitation. We started as a party of two. We were seated, placed our order, and then four close family friends arrived in the dining room; now were were a party of six. The wait staff smiled and graciously moved us all to a bigger table. Then, two more members of our group showed up; it was time for a table for eight. Was that a problem? Absolutely not. The experience must have been frustrating to our servers but that frustration was never demonstrated. They were professionals!

The menu was a little on the pricy side but the food was worth what we paid. Excellent choices, beautiful presentation, and very tasty!

Would I go back to the Thayer? You bet. This was hospitality at its best!

Room Tip: If you think the trains will keep you awake ask for a room not on the river side.

We appreciate your kind words about our hotel and staff, and are delighted to hear of your great experience with us. The Historic Thayer Hotel at West Point was built in 1926 and is considered a national landmark. Through the years, the hotel has seen multi-million dollar renovations, new ownership and management that are West Point graduates, and recently unveiled new menus by our Executive Chef who is a Culinary Institute of America graduate. One of the most unique upgrades is the addition of our Room Dedication Program. This program highlights West Point graduates, like Colonel (Retired) Buzz Aldrin and Brigadier General (Retired) Pete Dawkins, and gives an up close and personal look at their military and personal accomplishments. With memorabilia on the wall, guests get the opportunity to stay in a museum. Not only are the rooms dedicated, but in the hallways you will find plaques with important facts of our Nation. In Superintendent's Row, the Cadet Honor Code can be found on the wall. This code must be memorized by all cadets, and cadets risk being removed from the Academy if they break the code. Our unique property has so much to offer, and you need more than one trip to capture all it has to offer. We hope to see you walking our halls again soon.
