The trail to the lookout is about 2.5 miles, although there is an option to take a fork near to the top out to another trail for a further 6 miles-time prevented us doing the extended longer trail.
The trail is easy to moderate on grade although we are fairly hiking fit after a couple of weeks on long difficult trails in Yellowstone and the Tetons.
Nearing the top are the ruins of an old hotel, and the lookout is about 10 minutes further on from here.
At the top is a fire observation tower and there are great views from here. There is also a lookout point about 100 meters past the ranger hut and basic rest room.
If you push it out on the clim it should take about an hour and a half, and the return took about 50 minutes.
The nearby town of Woodstock has excellent restaurants, coffee shops and other artist shops and itself it worth a visit

moderate walk to the top of overlook mountain- quite hard going at times, about 2 hours to ascend. Towards the top is an empty hotel that makes for some amazing photography in the right light. The views from the fire tower at the top were spectacular- would be a great place to go in the fall

The hike was a long continuous uphill stint. Surrounded by nature and hidden under the canopy of lush leaves. It took about an hour when we neared the top. There is a beautiful ruins of a hotel there at the top. Walking around inside reminded me of a scene from Ever After where the lovers meet in the ruins. I felt just like Drew Barrymore who played Cinderella. One more short walk and we reached the ranger's cabin and the firetower. I made it about halfway up the tower before getting too scared (or maybe lazy). We sat down at the picnic table and had some tasty snacks. I highly reccomend some kind of reward once you reach the top. We walked behind the ranger's cabin to the beautiful overlook peak. You could see for miles and miles, all kinds of mountains and birds flying. It was truly a beautiful hike.

The Catskills is one of the best riding in the Northeast. If you haven't had the chance to ride, I highly recommend.

The walk up to the top of overlook is a wondeful hike through lovely woodland, using a wide trail with plenty of great spots to stop and check out. Before the top are the ruins of the once famous Overlook Mountain House where many 19th and early 20th century travelers took their vacations.

Views from the top are even accentuated by climbing to the top of the renovated firetower where truly awesome sights are to behold. An exciting and rewarding few hours at one of the Catskills most iconic spots.
